- Part 1 of my playthrough of 'Panzer' designed by James M. Day and published by GMT Games.
Playing Scenario 1 'The Crossings' from the Base Game, using some advanced and optional rules.
A few misplays occur but I think I caught most of them!

Hello everyone, thank you for watching. If you like what I do, please support the channel by subscribing, 'pushing the bell' and liking the video - it helps a lot! 🙂
Those TWEEZERS, though!!! Watch it, you'll put an EYE out with those!!!! 😄
Although this is solo play, it still has great utility as initial exploration. I like how you explain what's going on, and some of the considerations, in addition to the mechanics of the game. Excellent tutorial value there!
Hi Stiglr - yep they're big (great for pointing at things and stops my fat hands from being videoed !!!). Thanks for the kind comment, my friend. :-)
Glad to see you’ve got going! It can be a bit overwhelming at first but nothing is too complicated. I find it quite addictive playing solo.
Thanks David, I'm using your suggestion for rolling to see which side places commands first! :-)
Thanks for the video, Rough. Couple of items to point out. Bog check for moving out or moving within the hex, so any turning requires a bog check. For the German tanks in the town, they are in the Alley, not the building, it is still light cover but the tanks have not driven into the buildings where they can get the bigger DRM. For your firing, you must have the range must be less than or equal to the range. So those medium range shots by the Soviets were actually long range. The moving DRM only applies if the target has a Move or Short Halt, movement in prior turns has no effect. Looking forward to the next video.
Thanks CS appreciate the help, there's a lot to remember - I think I also missed a bail out roll for the damaged Soviet tank!!
One of my favorite games. I have a few under my belt but have not spent too much time with the advances+ rules. I have all the expansions.
Excellent work! Thank you, now I want this game more than ever.
26:06 - Vehicles may freely enter Building hexes, as they are not actually entering the Buildings themselves, but are in the Alleyways between the Buildings.
Therefore, any vehicle located in a Building hex is actually occupying Alley type terrain.
Great show agan. I discovered your excellent channel just a few days ago with the Atlantic Chase teaching videos. Contrary to Atlantic Chase I already play Panzer for years with almost all advanced and optional rules in solo mode that came with the last expansion France 40.
I play this game on board or with the excellent VASSAL module and often with miniatures (1 hex = 4 cm conversion and using often Memoir44 hexes to put in specific terrain).
Certainly looking for the new Panzer Afrika Korps game that will be published by GMT in 2023/24.
I hope to discover more videos of your channel ! Keep these coming.
Thank you for your kind comment - I'm also looking forward to the new Panzer game!
Great playthrough Rough, nice to see the inclusion of some advanced rules. Looking forward to seeing more.
Thank you, Fred! 👍
Iv been interested in this game ever since I saw it on the shelf for the first time. I have a love/hate with the complexity though. Might be a game I have to work up to after I have more wargames under my belt. Thanks for the playthrough!
It's not that bad, just try the basic rules and add the advanced rules one by one - it's a great game!
Glad you’re digging in with more rules!
Thanks Todd! 👍
Hello, I have har this game for about five years, read the rules, or looked at it several times but never fully understood it. Still really wanted to play it, but there has been no good videos out here in youtube until I know seen, still it's a year old, you made an absolute fantastic work on this! I might as well take it out on the table this weekend cause you explained it so well. Still basic is still enough for me 😂 Big thumbs up 👍👍👍
Thank you! 😊
I watched for 6 minutes and looked what I saw. I'm now a subscriber. Good work.
Thank you, Frigenguy1! :-)
It's great to see new content for Panzer (since checking it out some time ago). Nice style and explanations, thank you! Subbed.
Awesome, thank you! 👍
Thanks very much for the video! Watching you work through the rules definitely helps me learn. I really like the laser line-of-sight tool!
Thank you Robert - glad they were of help!
This is great, thanks! I've had this on my shelf for a while and I've been too intimidated to try it. But I may give it a bash after I finish watching this.
