The Greek Maradona | The Best Player You've Never Heard Of

- Known by many as the “Maradona of the Balkans”, Vasilis Hatzipanagis, is widely considered to be the best Greek player of the last 50 years. Born to Greek political refugees to the USSR in October 1954 and after playing 3 seasons in Pakhtakor (Uzbekistan), he moved in Greece after a lot of paperwork in 1975 for the club of Iraklis, Thessaloniki. Due to visa issues, Vasilis only played one match outside of Greece against Valencia, however for Iraklis fans, he is a legend.

Me too. It's extremely sad not only for him, but for fans around the World we never got to see him play for and against better teams, and only because he was born a refugee. Many beleive sportsmen should steer away from politics, well I for one beleive politicians should steer away from sports. Greeting from a peruvian 🇵🇪 living in the United States 🇺🇸.
🇬🇷 🇷🇸
@@jorgeespinoza3938 it didn't have to do with the "political refugee" part but rather with the extremely strict transfer rules and contracts in Greece back then (a club could renew the player's contract without the player's consent for up to 7-8 years) and the fact that Iraklis wouldn't sell his star player for ANY price...on the contrary, being a political refugee helped him leave the USSR to "repatriate" to his home country (the Soviets didn't sell players abroad at the time) and eventually, to save his own life (his whole former teammates in Pakhtakor died in a plane crash when they were flying for a game)...
Hatzipanagis is a god in GREECE and a true diamond. He had the chance to play in a big club, but at this time the law was very strict with the players contracts. Every player was like a '' property '' of the team and only the president had the right to sell him. Iraklis F. C was making more money with the tickets and they didn't sell him even some clubs offered a lot of money for him. Finally he finished his career in Greece&and they recognized him as a Worldclass footballer. TOP!
Vasilis Hatzipanagis was the G.O.A.T. in the Greek Football History.
Definitely the greatest player in Greek football history.

@Dimitris Du Funny because Hatzipanagis and his parents were renown communists. It is you the mentally intense patriots who disallowed him to play in the national squad because of his political opinions, I strongly believe that my country has grown a lot since the dark 70s but it seems not. Well it's your loss, us the gifted ones will always find a haven.
Also, in 1984 he was invited to the World XI among the biggest players of that time.

K. Nestoridis of AEK Athens in the 50s and 60s scored 17 goals from corners. But he is also unknown to the young fans and abroad. One of the best Strikers of all time in Greece, known for his exceptional ball control, speed and finishing.
It's a strange world. How could I never heard of him? A hidden diamond, somewhere in Greece, with all respect to this country.
@Yes Sure. But remember, it was in 80s and I lived then in Poland. We had no sports channels then ;) There were 2 channels of public TV and this was all. The matches of European cups were shown only when Polish teams played or there were quarterfinals or up. So, in all those years the chance to see Iraklis in Poland was close to zero. Funny fact is that Hatzipanagis played one national match against Poland in 1976, but I was 3 years old then and not much interested in football yet ;) Of course later I've seen exceptional Greek players like Saravakos or Mitropoulos, when Greece national team played in some matches against Poland, but I was not aware that maybe even better guy is playing in Greece.
Heracles never let him make a transfer. Different times...no matter how much money they gave Hatzipanaghes was forced to play at Heracles or stop playing football. He choose to continue his career for Heracles. I'm Greek and i know this story from a Hatzipanaghes' interview at a Greek TV channel(ANT1) if my memory is correct and he said that firstly, Lazio and Porto wanted him, but Heracles refused the transfer and then he played only for Heracles. But he played for a team that gathered players who were the greatest and played at different clubs and one of these players was Hatzipanaghes. I don't know the name of the team but you could search for it

More than 100m
100M is nothing, more like 150M
That's an understatement.
150 maybe 200 depending on age.
If Zidane existed today as a football player he would be worth 450m.
"Vasia" was one of a kind.If he played nowadays , he would be a superstar playing in top teams of the world.
So sad that we couldn't know about him and watch him.. Greetings and respect from Turkey, one of the legendary players of Fenerbahce is Lefter Kucukandonyadis also a Greek, there's a statue of Lefter near the Fenerbahce stadium in İstanbul, did you know that?. He was a true legend, amazing skillful player, hundreds of goals he scored.. I wanted to meet with him but sadly he died 7 years ago at 85. I only visited his grave...
Lefteris also play in fiorentina and those years it was very very difficult years for transfers
They did a survey 5 years ago at the biggest sports site in Greece for the biggest Greek footballer in history, Vasia (that's his nickname) took 70%+ of the votes. He was filling up the stadium in every match. His biggest accomplishemnts were a 6-0 win against Panathinaikos (Panathinaikos was a powerhouse at the 80s), the victory against Olympiakos at the Greek Cup final (the game went to penalties after a 4-4 draw, it could be nice to search for the highlights) and the fact that he scored 9 direct corner kicks. His trademark move was the multidribbles at the corner area. There were two diffenders that were injured their backs due to his dribbles. The player was an unlucky fenomenon, his teammates didn't deserve him.
Can you please link the survey?

