    The kite used to be nicknamed the divorce papers on our old boat. We've learned to love a good spinnaker day. Congratulations on a positive first attempt and good timing getting it down.

      Cheers! It was a little tense when we realised we weren’t actually sure how to get it down. You may have noticed I sent Brioni forward to work that one out. 😆
      We are hoping for a lot more downwind days in the future but something tells me they are going to be few and far between in the Caribbean.
      I’ve taken to calling our spin “The Kraken!” In a strong Scottish accent. Feels a fitting title.

    Think I've got this worked out now. You probably have a Cruising Chute there, not quite a spinnaker. The clue was in the clew! A spinnaker just has a head and a port and starboard clew so the whole thing just swings around forward of the forestay when you gybe because there's no fixed tack. The cruising chute, on the other hand, is fixed at the head and the tack so when you gybe the clew has to pass between the mast and the forestay. the advantage is you don't need a spinnaker pole, although it might help on a dead run in light winds.
    For dowsing you should be able to just release the clew and let it fly. If that doesn't work you could blanket it with the main so it doesn't flap around too much.
    More fun to be had, I suspect!!

      Spent ages trying to work this one out on what we have. So I think it’s a spinnaker but not as we know it. Because we have the width of two hulls, we can run sheets and guy lines from both port and starboard clews. So when we gybe, it basically swings around in front of the boat as a big balloon and then we adjust the lines to trim. The width means we don’t really need the pole to push the clew outboard but it probably reduces our angle of use a little. 180-130 degrees at best?

    Wow! So much going on in this one!
    Does that count as logged flight time in a Piper Cherokee for you guys? ✈️
    The Whales!!! Incredible how close and how much time they spent! 🐋
    Finding that sail on board Indioko is such a treat! Good on you figuring it out ⛵️

      Haha! Yeah, I’m not sure we managed to stick the landing tho.
      The whales were insane. Mum, teen and baby hung around for over 30min with us. They were so relaxed and kept coming over to see us. The mum was probably the size of Indi.

    Nice video guys, the spin needs a little wash I guess.

      Yes we were so surprised that’s all it needed! Honestly thought we were going to open up a bag of rags 😆

      It could do with a little bit of talc for sure. But she’s got a strong sun frame. Nothings. Few spot welds couldn’t sort out 😂 😝

      What perfect timing! I’m sure they have some impressive stories of whale encounters to rival our little session. Still amazed they were so relaxed to just hang around with us.

    That needs a good wash. I am sure those brown bits should be white. Mind you it does go with the poo episode’s we had..😂

    You could just saw patches on the holes and make it last a lot longer?

    • @RedSeas
      @RedSeas  2 роки тому +1

      We have thought about sticking some Dacron patches on by would prefer to find some nylon to keep the weight down. It will be a fun day when it explodes tho

    Great job, guys! I was nervous for you, and I'm safely seated on my couch! No offense, but I'm searching UA-cam for the proper way to douse a spinnaker next. Love your sense of adventure! Cheers!

    • @RedSeas
      @RedSeas  2 роки тому

      Haha let us know when you find it! Hopefully we will get the spinnaker up quite often now that we know it’s actually in one piece.

      @@RedSeas Reporting back... So it seems you did just fine except that it might be helpful to release or blow the tack or clew of the sail before fully dousing it with the sock. This can be facilitated by using a quick release shackle called a Tylaska. A word of caution... don't wait until the sail is fully doused to release the tack because then, of course, you'd be blowing the sausage and we wouldn't want that on UA-cam, now would we? Sorry! I couldn't resist. Looking forward to your next hoist!

    • @RedSeas
      @RedSeas  2 роки тому +1

      😂 now that might have an impact on our viewing figures! Good to know we weren’t too far off in our guess work. We let the sheet and tack of the leeward fly enough that the sail collapsed and then it was much easier to pull the sock down. Still. Practice makes perfect…well, better rehearsed at least.

    is it possible to wash a sail? I don't think I've seen anyone do that.

    • @RedSeas
      @RedSeas  10 місяців тому

      It’s a fair point. You don’t see it happen all that often but it is possible. I’ve only heard of people getting sail lofts to do it for them so I’m guessing you need a bit of space to do it. Still, where there is a will there is a way I guess.

      It’s actually a funny story. He offered two highland cows as a dowry but I like to think it was a joke. We have been married now for a while (neither of us are counting how long tho so I can’t tell you).