Hello and thank you! Highly recommend you give it a go - just use the advance rules that tickle your fancy to start with. 😊👍
Thanks very much for putting these vids together, I have just started watching, very nice presentation and a superb primer for me.
Glad you like them and hope you enjoy the game, Norm!
Excellent play. Interesting system. Keep going, this is pretty good.
Thank you, Hethwill! 👍🙂
Very happy to see this. Just ordered via bgg. Great play through as ever, keep up the great work
Thanks Lee - I'm sure you'll enjoy it!! :-)
Great video, enjoyed it very much. Cool to see how the game is played.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Superb! See you in the War Room, Rough
Thanks Brun!! :-)
Great Part 1....You need to be my opponent with all those missed shots!!
Lol - you're not wrong!! :-)
Great video, thanks!
You counted the german tanks in the town as moved, but they aren't because they haven't a MOVE order. The Move/Fire is only for spotting purposes.
Thanks for the heads up. 👍
Nice, I'm enjoying this one more than I expected myself. I decided to start with MBT, but they look very similar other than the vehicles of course.
Hi Cole this is fun and yes, MBT is very similar (except as you say for the vehicles AND tech!).
i'm happy to see this game, good video and explanation as well like always ;-)
Thank you jedyman - glad you enjoy it! :-)
Alright been looking forward to this!
Ta! :-)
thank you very much consise and well presented
Thank you, my friend. :-)
Just what this Red Army Colonel needed
I like the laser pointer for line of sight!
Hi glorgau, it's called a 'Targetlock Laser Line' from The Army Painter. I got mine on eBay.
Awesome, I am alittle rusty on rules, still my favorite Tactical Tank game
Well done young fella. Still waiting for mine to turn up so I can 'ave a go.
Thank you sir - enjoying myself! 👍
Right! Good show
Hi. I've found your playthroughs of this game really useful and interesting. They persuaded me to order the game and I already feel quite comfortable playing the basic rules, plus the variable AP hit options. I also got the Allied expansion as I prefer being the Brits! Anyway, thanks for a very helpful run through. Will you be doing any more from Panzer - trying out some of the expansions, perhaps?
Hi Ian and thanks for the comment. Hoping to do more of the 'Panzer' expansions on the channel in the future. 👍
Thanks, I wanted to see how Panzer (East 1943-1944), GMT compared to Panzer Blitz, Avalon Hill ?
This looks like a blend of AH's PB/PL and ASL. Also it looks good for solo play 👍😉
I like the game a lot, you have to play both sides and you have to 'fudge' the commands (I use the 'reason' mentioned in this video). There are also solitaire rules in Exp 4.
It seems odd that one side gets all its shots before the opposing side, purely based on a random initiative roll. Lots of charts! Very interesting gameplay otherwise, thanks Rough!
Hi, there are optional rules to allow for staggered initiative by formation. This however does increase playtime. You're right - lots of looking up on charts and tables! (But I love the game).
Would it not be easier to put the Move/Fire/etc. counters next to the stacks/units? They are spaced fairly apart, saves you some tweezer-tinkering...
Hi Joe - thanks for the comment. I just find it easier and neater to do that. Besides, I like a bit of tweezer tinkering! 😉
@@RoughSwordsmanWargamer you monster! :)
The movement phase confuses me in the basic rules. It says to do things in initiative order. Then it says the SECOND PLAYER moves first? I dont get it
Hi GH, the player that wins Initiative gets to choose if they want to be the First or Second Player for the turn. This depends on whether you want to fire first or move first. So in the Combat Phase the First Player fires first then the Second Player fires. In the Movement Phase, the Second Player moves first followed by the First Player. Usually when you win initiative you'll want to fire first but that means the other player gets to move first. After a couple of turns you get used to it. Hope that helps. 😊👍
@@RoughSwordsmanWargamer thanks!
I have James Day's original Panzer game from Yaquinto 1979. I wonder how much the rules have changed over the years?
Would be interesting to know! :-)
Just wanted to be the 100th comment on here. Good game..🙂
I really need to get me a perspex slab.
Great video. May I knowwhere you got your laser for the line of sight and the tweasers? Are they specific gaming tools?
