I remember that fairytale story like it was yesterday. Stunning once in a lifetime victory. Some bitter people still can't get over it but deal with it - Greece won fair and square against all odds.
@Darwinek Who's bitter about it? Can't be Portugal surely, they lost to Greece in the group stage never looked like winning. That's the only reason Greece qualified from the group and then Portugal were beaten again by Greece in the final and again Portugal the hosts never looked like winning. I do believe England and possibly others such as Italy would've knocked out Greece had they faced them in that tournament but that doesn't change the fact that Greece were worthy winners. I just feel Portugal can't be bitter about that tournament as they should feel the most responsible for making Greece Euro's champions other than Greece themselves.
@@cddb5408 Greece beat apart Portugal, the defending champions France and the best team in Europe that time, Czech Republic. And we had a tie with Spain. What makes you think that England, or italy, or the Netherlands could come with something better? Greece was the beast TEAM in that competion. Not the one with the most famous players, not the most fun to watch, not the team with players in the big leagues.. Greece was the most commited TEAM with all players and coaches focused to their purpose. Its unfair if anyone says that Greece was not a worthy champion. A story of a skilled but second class striker playing at a non top club, who becomes the hero of a tournament leading his national team all the way to the trophy: 1982 Paolo Rossi (AS Perugia) winning WC with Italy in Spain. 2004 Angelos Charisteas (Werder Bremen) winning EC with Greece in Portugal. Two very similar stories: Both players faded our afterwards and didn't ever since reach even near performance to that of their "perfect" tournament. Also both were considered second choice (no starters) in their national teams, even few months before their respective finals.
great video but, please come back with the derby days 🥺, and can you maybe do a derby days on brazil when the public come back? there is a lot of superclassicos here, like gre-nal or the paulista derby.
Yes, Denmark was actually a very good side and didn't make the tournament originally just because only the group winners did. Greece in the other hand never had even scored a goal in a major tournament.
@@HockeyJokerit We scored a goal VS Chech and Slovakian Republic(1-2 for the other side) and we finished the tournament of EURO 1980 with 1 point(0-0 VS Netherlands). But I will remember the tournament of EURO until the end of my life.
@trancemadmaz Yeah for 3 reasons. (1) 16 team format was harder than the format Denmark won with only 8 teams. (2) They played vs Portugal in Portugal (3) They had already beaten Portugal in the group stage and people thought maybe that was a 1 off and Portugal are the better team so they'll get it right next time. But they didn't, Greece won again and again it wasn't a lucky win Portugal just couldn't play and were never in front in either game. A fully deserved title but I can't help think if a better team were in the final than Portugal then Greece wouldn't have ever been allowed to win this format which is the hardest Euro's format there ever was. They needed the group stage win vs Portugal just to reach the knockout stage. They only scraped 1 point in the next 2 group games because they were 1of the weakest teams on paper in the competition.
@@cddb5408 Also the players. Denmark had world class talent from the likes of Peter Schmeichel and Brian Laudrup where as Greece had the likes of Theo Zakarakis and Angelos Charisteas who were good players but not in the same league as those guys. The Danish team of 92 would probably beat the Greek side of 04 by a score of 2 or 3-0. In fact I'd say the Danish team of 92 was as strong as the Portugal team of 2016
@@HockeyJokerit Also only 1 pt separated Denmark and Yugoslavia in the qualifying group. Yugoslavia player for player were arguably the best international team in World football at the time when you take into account the success of Red Star Belgrade winning the European Cup in 91 and the several number of players that went on to become huge stars in Serie A. The Danes beat Yugoslavia 2-1 in Belgrade and Yugoslavia beat Denmark 2-0 in Copenhagen. It was very close

i wondered this too... baia had won the champions league with porto that year, no? but another portuguese here on youtube told me that baia was old at that time and ricardo was younger and more promising than him... maybe that's why he picked him over baia... anyway, i think ricardo wasnt that good at the 2004 tournament, but better for us for scolari picking him, that helped us in winning the trophy 😁😁 his reaction as a goalkeeper in the corner of basinas in the final is bad!
It's interesting that Brazil haven't won a World Cup since 2002 plus before last week, Argentina had not won a Copa America since 1993. I say interesting, because for me, at international football, it's the teams who are solid defensively that tend to be difficult to beat and in turn, end up winning these competitions. You look how solid Italy were defensively in 2006, hardly scored any but still won it. Yet on the flip side to this, Brazil's all out expansive attacking approach with two defenders saw them lose 7-1 to Germany in 2014. And what better example to use than Greece in 2004. They knew they didn't have the quality to go toe to toe with sides, so they just made sure the defence was as solid as it could be and played to keep clean sheets, which saw them win the tournament. Very different approach to sides like Brazil, Argentina, France, Netherlands etc etc. But my question, from an entertainment perspective, is has football since 2004 been more or less entertaining than the period of the 80's, 90's and early 00's?

As a Greek I want to thank Angelos and the rest of the Greek team for one of the happiest moments of my life. I will remember that win until I die. I was euphoric for days to come.
I remember that fairytale story like it was yesterday. Stunning once in a lifetime victory. Some bitter people still can't get over it but deal with it - Greece won fair and square against all odds.
@Darwinek
Who's bitter about it?
Especially hearing that from English newspapers and ''football experts'', that never won nothing except the WC they've hosted back in '68.. and it was a controversial one to be fair..

England were very good in the 1990's.
Also had very good Euro's last year. Did as well as any finalist in a major has ever done similar to Euro96 which they only lost in the virtual final vs Germany.

Only Greeks can do this. Somebody told me about Denmark in 1992,but everyone knows in Greece how difficult is to reach this achievement in Europe for our standards. We hadn't academies, structures and most important a good knowledge. And is amazingly unbelievable how these guys had learned tactics in such short time and to win finally this trophy. A story of a skilled but second class striker playing at a non top club, who becomes the hero of a tournament leading his national team all the way to the trophy:
1982 Paolo Rossi (AS Perugia) winning WC with Italy in Spain.

This was a far bigger shock than Denmark winning euro 92
Yes, Denmark was actually a very good side and didn't make the tournament originally just because only the group winners did. Greece in the other hand never had even scored a goal in a major tournament.
@@HockeyJokerit We scored a goal VS Chech and Slovakian Republic(1-2 for the other side) and we finished the tournament of EURO 1980 with 1 point(0-0 VS Netherlands). But I will remember the tournament of EURO until the end of my life.
@trancemadmaz
Yeah for 3 reasons.
(1)
16 team format was harder than the format Denmark won with only 8 teams.
(2)
They played vs Portugal in Portugal
(3)
They had already beaten Portugal in the group stage and people thought maybe that was a 1 off and Portugal are the better team so they'll get it right next time.

Scolari fault not picking Vitor Baía over Ricardo
i wondered this too... baia had won the champions league with porto that year, no?
but another portuguese here on youtube told me that baia was old at that time and ricardo was younger and more promising than him... maybe that's why he picked him over baia...
anyway, i think ricardo wasnt that good at the 2004 tournament, but better for us for scolari picking him, that helped us in winning the trophy 😁😁 his reaction as a goalkeeper in the corner of basinas in the final is bad!
I have an impression that Brazil is gonna win the 2022 WC in Qatar.Mucha suerte!
