In 2004 as the Euros were going on, I was dating a girl who I was really into. I don't normally get like that but with this particular woman I knew she was the one. Anyway, midway through the tournament she dropped a bomb on me and said she was having doubts and not sure if we were right for each other. I was up against it. By the time Greece got to the final I'd made up my mind that their amazing run to the final in against unprecedented way was like me having that situation. If Greece could win Euro 2004 then surely I could make this woman change her mind. When Greece best Portugal in the final I used them as the inspiration to not give up. A week or so later my efforts paid off. It's 2022, we've been married since 2005 and have 5 children. Nice one Greece

I'm Greek and a fan of Italian football since the 90s , I loved defenders like Maldini , Canavaro , Zambrotta , etc . When Greece wasn't in a tournament , Italy was my team , I celebrated the 2006 world cup like crazy , so many players in that team that deserved one . Buffon 💓 , Del pierro , Inzaghi , Totti , Pirlo ... What a team.

@@rafinhasupersayagin I was just 4 months old at the time so obviously I can't remember, you don't know how much I wish I was older to really live those moments. I have seen the celebrations from videos and heard stories from my parents, it was pretty wild, I'm sure you can find footage of the celebrations somewhere but it definitely isn't enough to get the same feelings as the people who where there. My parents tell me that there was a great feeling of unity and happiness that lasted throughout that summer as Greece hosted the Olympics as well, everyone was just overwhelmed with joy

Starting from the game vs Spain onwards, because the result vs Portugal was a pleasant surprise we didnt think would have any continuation, streets would empty when Greece was playing and everybody would watch the TV. Especially in the knockout phase, the whole thing was indescribable. We would win, wreck the appartment during celebrations and then the whole town, city, village would descend to the central plaza screaming, celebrating, waiving flags, singing songs etc. The tourists too, the immigrants too.
Even im not Greek im so proud of this guys. I remember watching this tournament as a kid. I had a posters of whole team in my child room. You deserve it 10000% and your team is now history. @@hanz7478 Without Nikopolidis Greece would not have made it. He was already aging back then but he was in excellent form in that tournament. When you watch the matches and see how many captures, difficult ones, he made, you understand why Portugal, Czech Republic and France who were the 3 favorite teams could not score a goal. To be noted, Greece was playing a tactical defensive game which was extremely clean - for example in the match against Czech Republic Greeks did 16 fouls (and all clean and non-violent) while the Czechs who were playing offensive football did 27 or so fouls and many were quite violent ones. A very peculiar type of game that was not repeated again, even by the same Greek team. It was the product of the moment, the right players under the right coach, all tied in a close-knit group that really worked as a team (all of them were friends, no rivalries - quite a rarity in a Greek team!)

I'm Bulgarian but I love this Greece team. Bulgaria 1994 and Greece 2004 are my favourite football moments. Unfortunately our teams(Bulgaria and Greece) are bad now but I hope that one day both of us will be great underdogs again :)🇧🇬🇬🇷❤️❤️

Portugal’s 2016 win is nothing like this at all. You played weak teams in a crap tournament. You didn’t even win a game in the group stage. The euros since 2016 have been a farce.

For those who criticize the defensive tactics adopted by Greece they'd better remember how Italy and France ( 2 teams with 20 times the talent of Greece ) reached the world cup final just 2 years later. Portugal's win in 2016 is also a very vital example of how even very talented teams win trophies in modern football.

Opponents Greece Goals 4 7 Shots on target 30 21 % of goals/target-shots 13% 33% Total shots 92 47 % of t-shots/shots 33% 45% Possession 56% 44% Corners won 51 21 Offsides 10 19 Fouls committed 123 103 Bookings 17 18 Sent Off 0 0 You clearly see that for all the defensive Game of Greece : 1) The Greek team was more focused and more productive when attacking 2) Its superb defense led opponents to shoot out of target and go to corners leaving them little space to score 3) Contrary to common notions, ball possession on average was nothing spectacular, it was not like half-pitch game 4) Greek team had double offsides since opponents played often technical off-side to avoid the set-piece traps of Greek attack 5) ... and then the most amazing! Greek team did by far less fouls than its opponents in spite of playing defensively. Its opponents also received as many yellow cards as the Greek players and to be noted (that is the picture not given by the stats) in most matches, the referees had a very heavy hand against the Greek team being influenced by the vision of the defensive games - quite a number of Greek fouls were not fouls at all and many of the yellow cards were quite heavy-handed (the matches are there for everyone to see with his own eyes). In fact in both the games against Portugal I remember referees giving a couple of "not-so-fouls" to Portugal just out of regret of having given "non-fouls" to Greece. LOL! This was the cleanest, most sportsman-like defensive team to ever appear in a Euro cup. Not only they did not kill the game, they uplifted it. The fact that they did not let their "star-opponets" score can't be held against them.

