    We went to Santander many years ago , the ferry crossing was really rough coming from Portsmouth, then we drove down through cantabria to galicia, absolutely beautiful ! Our holiday in galicia was wonderful , we stayed in a little place called o,grove ! No one spoke English, not even in the hotel great , love it when I can practise my Spanish.

    Tourism brings Spain multi-billions of euros yearly. It’s a shame that the news doesn’t accurately depict what the people of Spain are saying. They seem to be against the current tourist model in those cities that they are complaining about. (Not a tourist caused problem). I suppose a headline of “The Spanish don’t want tourists” is more interesting. I feel for the people in the cities and I hope the government solves the issues so all can coexist happily. I’m looking forward to losing my tourist status with next year’s permanent move to Bilbao. Great job as always. Keep it up!

      Exactly.All folk should ready Laurie Lee's sublime books and how Spain , pre the 60s was a very poor country with widespread poverty and associated issues. Don't wish for what will inevitably cause more social and economic issues than are currently there. Why not petition for more affordable house building and transport infrastructure?

    Last week Cadiz was littered with anti tourism posters, there was similar graffiti inland in Jerez too, and l've noted it in Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante too, so that the whole coast. I don't blame them, a whole generation of Spanish kids can't work & live, buying or renting, in their own cities.

      Stopping tourism would be a great way to bankrupt the economy. How would you replace the thousands of lost jobs? No tourists, no service industry, closed hotels bars and restaurants. No need for hire cars and the airports and reliant industries would suffer too.

    Misinformation....I have a friend who lives in Valtuille de Arriba who owns a very unique, open air bar there. I walked through the pueblocito twice while walking between Cacabelos and Villafranca de Bierzo on the Camino. I think it is more of a case of a hostel not located in the town proper trying to snag pilgrims off the Camino. The wine produced in that region is excellent. Starting in Cacabelos and ending in O' Cebreiro is one of my favorite sections of the Camino.

    The govt should be regulating the amounts that owners/landlords can ask for in rent and punish greedy owners that do not follow the law. It´s not the fault of tourists who are encouraged to come to Spain in the thousands, but the fault of greedy airlines, hotels, and landlords.

      Build more housing units. There needs to be far more housing available for citizens and tourists. The government is causing this crisis and restricting existing housing solves nothing and gives the government more power. Do you think they’ll allocate and restrict in a fair and benevolent way? It's not only Spain that has a problem, it's all of Europe. Europe is becoming a resort for rich Americans and Asians, while at the same time losing competitiveness.
    And no, tourism doesn't "bring money". A few people get rich, and the rest of the country suffers. The more a country depends on tourism for its survival, the more it becomes a 3rd world country (e.g. Maldives, Bali, Caribbean countries, etc...). Spain needs more "real" industries, tech companies, etc...and less tourism.
    Why is there a boom of tourism in Europe?
    - More and more Americans and Asians are getting richer and can afford to come here. I get it that you want to see this continent...but we are a small place already crowded, we don't have space and infrastructure to accommodate a few hundred millions people, even if they come just for 1 week.
    - Social media has brainwashed people to think that they "have to" see certain places in their bucket list, so they all go to the same overrated places (Barcelona, Paris, Rome, etc...)
    Can't people just stay home or go somewhere else?

    • @jonniesantos
      @jonniesantos 3 місяці тому +3

      American here… we didn’t make it to Europe during our working years. Now retired and on a smaller budget, it’s on our list (we’ve seen a dozen cities so far). However, both Barcelona and Rome were disappointing because of the sheer number of tourists (us), however the locals were lovely.

    • @johndutton349
      @johndutton349 3 місяці тому +2

      @@jonniesantos That is fine, you worked hard and deserve to see it. The problem is
      - The instawhores and social media influencers using public spaces as a filming studio, annoying everyone, filming people without their consent, etc...
      - Everybody going to the same place AFTER it becomes famous (e.g. nobody knew about "Cinque Terre" a few years ago, not even Italians...now suddenly everybody wants to go there and the place is a hellhole during peak season). Why do people have this sheep mentality?
      - AirBnB...started as a way to rent out your spare room (or your spare air mattress, that's how it actually started in SF), but of course greed took over and now it's an industry of its own, competing with hotels but without all the regulations etc....
      Real estate is a scarce asset, for god's sake (it's incredibly difficult to increase the supply, unless you want to create favelas in European cities), and it's a basic need. It must not become a vehicle of investment and greed.
