Apparently, Pitch Black was supposed to be a one-off. When Riddick became popular, the writers had to create a universe and story for Riddick.
Which is awesome. I remember when the movie came out and it was a different take on aliens and the heros. I'm glad they made the third one because the second wasn't up to par.
Yeah it was. I remember working at Blockbuster when Pitch Black came out on home video and we couldn’t keep it in stock. It was this unknown movie and I was just shocked at how customers responded to it. This was one of the rare instances where I watched something purely on how popular the rental was.
It was the definition of a sleeper hit.

If Steven Spielberg didn't notice him in Multi-Facial, he wouldn't be in Saving Private Ryan. If David Twohy didin't recognize him in Saving Private Ryan, we wouldn't have Pitch Black and Riddick we know would have never been born. So thank you Steven for starting the chain of events.

Not many movies I can say this about, but all three of these movies I can watch over and over and over. What I love about them is that even thought its the future, they don't make the fact that its the future feel like the leading star. Riddick is a great character who never ceases to surprise you, keep you on the edge of your seat, and keep you entertained for the entire movie. Can't wait for the fourth!

Wait, what happened to getting thrown in a slam where they say you'll never see the light again, finding a doctor, and for 20 menthol kools getting him to do a surgical shine-job on your eyes? That part of Riddick's story I always found important and insightful regarding his character, and illustrates his will to survive better than the struggle the movies show us because it is formative and foundational lore. He's already Billy Badass by the movies.
I always figured he told a cool story to a kid to give them a sense of wonder. He probably never thought she would go looking for a doctor to perform the "surgery." I always just figured he was actually born with them so I didn't even know it was a retcon.
In the game escape from butcher Bay, it shows how Riddick got his eye shine, unless the game isn't canon but it does explain there
@Nick K it could have been that. Though, when Kiera and Riddick are reunited on Crematoria, she states that she couldn't find a doctor, even for 20 menthol kools, so it seems like a retcon to me. Honestly I shouldn't be this invested in it

@Tyrell Thiel She believed the lie he told when she was a kid. That just seemed like the natural progression of things to me. Add on the big cats at the prison that have naturally occurring shine to their eyes and it had me thinking those cats must be from Furya.
I’d love for a Riddick vs Alien vs Predator movie or comic someday. Plus the Riddick universe is an underrated sci fi series.
Oddly enough it's the one sci-fi franchise that you can't find a lot of lore on, there are no dedicated UA-cam channels as far as I know for instance. I would know I've looked at some point but that was probably a year or two ago.
I could see the Predators accepting Riddick to help with a xenomorph hunt.

Chronicles of Riddick is still my favorite of the three so far. Such a a perfect mix of sci Fi and high fantasy and badass action. Man I love that movie. Time to rewatch it again!
The way it ends is great too. Him sitting on the throne, just exhausted. Wasn't even thinking of the repercussions of killing the leader of the necromongers, he just had to kill him. Then they all kneel down to him and the shot pans out.

Why doesn't ANYONE count Dark Fury as part of the movies cause it was. That's where you meet Tombs and it carried over to Chronicles of Riddick.

The entire series has that feel of grunge and fantasy that reminds me of the fifth element. It alludes to having more history than it shows and that's what makes people soo excited to see more
The idea of the eyes shine I envisioned was that Furia is a dark planet either by setting or to coincide with Riddicks abilities it’s heavily forested to the point of blocking out most natural light, or the Furians live mostly underground. I also had the idea that Furians have a nicotatating membrane that is used when exposed to normal light situations but it’s a skill taught to the younger Furians at a certain age and Riddick being a infant when the genocide of his people happened he was never taught how to utilize it. Where as on his home world there were only a few places that were bright enough to need it.

The thing is. The character of Riddick in the first film was more raw. By the time the next 2 films came out it was strange. I think it's the universe he lives in. It isn't flushed out enough to really give Riddick a voice. And I think the idea of him having surgery for his eyes is cooler than him being born like that.
In CoR, the Fire Beast in the prison there is a nod to the surgery. It has the same eyes as him. Kind of, "if he got the surgery, it would be a transplant from this animal" kind of thing.
I always liked the idea that when mankind went to space they branched off into separate species from having to evolve on different planets. They need to flesh out the universe a little more. More planets and different offshoots of humanity
I forget where I read it, but the surgery (supposedly) is akin to cataract removal, where they slice the top layer of the outer cornea and inject a highly reflective substance behind his pupils. I could be wrong, it's been a long time since I've done any kind of research on riddick

Fun fact: all humans have the ability to see in inferred however there’s a “film” in the eyes that prevents it. His surgery was likely just the removal of said film.
It was retconned that Alpha Furians had those eyes.

