@@frogsgottalent1106 These games are available from a company called Second Chance Games here in the UK. Unfortunately, this particular game appears to be out of print and only available through the second hand market. If you are new to the hobby, check out my other recommendations for new players. Hope that helps and thanks for the comment.
I had considered this game for quite a while now, but after watching this I wish I had gotten a copy while it was still readily available! I'll definitely have to keep an eye out for reasonably priced copies or the P500 reprint.
I know I am late to the party, but I believe you can automatically follow damaged ships. Since it isn't a capital ship I believe there is a 33% chance it becomes unescorted, which then essentially gives you a "free" kill. If it remains escorted I believe there is no obligation to attack, and you can just disengage. So rolling to see if it remains escorted is essentially "free". You can also do other cool things like roll a different colored d6 with your torpedo rolls so you can see if they are duds right away.
Wasn't able to get the hunters, but was finally able to get "silent victory" Fantastic solo game to play. Really love this play through. Thankyou so much.
I have the 2nd edition setting on the shelf unopened. Just hadn't found the time to play until this big lock down started. Working on a couple of other games first.
Played my first patrol yesterday - British Isles! Two surface night attacks, sunk two large freighters, managed to slip away undetected from the escort in the second attack. Wasted too much torpedoes and deck gun ammo but better safe than sorry this first time around. The dies were with me at all times, just good rolls all the way. Before returning to port, a random event... Just a loose torpedo wounding some of my crew. It could have been much worse. Been watching your playthroughs before deciding on purchasing the Hunters. Great, clear and helpful playthroughs and with a good amount of enthusiasm, what could go wrong? Picked up a few details while rewatching bits of this part just now. Thanks!
Outstanding play through. The best on this game I've experienced thus far. I purchased this 3rd edition a week ago and you've made the rules read through even easier. I'm getting this on the table very soon bumping other games I recently purchased as a result. I appreciate you pointing out the patrol map revision by the game's designer to print out. Thank you for your time!
This looks like a lot of fun! It's like if Silent Hunter was a board game, I'll have to get around to picking this up along with '"The Hunted" for the whole 39-45 experience. Awesome video mate!
You have so many "New to solo wargaming?" videos! You should compile them into a single video - best solo wargames for beginners and share your thoughts on how they stack against each other and compare all aspects.
Great video, If you like this game, You should go check out GMT’s P 500 list where you’ll find Wolfpack which is a simulator putting you in command of a single sub or wolf pack where you or up to four other players engage convoys in the North Atlantic. I placed my order about a month ago on it and it’s already in art and final development department. It’s up and coming.
Hi jeromy - yep, I've already P500'd it and I should be doing a vassal playthrough with the designer Mike in the near future so you can see how it plays!
@@RoughSwordsmanWargamer awesome! Look forward to a live stream! Ask him if there’s a historical campaign for any of the historical Wolfpacks for me please.
Fantastic walk through, I was playing a couple days ago and if i might throw in a tip for anyone picking this up, Consider an extra sheet of paper for keeping record of targets tonnage so you dont have to flip over your sheet to try and keep track of various tonnages, (especially if you happen to run into a lot of convoys and plan to engage)
Excellent video! You did well to evade escort detection when you initially got damaged. That can be a downward spiral of death!! Watch out for the modifiers on the E2 chart. There is some vertically written text that is easily missed.
@@RoughSwordsmanWargamer I haven't got any Flying Pig Games yet and seeing the War and Pieces interview with Mark Walker has made me curious about Crowbar! I often spot you in the War and Pieces stream (although I tend to watch the video).
I love how the big fat freighter was all by its lonesome, yet the little rowboat was escorted. Must have been a small yet important cargo! One thing though..... with the Type VIIA, I don't believe you're allowed any reloads. Will be watching this as it is also on my table!
Hi Joe, thanks for the comment, yes the dice can give unusual results. As for reloading the Type VIIA, I can't find anything in the rules - could you tell me where that is? (It's not unknown for me to miss things!)
Rough, you should get a commission from GMT. After watching your videos of this game, I purchased it! And I enjoy so much, I will definitely order the other games in the series! Thanks for the introduction to my new addiction! Roll on!
Really enjoyed the video. Great game. I just played my first career in a type IXA. I was sunk by an aircraft in the last transit box before port on my 5th patrol. Ironically I shot down the buzzard that sunk me. Go figure? BTW, when you off loaded your mines you moved one of your torpedos from the front to the rear tube. I don’t believe you can ever move a fish from the front to the back.
Great video. Noticed your using third printing. My first printing VIIA mat Forward Reloads capacity of 5 and not 6 like yours, but my mat has a capacity of 1 in the Aft reloads box while yours has 0. I wonder why they changed it in later editions.
Thought I'd hate these Patrol'n'Write games, but after watching you and a few other people, I broke down and bought The Hunted, and I really love it. Don't love how you can either get OHK'd so easily, or how you can go on patrol after patrol, and run into nowt lol
Have you played it's WWI counterpart, 'Raiders of the Deep'? It is my favourite, just by an inch tbh, of these solo sub series. I like the fact you only have a handful of torpedoes, which makes the decision to attack certain targets, or not, more difficult
@@RoughSwordsmanWargamer Ah, thanks. That wasn't the problem; torpedo depth keeping (all) and premature detonation were (magnetic). Same difference when the dud roll take place, I was just curious is all.
I got Uboot some time ago. I don't particularly like using the phone app. I'm looking for a set of rules, that I could modify, for a Uboot solo experience. I do, however, like the look of this game, in it's own right.
If you can suggest 3 games for beginners that won't destroy their interest because of really bad luck at dice rolls or card draws or other randomness, what would you suggest? :)
Hi , just bought this game and loved your video play through. I am interested in finding and using the map showing the patrol routes. Are you able to point me in the right direction as to its whereabouts. Thanks Patrick
Hi. Thanks for the review. I own both the Hunters and the Hunted. And they're really fun and give a great sense of foreboding suspense. I do have a question: I can't figure out what the D-20 dice that comes with the game is used for. Do you know what the D-20 dice is used for? Thanks.
Hi Andrew, thanks for the comment. I don't have 'The Hunted' but for 'The Hunters' the D20 is used to roll on the North American Target Roster (T4) - maybe something similar for 'The Hunted'. :)
Ah. Thanks for the quick reply. I-Boat command has mostly kept me to the British Isles with one patrol in the Atlantic. They haven’t yet sent me to terrorize the Americans off their shores, so I haven’t had the chance to experience that. You said this is a great “intro to solo war gaming” game, and I agree. What games (outside of the Sequels to this game) would you suggest looking at next? Thanks.
I live in the UK and I'm trying to find some wallets that fit this card size (US Letter?). Couldn't help but notice you had some wallets for the charts - any advice on where to look to get them? Cheers!
Hi Scott, American 'A4' size is slightly different to ours, so I just got some A4 display wallets (I got mine from Asda!) and slightly trimmed the charts.
So why did u used the 1 ammo side at the deck gun attack? Couldn't be used as the 2 ammo side and then flipped? Because as it is, u used 2 ammo markers instead of 1.
