  • Sick of the RAM 1500 and Ford F-150? Well, you've now got a new option. It's the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 and it has just been updated as a remanufactured car in Australia (that's where the convert the vehicle from left-hand to right-hand drive for the Australian market). Paul Maric gets behind the wheel to see if it's any good.

    • @rich7447
      @rich7447 5 місяців тому

      The half ton class of trucks transitioned into lifestyle vehicles. Typical buyers in this segment are towing lighter trailers/hauling lighter loads and want the comfort of a softer suspension. Plus the ZR2 is specifically an off roader which further softens the suspension. Anyone that wants a Chevy pickup to tow or haul heavier loads is going to step up to a 2500 or 3500.
      The current payload leader among class 3 pickups is the regular cab F450 (still a class 3 in pickup form - GVWR/GVM of 14,000 lbs) with a maximum payload of 8,000 lbs/3600kg.

    Can someone please explain the science behind why these USA things all have like 700kg payload, when our much smaller medium Utes, such as ranger/hilux can get the 1T. I suspect it’s due to suspension setup….but surely they can’t be that different.

    • @matthewh8005
      @matthewh8005 5 місяців тому +4

      Suspension setup and because of the size of these things if they were rated to full load you would need an MR licence here.
      They have higher load capacity in the States buts rated lower so Joe Bloggs can still get one on his regular car licence.

    • @Khaos_1325
      @Khaos_1325 5 місяців тому +3

      @@matthewh8005 The bed payload is the same in the states. You can get up to a 1 ton payload if you select the right model but not on the ZR2. Unless you select the workhorse models then most of the US trucks have lower bed payloads. Its a mix of the suspension for comfort and performance in higher models and the fact that the size of the vehicle already has more weight on the rear than a Japanese truck. In general most people would rather have more comfort at the cost of a little bed weight considering most are not used for work. But yes if they did sell the models with larger payloads and towing capacity then it would require and MR licence fully loaded in Aus. I live in the states at the moment and I basically never see a low spec model unless its loaded up for work, maybe one in thirty trucks.

    • @rich7447
      @rich7447 5 місяців тому +2

      Both of the previous answers have some good info, but a lot of it comes down to the fact that we don't really use this class (class 2A - GVWR/GVM over 6,600 lbs up to 8,500 lbs) for heavy work. The class 2A trucks have suspensions designed to make them very comfortable over long distances. This is something that the stiffer suspension of the Hilux doesn't offer.
      Anyone planning on hauling heavier loads or towing a larger trailer (4.5t trailers are not considered large here, medium trailers start at 10,000 lbs) is going to skip the class 2A trucks and go straight to a class 2B (8,501 to 10,000 lb GVWR/GVM) or higher.
      We have the advantage of being able to drive anything with a GVM/GVWR up to 26,000 lbs on a standard passenger license.
      My daily driver for 12 years was a 2011 Ram 2500 diesel (class 2B) and it was also payload limited (around 1500kg payload). This didn't cause many issues when towing trailers up to 14,000 lbs, but it was not really suitable for larger trailers especially if they required a bed mounted hitch. Currently waiting for a factory order of a F450 pickup which will have close to 6,000lbs/2.7t of payload.

    • @rich7447
      @rich7447 5 місяців тому +1

      I almost forgot, the Rangers that we get in the US don't have a 1000kg payload rating. The maximum that we can get is in the stripped down 2wd Ranger XL which has a rating of 1,805 lbs/818 kg. By the time you get to a 4wd Lariat you are below 700kg of payload.

      If you plan to tow a trailer of any size very often or for a longer distance the Chevy to get is the Duramax equipped 3500HD. Fuel economy will be much better than any of the gasoline/petrol options and the heavier truck will handle the load far better. That being said, both Ford and Ram are outperforming GM when it comes to towing at the moment.

    Id love to see you review the RAM with Cummins engine. The 2500 I think it is.

    • @rich7447
      @rich7447 5 місяців тому

      The Cummins ISB is available in the 2500,3500,4500 and 5500 (4500 and 5500 are only available as cab and chassis). The biggest problem with the 2500 (my daily driver for 12 years) is that the engine is heavy (over 1000 lbs without transmission) and the 2500 is limited to a maximum of 10,000 lb GVWR/GVM (class 2B truck is 8,501 to 10,000 lbs). This limits the payload and can be a problem with trailers over 12,000 lbs when you have more weight in the truck itself. Plus the new 2500s have coil spring rear suspension which is less than ideal for mid-size trailers (10,000 to 15,000 lbs).
      If you want to go with the diesel in the Ram the 3500 SRW is a better choice than the 2500 especially given that there is almost no difference in price.
      The other thing to keep in mind if you are going for a short bed is that Ram had the shortest bed of the 3 HD brands. This can cause issues with cab clearance on tighter turns with a fifth wheel.

      @@rich7447 mate, I appreciate what youre saying but all of that is irrelvant to Aussies. The 3500 is incredibly more expensive to the 2500 here in Australia and requires a light truck licence. We only get the 2500/ 3500 Laramie here and the 3500 as amazing as it would be is not something I can easily get or afford. Even the 2500 is pushing what I am willing to pay for atm

      @@matthewh8005 It's unfortunate that they rape you so badly for the higher GVWR pickups in Australia. The difference between a Ram 1500 and 2500 is $7k in the US. Ram 2500 to 3500 SRW is another $2k.
      It should cost no more to convert a 2500/3500 to RHD since the cabs are the same as the 1500 and the steering on the live axle is much simpler than it is on the IFS.
      Light truck license for a 3500 is overkill too. We can go up to class 6 without upgrading to a rigid truck license (class B). I finally have a build date on my F450 King Ranch which will double as my daily driver when it arrives. It's a little over $100k out the door (truck prices have gone crazy) due to the higher trim, but no upgraded license required. With the conversion I believe that you are paying close to that for the F150 Lariat.

    Why no testing lane keep assist in this review, glad to see the big grin it was bringing. I watched the F150 test yesterday and from memory this guzzler is down on power/tongue and acceleration with far worse fuel economy than the ford. I couldn't help but notice the fuel consumption on this everytime you showed the dash, it was either bad or atrocious with 28•3 ltr/100ks at one stage. Your comment about fuel being reasonable here when you can buy fuel in America under 65c/ ltr was a surprise and the yanks still complain, can't wait to see towing test in one of these fuel pigs.🤯🤣

      This is exactly my problem with these big trucks. I tow an American Rockwood caravan of around 3.5 tons...and I use an Audi Q7 with air suspension. I have a full 805kg payload, which I can use while towing 3.5 tons without exceeding the GCM, GVM, Rear axle load etc. If I had to "upgrade" to one of these American trucks, I would just gain a lower payload! I an very happy with the Q7 as a tow vehicle.

      @@OlyMar83 They aren't popular with those who tow more than a boat or light trailer. The 1/2 tons (Silverado/Sierra 1500, Ram 1500, F150, Tundra) are family haulers that people use to tow small trailers every once in a while. If you tow a small trailer often or a mid-size trailer at all you move from the full size pickup segment to the large pickup segment. I personally wouldn't tow more than 8,000 lbs with a 1/2 ton and even less with a mid-size.
      My Ram 2500 was fine for trailers up to 14,000lbs, but is not suitable for my Big Tex 25GN 26000lb gooseneck trailer. Still waiting for Ford to build the replacement for the Ram.