Hi and sorry for the late reply! The laser is called Targetlock Laser Line from Army Painter and is specifically made for gamers and the tweezers are called bent nose tweezers and are great for picking up small counters and keeping mucky fingers off them! Both I got from eBay - hope that helps. :-)
Monty, is that you? 🥷
If there's a 20% chance of getting stuck every time you leave a woods hex, then woods basically become impassable for vehicles.
...as they should be?
@@JoeKundlak Perhaps I'm saying I don't like the way this rule is being implemented. eg. why not just call woods impassable and be done with it, or do the die roll on entry.
You could then call any Rough terrain impassable, or?
@@JoeKundlak depending on the ruleset, rough terrain either costs more MP, or is impassable
I think you got the range calculation wrong. The column to be used is the one with same range or higher, not lower. Take a look at the example on page 16 of the manual.
Hi Davide, it was pointed out to me in the comments and is dealt with in the Part 2. 👍
@@RoughSwordsmanWargamer yeah sorry, I saw that in the next episode. Keep up the good work!
@Davide Pessach no problem 👍
I wasn't sure how to contact you with a question but I have set up Panzer Grendier Africia Korp and having a terrible time with the game. Having a very hard time finding tatics and ways to accomplish victory conditions. Been playing wargames for over 40+ years and I just don't get it with this system. Maybe I should try a different module in this system, Any Ideas??? I don't want to just trash the system because I don't get it but is this one of the least popular of their systems?
Hi charles, I'm no expert but I do love the system. All I can say is that I've found PzG different from most other tactical systems I've played. It's a case of wearing down the opponent by disrupting and demoralising the enemy units then assaulting (which is why many scenarios are many turns). I have Afrika Korp but have not had a chance to play it and it does seem to have a low appeal to players for some reason. The people on the Panzer Grenadier facebook page (which is very helpful and I recommend that you join) suggests Elsenborn Ridge. In case you haven't seen it, I do have a playthrough of PzG (with misplays!) which might be of help. I hope you persevere with it. Let me know how you get on. :-)
@@RoughSwordsmanWargamer I sure will thank you
It’s not one of the 10 in my Tac UP list but once I cross a couple more off I’ve got to try this.
But one thing, isn’t there an option in one of the Expansions that allows you to
use a marker to represent the formation on the map and then you keep the individual units in a holding box?
It sure seems like it could get unwieldy fast if you’re playing with lots of optional rules and wind up with stacks of multiple units with different turret facings and damage markers, etc.
Hi William, I mention your question in the next video - there are numbered counters that go on the maps and the unit and it's counters go onto a holding hex on the turn track sheet.
can it solo?
Hi - as you see I play it solo (playing both sides) but there are Solitaire rules in Expansion 4.
Hmmm ... the Germans have rather better tanks, and slightly more, and no other factor benefits the Soviets ... I wonder what the outcome will be ?
Nice. Oh boy, Ukraine.
You took on too much. You need to learn into the rules slowly. It is a simple system: however, it is designed to be a very flexible, highly customizable system, which players can enjoy at all levels of experience. I’ve produced dozens of videos on MBT, which basically shares rules with this system, and I still am not using the Command Span optional rule.
Hi and thanks for commenting and watching. I disagree, I thought I did ok (and my subscribers put me on the right track with the few mis plays that occurred). I wanted to introduce some advanced rules that appealed to me as the basic game seems too simple. This game is certainly one of my favourites and by the amount of views and comments this series has had, a favourite with my viewers. I'll certainly check out your channel. 👍
@@RoughSwordsmanWargamer Sometimes, it is fun to play one game many times and really get to know it well. (Particularly if you are on the spectrum!) Variety is great!!! It’s the spice of life!!! But it’s also fun to really get to know a thing! What is a game system that you are really getting to know well and that you will be playing many, many times this year?
@@RoughSwordsmanWargamer How many times have you played Panzer since this video? Why?
@@RoughSwordsmanWargamer I enjoy your videos and like the way you do things. Everyone has different ways to do things. That is what makes us all so wonderful!