Remember, hearing how in my neighborhood in Sofia/Bulgaria, people going crazy after every game and goal of Greece. It was the closest to the emotion we experienced in 94 USA world cup. It was really something special and big, to see e neighboring country going that far in a big tournament.

just today in one of our slovak newspaper there was article about greece and its phenomenal win in 2004. I was very young back then 10yo and played football, i watched euro and I can tell that greece deserved it. It was shock, but again they had good players, and players make a team )

Nikopolidis, Seitaridis were legit top 10 in their respective positions in Europe at the time and Tsartas ability in long passes was unmatched, nobody in that tournament was even in the same realm as him at that specific part of the game.

Greece has done an Ultimate Miracle by beating all odds, it was an example of standing alone in an 150/1 to win the trophy chance as Greece was the second least favorite team to win the tournament after Latvia and somehow they still did it somehow and shocked the world, i was 10 years old at that time, after they beat Portugal they got my attention, but after winning it beating Portugal again for the final, it was one of the best adrenaline rushes a kid can ever get because of football! This was a memorable match when i was an elementary school student. I supported Portugal to win, but still Greece really showed the passion on this tournament. Their road to final was something else. ❤ Indonesia. Hoppefully Greece will be risen next world cup.

Football like any sport is more mental than physical, we as the audience only see the dribbles and the shots and the physical side, what we can not see is the mental fight every player is in, the pressure, the nervousness and the fear. Pay attention to body language and attitude in every game Greece played this tournament, and you will see what wins trophies. Examples are vs CZ team, when they miss a chance to score on Greece they grab their heads in disbelief, they blame eachother, you can see frustration more clear than anything... When the Greek team miss one of the few chances they got they just applause eachother. This frustration is so obvious vs Portugal too, both games, watch the players and you can almost hear the thoughts "is this really happening? What if we lose to GREECE?! You know the story is incredible when you realise that Greece was playing in only their Second European Championship and managed to beat Portugal,who were also the hosts. Unbelievable ❤️😍
Up until 2004, Greece had only qualified for a single Euro, 1980, and a single World Cup in 1994. Combined results for those tournaments were 5 defeats, 1 draw, goals against 14, goals for ...1. Although, big greek clubs (Panathinaikos, Olympiakos, AEK) were considerable forces, upper medium level, in European Competition, lack of deliberate planning, unfortunate coaching choices and a general unprofesionnalism in regards to how players and clubs were treating the national team had produced those very poor results. To add insult to injury, the only two times Greece had qualified for big tournaments, they played against ....Netherlands, West Germany, Panenka's Chechoslovakia, Argentina, african champions 1994 Nigeria and the best Bulgaria of all times. What people outside Greece also fail to realise is, our 2004 squad was quite possibly the least talented (in terms of individual talent) national team at least from 1970 onwards and in fact the most talented players of the era (Tsartas, Liberopoulos, Georgatos, Alexandris, Nikolaidis, Stoltidis, Zikos) were either substitutes or not even in the squad at all. 2004 is the primal example of perfect chemistry and form, winning over talent.
The team is actually getting stronger. Tie result with Spain and a tie result with Belgium, in a friendly the last two games of the national team. Another German coach is organizing us once again. We hope.

In 2004 as the Euros were going on, I was dating a girl who I was really into. I don't normally get like that but with this particular woman I knew she was the one.
Anyway, midway through the tournament she dropped a bomb on me and said she was having doubts and not sure if we were right for each other. I was up against it.
By the time Greece got to the final I'd made up my mind that their amazing run to the final in against unprecedented way was like me having that situation.
If Greece could win Euro 2004 then surely I could make this woman change her mind.
When Greece best Portugal in the final I used them as the inspiration to not give up.
A week or so later my efforts paid off.
It's 2022, we've been married since 2005 and have 5 children.

When Greece wasn't in a tournament , Italy was my team , I celebrated the 2006 world cup like crazy , so many players in that team that deserved one . @@rafinhasupersayagin I was just 4 months old at the time so obviously I can't remember, you don't know how much I wish I was older to really live those moments. I have seen the celebrations from videos and heard stories from my parents, it was pretty wild, I'm sure you can find footage of the celebrations somewhere but it definitely isn't enough to get the same feelings as the people who where there. My parents tell me that there was a great feeling of unity and happiness that lasted throughout that summer as Greece hosted the Olympics as well, everyone was just overwhelmed with joy

Starting from the game vs Spain onwards, because the result vs Portugal was a pleasant surprise we didnt think would have any continuation, streets would empty when Greece was playing and everybody would watch the TV. Especially in the knockout phase, the whole thing was indescribable. We would win, wreck the appartment during celebrations and then the whole town, city, village would descend to the central plaza screaming, celebrating, waiving flags, singing songs etc. The tourists too, the immigrants too.

@@hanz7478 Without Nikopolidis Greece would not have made it. He was already aging back then but he was in excellent form in that tournament. When you watch the matches and see how many captures, difficult ones, he made, you understand why Portugal, Czech Republic and France who were the 3 favorite teams could not score a goal. To be noted, Greece was playing a tactical defensive game which was extremely clean - for example in the match against Czech Republic Greeks did 16 fouls (and all clean and non-violent) while the Czechs who were playing offensive football did 27 or so fouls and many were quite violent ones. A very peculiar type of game that was not repeated again, even by the same Greek team. It was the product of the moment, the right players under the right coach, all tied in a close-knit group that really worked as a team (all of them were friends, no rivalries - quite a rarity in a Greek team!)
That year Greece was the David Vs The Goliaths (Portugal, Spain , France) and produced a good quality team football. Respect for that generation.