Kofidis, Dimopoulos (at Vasia´s career-finale) were pretty good.
He really was special. Unfortunately he only played in Greece. If he had the opportunity to play in Europe's big leagues he would have been well recognised.
@Rolman80 80 Greece is in Europe but it isn't part of the big leagues especially at that time and for the club he was playing at. The issue was that he couldn't transfer to the big Greek clubs nor to any big European league (Spanish, English, Italian)
Hatzipanagis was so crazy that he didnt wanted to leave greece and go to the biggest teams of the world.

HE WAS A LEGEND MAN... HE PLAYED LATER IN AEK ATHEN. He made 21 Goals for the Turkish Team at this Time when turkish football was under class.
More than one of the best players to ever play the game, Vasia has a golden heart. His sincere kindness brings tears in my eyes every time i see an interview of his. Outmost respect from a Panathinaikos fan!
I was a University student in Thessaloniki from 1984-88. I was a regular to Kaftantzoglio, only to watch Vasya pulling his extraterrestrial tricks. Vasya is above clubs, he belongs to everyone. Lucky the ones who watched him play in his prime, unlucky the rest of the world who lost the endearment of such a diamond.
To give an example, lets say, Athens mid 80's: AEK Stadium (or Panathinaikos or Olympiacos) AEK - Aris 12.000 spectators. AEK - Panahaiki 7.000. AEK - Iraklis 20.000 Even supporters of other teams would attend the game just to watch HIM. The same goes for every other home team playing vs Iraklis. The sad part of the story is that Iraklis was an average team - historic club but average team - and sometimes it was laughable and frustrating at the same time to marvel of Vassia (his nickname) to dribble two of three sorry mates, pass the ball through the eye of the needle for a teammate just for him to miss in front of the post. The directors of the club was too afraid of the supporters reaction in case of selling him, not to Greece's big three but to European clubs, so he remained tied to Iraklis for all his career. His only honor was a single Greek Cup, but this guy deserved to have lifted the Champions League trophy (then, European Cup) playing for some great club.
The other sad story was that the then strict FIFA rules prevented him of playing in the Greek national team, for in his youth he was a member of the USSR Olympic team. Back then, if you had a single cap in a national team you was excluded for life to play in another nations team. His only cap with Greece was in a friendly vs Poland, and as a matter of fact HFF was penalized for this act. You look today the Swiss national team with only six or seven natives and you shook your head. Different times...
Hatzipanagis stayed in Thessaloniki for the rest of his life and there is not a single day that he is not stopped in the road by football fans wanting to express to him their admiration and memories of watching him -regardless of club favorites. He is a very shy and modest guy and loved by everybody here in Greece. And this tells a lot in this country for it is an extremely rare reaction. The best Hellene player of all times.definitely one of the best 10-15 of the wold, and it's a shame that they didnt let him play in national team, in a bigger club in Greece and then in Europe.
Even though i am an AEK fan when Heracles played in Athens i would go to watch the match he played in unfortunatlly most of the TV archives were lost due to overtapping and with no disrespect to Maradona the things i have seen him do have not been done by anyone else since then and one sticks in my mind, Heracles were playing Olympiakos and Vasilis had the ball and was facing the corner flag with the defender right on his back with nowhere to go so what he did was play snooker by hitting the ball from above with the underside of his foot and making it spin to the right while he went left leaving a dumbstruck defender looking at the corner post......magic
Im ARIS FC fan, but, Hatzipanagis was a phenomenon for Greek football, its very bad for the sport that he stayed in Greece and did not moved to a big European club.
Wow that's a really great story. What an amazing player!
His style resembled so much maradona's. A magician who could had easily played in teams like juventus and real madrid in those days.
R.I.P MARADONA
"We will always remember you"
Hatzipanagis didn't play for Uzbekistan. He played for Pakhtakor club from Tashkent city, Uzbek Soviet Republic, and USSR team! Older fans in Tashkent still love and remember him.
At least he was lucky enough to escape the plane crash in 1979...
