  • John reminisces about his encounters with Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix at the time of his first band Rush Release (with future Gracious! drummer Robert Lipson) in 1966-67. He also discusses interesting similarities between his early life and that of drummer Bill Bruford as told by Bill in his Autobiography.

I love John talking. He's just so enthusiastic and he's also one of the best guitar players on the world stage.

I met John wayyyy back in the 80’s when he was part of the teaching staff at a jazz summer school thing at Aberystwyth Uni. I was a heavy metal drummer aged 17 and he just asked me one day: “Fancy a jam? We’ll do some rock & blues tunes, no jazz”
So we did and the two of us spent over an hour thrashing though classic hard rock/metal and my god could he shred! He was a total monster, as well as being a gentle giant of a man. One of my fave memories to this day.

The difference between this dude and hos generation of ego-ed rock stars is astonishing.
What a lovely bloke Etheridge seems to be...I could listen to him chat all day.

I think John identified the reason why many people go to university-to escape reality! Great guitarist!

Yes! I did exactly that - broke up the one and only band that I ever lead rather than just fire the one problem guy. Being the leader was exhausting enough as it was (means you have to do everything because everybody else is too lazy, etc.), but add firing someone on top of that. . . I couldn't do it.