The Greeks in that tournament didn't have a single name in world football except perhaps Karagounis and he played mostly in the Greek super league. For those who criticize the defensive tactics adopted by Greece they'd better remember how Italy and France ( 2 teams with 20 times the talent of Greece ) reached the world cup final just 2 years later. Portugal's win in 2016 is also a very vital example of how even very talented teams win trophies in modern football.
A great coach sees the strenghts and weaknesses of his team and plays accordingly. no need for blame here. Rehhagel knew what he had to do to win - and they did. Nothing but respect for that.
The crazy thing was that France was the reigning euro champion, and Greece managed to knock them out.

You clearly see that for all the defensive Game of Greece :
1) The Greek team was more focused and more productive when attacking
2) Its superb defense led opponents to shoot out of target and go to corners leaving them little space to score
3) Contrary to common notions, ball possession on average was nothing spectacular, it was not like half-pitch game
4) Greek team had double offsides since opponents played often technical off-side to avoid the set-piece traps of Greek attack
5) ... and then the most amazing! Greek team did by far less fouls than its opponents in spite of playing defensively. Its opponents also received as many yellow cards as the Greek players and to be noted (that is the picture not given by the stats) in most matches, the referees had a very heavy hand against the Greek team being influenced by the vision of the defensive games - quite a number of Greek fouls were not fouls at all and many of the yellow cards were quite heavy-handed (the matches are there for everyone to see with his own eyes). In fact in both the games against Portugal I remember referees giving a couple of "not-so-fouls" to Portugal just out of regret of having given "non-fouls" to Greece. LOL!
This was the cleanest, most sportsman-like defensive team to ever appear in a Euro cup. Not only they did not kill the game, they uplifted it. The fact that they did not let their "star-opponets" score can't be held against them.

Remember, hearing how in my neighborhood in Sofia/Bulgaria, people going crazy after every game and goal of Greece. It was the closest to the emotion we experienced in 94 USA world cup.

I was very young back then 10yo and played football, i watched euro and I can tell that greece deserved it. It was shock, but again they had good players, and players make a team )

Nikopolidis, Seitaridis were legit top 10 in their respective positions in Europe at the time and Tsartas ability in long passes was unmatched, nobody in that tournament was even in the same realm as him at that specific part of the game.

Greece has done an Ultimate Miracle by beating all odds, it was an example of standing alone in an 150/1 to win the trophy chance as Greece was the second least favorite team to win the tournament after Latvia and somehow they still did it somehow and shocked the world, i was 10 years old at that time, after they beat Portugal they got my attention, but after winning it beating Portugal again for the final, it was one of the best adrenaline rushes a kid can ever get because of football! This was a memorable match when i was an elementary school student. I supported Portugal to win, but still Greece really showed the passion on this tournament. Their road to final was something else. ❤ Indonesia. Hoppefully Greece will be risen next world cup.
For anyone wondering why and how this team won... Football like any sport is more mental than physical, we as the audience only see the dribbles and the shots and the physical side, what we can not see is the mental fight every player is in, the pressure, the nervousness and the fear.
Pay attention to body language and attitude in every game Greece played this tournament, and you will see what wins trophies.
Examples are vs CZ team, when they miss a chance to score on Greece they grab their heads in disbelief, they blame eachother, you can see frustration more clear than anything... When the Greek team miss one of the few chances they got they just applause eachother.
This frustration is so obvious vs Portugal too, both games, watch the players and you can almost hear the thoughts "is this really happening? What if we lose to GREECE?! Im paid more than their whole team combined and so are all my teammates, how are we losing?!" , thats what their minds was full of instead of winning.

Up until 2004, Greece had only qualified for a single Euro, 1980, and a single World Cup in 1994. Combined results for those tournaments were 5 defeats, 1 draw, goals against 14, goals for ...1. Although, big greek clubs (Panathinaikos, Olympiakos, AEK) were considerable forces, upper medium level, in European Competition, lack of deliberate planning, unfortunate coaching choices and a general unprofesionnalism in regards to how players and clubs were treating the national team had produced those very poor results. To add insult to injury, the only two times Greece had qualified for big tournaments, they played against ....Netherlands, West Germany, Panenka's Chechoslovakia, Argentina, african champions 1994 Nigeria and the best Bulgaria of all times.
What people outside Greece also fail to realise is, our 2004 squad was quite possibly the least talented (in terms of individual talent) national team at least from 1970 onwards and in fact the most talented players of the era (Tsartas, Liberopoulos, Georgatos, Alexandris, Nikolaidis, Stoltidis, Zikos) were either substitutes or not even in the squad at all. 2004 is the primal example of perfect chemistry and form, winning over talent.
