Wrong. Chas Chandler said Jimi only agreed to come to London if he intro'd him to Eric (the interview is on youtube) Chas asked Jack Bruce if Jimi could sit in with Cream as a favor. So that was the first time Jimi played in Britain. He played one tune, Killing Floor, while Eric had a smoke. Eric thought Jimi was great but he, Jack, and Ginger were ticked off that Chas hadn't told them Jimi would try to upstage them at this important early gig playing behind his back, etc. It didn't work. Roger Waters was at the gig and his takeaway was how powerful Eric and Cream were. I have never seen a single mention in the Brit. Music press that mentions Jimi slaying "god" that night. Chas put that myth around to promote Jimi. Jimi played thru a Marshall (Eric's) for the first tiime and then asked Chas to get Marshalls for him and said he wanted to form a power trio, like Cream. Jimi has said he first heard a wah pedal on Creams Tales o Brave Ullysses live BBC then went out and bought one. On 1968 Cream was the biggest concert draw in the world (I was at their third to last gig) and Cream and Eric were more acclaimed than Jimi and the Experience. Eric and Cream were topping Jimi & Exp (I saw them May 17 1969) in the Brit Music polls, and Cream's Wheels of Fire was number one, was the first ever Platinum record, and the first double lp (that wasn't a Greatest Hits lp) to sell a million copies. Eric and Jimi were friends who admired each other. Jimi often praised Eric and Cream onstage and in print. He wanted to form a musicians commune and Eric was his first choice. When Cream did the blistering live Sitting on top of the World (on the Goodbye lp), Jimi, Mitch Mitchell and George Harrison were in the front row joining the standing ovation. The day before Creams last ever concert Jimi wa on the live Lulu show. He paId tribute to Cream, naming each member and then, stopped playing Hey Joe and ran the show into overtime playing Sunshine of Your Love. After Cream's breakup Jimi and the Exp. were the the biggest most acclaimed live act in the world.

I find it very interesting that Etheridge conveniently doesn't mention WHERE ERIC CLAPTON GOT IT FROM: BB KING, FREDDIE KING, ALBERT KING, ALBERT COLLINS, BUDDY GUY etc etc, Really John Etheridge???? I understand that he was referring to Clapton's influence on rock guitar (btw, EC did NOT have more impact on rock guitarists overall than Jimi did), but how does he not mention the preceding blues guitar masters that Clapton CLEARLY copied???? There is no Mayall album in 1966 with the way Clapton played on that record without the influence of Freddie King for instance.

Meeting Eric Clapton was NOT the "only reason" Jimi Hendrix came to England as Etheridge states here. Actually, Jimi coming to England had absolutely NOTHING to do with Clapton, that came after the fact that Chas Chandler felt it would be the smarter move to initially build Hendrix's name, band, and debut recording(s) with an English band. It was AFTER Chas had explained this strategy to Jimi that Jimi said: "I wanna meet Eric Clapton." Also, EXACTLY what Etheridge describes about Bloomfield "not even wanting to play" after hearing Clapton in 1965-66, can be said about Clapton after hearing Jimi in late '66! Hendrix scared the pants off Clapton and everybody else at that point!

@@guitar1067 No MORON, that was NOT the ONLYYYYYYY reason Jimi came to England. So Chas didn't mean LITERALLY that was the SINGLE and ONLY reason Jimi agreed to come to England, that's the point. Everything you state in your LONGWINDED response is OBVIOUS and COMMON KNOWLEDGE. Again, Jimi meeting Clapton was not LITERALLY the only reason Jimi came to England. YOU are wrong.....