6:26 CORRECTION ! Riddick always had that ability it was not surgically added. Though he believes that the shaman gave it to him through surgical modification it was not the case. He always had them but a some form of telepathic connection with the female furian who also gave him the mark of furia is the same thing that activated the furian eye trait. The shaman simply had a form of telepathic connection that allowed the early connection. It’s complicated but no the eyes aren’t a surgical modification despite what riddick thinks.

The Riddick Saga is by far one of Vin Diesel's must underrated series.
If you played the game 'Escape from Butcher Bay' the answer is provided there for Riddicks eye shine. This is Canon as Vin Diesel was heavily involved in the project. Riddick manages to get thrown into 'The Pit' where cannibalistic inmates struggle to survive. Also down there was a doctor. The doc performs the operation for favours. This augmentation later allows Riddick to make his escape through the mines which are pitch black (pardon the pun). There you go

Riddick has his eyeshine because he is an Alpha Furyan and that is also why he is so strong. This is all canon. The films retconned the game.

I must disagree because the game is Canon. Riddick had the operation performed in the prison Buthers Bay. Vin Diesel & many others involved in Pitch Black were involved in the games design. Vin Diesel even did all the voice overs for the Riddick avatar. If you are a Riddick fan suggest you play it. But you would need an older console.

While all Furyans possess peak human physiology, the Alphas are known to be damn near, if not outright, superhuman. Not all Furyans possess this genetic trait. The game is canon but the films retconned the games as Jack points out nothing he told her about the prison was true when it came to the eyeshine. In the game we never see Riddick get his eyeshine surgery as he described it. This video even mentioned it. All the surgeon did was stitch up his wound. Riddick who knew NOTHING of his Furyan heritage simply attributed it to the surgeon as an explanation. He was wrong. Vaako even tells Riddick he fought a Furyan during the genocide that possessed the same eyes as him, further proving it is a natural trait. Also I own the games and the movies since I was a teenager.
Another fun fact for ya, Riddick actually is a unlockable, playable character in the game Fallout: Tactics. He's a random encounter that, if he survives, you can add to your squad afterwards.

I always assumed his eyes were blind but gave him the thermal vision due to it and i thought he enhanced his hearing. Just goes to show that even though i watched movies, I didnt truly understamd it back when i was younger. Thank you for correcting me.

I've been sold on the mythos of Riddick and his mysterious upbringing since Pitch Black. I'm elated that the 4th movie is finally going through as well.

I can’t put one about another because I consider the story very flexible with substance and meaning. I’m watching pics black again for for the hype
He actually explains it to you in the movie if you pay attention. Kyra ask's him how she can get eyes like that. He explains to her that she has to get thrown in a slam for a long time, hopefully there will be a Doc in there that can shine your eyes. His eyes are not like that because he is Furian, his eyes are like that because he was locked up for so long he had a doc shine his eyes so that he can see in the dark better.

That explanation could have been just a lie he told them for fun. The likelihood of being a lie is the same as the one being the truth.
@@marilynman it's what happens in the game. no eye shine until you get it done. the game was also called chronicles of riddick and if my memory serves me well, was made in parrallel to the movie of the same name to serve as a prequel....it was made by vin diesels game studio and vin diesel was a producer on the film. it's an awful lot of effort to go to to make that non-canon

Riddick is still one of my favorite movie characters, I really enjoyed the story of Escape from Butcher Bay you get to find out how he got the shine job from the holy man in a triple max prison

I always enjoyed the idea that Riddick is based off the drow Drizzt. Darkvision, outcast without a home to return to, expert martial prowess. Since Vin was a D&D player at one point I'm sure he has had a similar idea.

one thing, dunno if they are going to change it but the 3rd movie doesn't end with him going off into deep space. It ends with Riddick going back to the Necro flagship and then,after killing his way back through and killing Scar, he goes after Vaco who Scar tricked into going into the Underverse and the movie ends with Riddick standing at a window as the ship moves into the Underverse. Should be interesting where they take that or if they are going to ret-con it and have Riddick go to Furia

According to Riddick, while in Butcher Bay he received eye surgery (a "surgical shine job", as he calls it) from a doctor who gave him permanent night vision in exchange for "20 menthol KOOLs".
