Nice episode, I liked the photographs. Regarding appearing tack sharp, an old mountaineering rule of thumb - “Every thousand feet of elevation is comparable to moving 300 miles further north,” when planning for weather.also, your friend Matt lost his master canoe status by constantly changing sides when paddling. This is a common newbie tactic. An accomplished canoe driver can effectively use a J stroke and a sweep stroke to keep a canoe traveling straight’ or to turn the canoe in either direction. Changing paddling sides is a tell-tail giveaway the canoeist is more a rank beginner. Plus it gets the inside of the canoe entirely too wet. Here’s to helping you appear even more “tack sharp”.

Yeah, I know, old video. I'm still going to comment. I was stationed at Fairbanks, AK, in the U.S. Army back in the early 90s. Drove the ALCAN both ways. I used to love seeing people up from the lower 48 or newly stationed in Alaska when they dipped their hands in those "lovely, clear streams" in the summer when the realization hit them. That water is COLD! I still miss it even if it was 61F (16.11C) today here in Southwest, Texas. With ugly high pollen counts btw. Back in my film days my favorite lens for Landscapes and personal work was the Nikon 300mm f4. (I was lucky to get that). Even now shooting Sony APS-c with primes from 16mm f1.4 up to 50mm f1.8, I find myself grabbing the 50-210mm kit often because I like to crop in on things and get the compression. Finally going full frame before long with a clean, used Canon 6D and trading/selling off the a6000s and lenses to finance the glass for the Canon. The Sony gear is excellent, but I want to shoot FF for a few reasons and the 6D fits those needs well. My plan for lenses is to get used L glass in the 24-70, 70-200, and a nifty 50 for those just because it has its place. I'll probably have to go f4 on the zooms, but hopefully 2.8 on at least one. That's a long winded way (like a 2 minute Tuesday normal session) of saying I just keep finding myself always gravitating back to the telephotos for that kind of look only they can give.
11:17 visiting Canda is on my bucket list. I was hoping to do it this year but then Corona happened... When (in your opinion) is the best time of year to visit Canada?
Thank you for making these amazing video, You inspire me so much. Thank you peter. I hope you see this, I want to make videos as great as yours, you teach me so much about video styles and editing. Thank you Also question: What is a good mic for a beginner like me? And possibly a good beginner camera, since I use a T3i? Thanks
Good luck man i really hope u achieve what u dream for !!! Go for the canon 80d thats what peter uses for vlogs at times, and its super amazing and not super pricy and a rode video mic pro is ur friend
Don't think you can't make decent video just because of your camera & lack of mic. Here's a video I made using that EXACT setup (T3i camera & absolutely nothing else) ua-cam.com/video/xL5hhXD8KWY/v-deo.html
Is there something specific that your current T3i can't do or does not good enough? Cheaper alternatives to the suggested 80D that have equal video functionality are the Canon T7i or M50. Do you have any prime lenses for shallower depth of field? If not check out the $100 Canon 50mm STM. On an APSC camera like yours it gives a very similar effect as the Canon 85mm on a FF cameras Peter uses (have a look at Peters video "THE KING OF B ROLL" on how such a lens could be used in your videos) I don't have much experience with external mics as I often lay music over my entire video just like you do with many of your. So I can't recommend a specific one. For me a big reason for this is that the sound recorded in camera is often unsatisfactory. So if you plan on recording more sounds especially voice a better mic will certainly make a difference. I would suggest getting a mic before getting a new cam because the look of your videos is nearly the same no matter the camera. Not so with sound.
Yeah I don't know, my video just doesn't look as crisp as I would want it to. I also would like to get at least 60 fps in 1080p. But yeah I should probably look for a lens and mic first. Thanks for the tips bro :)
Your commentary about how you wildly underestimated the weather in the mountains had me literally laughing for 2 straight minutes. Thank you for that. Cheers.
Im a director/filmmaker from Ohio who learned alot from you! I also date a Canadian woman from Vancouver Island.. U should go there sometime and film with us! I use Leica SL with all diff linds of FF lenses! Thanks for the new vlog!
@lostintimeline Yeah I'm thinking more so for sports and concerts. I've never really used my 70-200 for anything else (although I'm tempted for portraits)
@@Bobby_sprinkles absolutely do it if you want to incorporate the background/landscape! Sometimes its tough to get the framing you want just because of the needed distance but it turns out soooo good.

Cheaper alternatives to the suggested 80D that have equal video functionality are the Canon T7i or M50.
Do you have any prime lenses for shallower depth of field? If not check out the $100 Canon 50mm STM. On an APSC camera like yours it gives a very similar effect as the Canon 85mm on a FF cameras Peter uses (have a look at Peters video "THE KING OF B ROLL" on how such a lens could be used in your videos)
I don't have much experience with external mics as I often lay music over my entire video just like you do with many of your.
Where do you live on the island? I was just at the horne lake caves
Victoria! Its amazingly beautiful
I love Victoria, I've been thinking about moving there.
He is a gem
Victoria is my favorite place! As well as my moms home island of Trinidad! Also i smoke weed but its not legal in the states..nor that BC quality 😂😂
I don't need a telephoto lens cause I take photos with my microwave
Bro, the toaster oven will make your shots way more crisp. The dynamic range of the microwave is outdated!!!
Probably gonna buy one next month I'm broke af rn lol
Lol
This is the best comment of all hahahahah THANK YOU
In soviet Russia microwaves took photos with people.
Wow ! The view is phenomenal. Forget the lens review, lol.
Just the view and the water is just mind blowing!
I hate when you're switching lenses and the animal runs off, or the light changes. Having two cameras is the ticket!
Matt Hatchett: indeed dear! I never thought about that. Lol
That's what we film photographers always used to and still do. Not for lenses but for 2 types of film or film speeds.
Can you please do ' WHY EVERY PHOTOGRAPHER NEEDS PETER MCKINON ' ....You are the best 👍👍
Yet another AWESOME video, thanks for this! Loved surprise of the opening, totally going to use that 👍🏻
I've got the 70-200 f4 but really wanting the f2.8
Is it worth it?!?
@lostintimeline Yeah I'm thinking more so for sports and concerts. I've never really used my 70-200 for anything else (although I'm tempted for portraits)
@@Bobby_sprinkles absolutely do it if you want to incorporate the background/landscape! Sometimes its tough to get the framing you want just because of the needed distance but it turns out soooo good.
@@Bobby_sprinkles Tony Northrup uses a 70-200 at 200mm for portraits.
@@RyanLennoxBradley Gonna check out their work. Thank you!
Y'all just imagine this guy if there was no such thing as broll
Canon 16-35 & 28-70 You just can't do it wrong with them. Time in the field = Perfection. Always put in the time
Can we just take a moment to discuss the water and how amazing it looks. Almost want to taste it...
Yeah sure😀
Haha "the water is so cold, probably around 5 degrees"
Not so long ago me and some friends went camping with tents, and the water was around 5 deegrees, and we went swimming.
I live in norway btw.
Goodness!!!!! That's way to cold!
i mean we were not too long in the water, probably around 1 minute. we went out serveral times (1-2 minutes in the water)
