  • This video is about transporting your dog safely in your car using a crash tested safety harness. There are many harnesses available but not all are safe to transport your dog in the event of an accident. Watch this video for tips on choosing the right harness, how to put it on your dog and attach it to your car.
    What makes the difference between a regular harness and a safety harness as well as proper fit and form are discussed in this video. This is the harness Robert demonstrated on the Today Show's Pet Safety segment with Kathy Lee and Hoda.

    This is a great video that opened my eyes to the importance of using a crash tested harness. I just made a purchase and I bought the AllSafe Comfort Harness which is an upgraded model to the one shown in this video. Thanks for sharing this very important video about dog safety while riding in your vehicle.

    Unfortunately, at least for 2015 cars, rear seat belt tensioners were not factory-installed on most, like my Dodge Dart. The plastic clips that came with this same AllSafe I just got absolutely will not close with the seat belt in between the jaws, so they are moot. I will use it anyway. Thanks for your very helpful video. Maya is beautiful.

    For anyone who was struggling with getting the seatbelt to 'lock' -> in my Subaru, you have to pull the belt all the way out from the shoulder area, then slowly let a bit in, then a bit more, etc. so it ratchets back up into the shoulder in the 'locked' position. Then putting the clip on at the shoulder area will work.

    I have been tethering my dogs in the back seat since the late 80's. However I use what use to be my X-back sled dog harnesses and they work terrific. I hook them into the seat belt hook ups with a length of seat belt and carabiniers.

    The Sleepypod Terrain harness is a three point restraint harness that was the only one to pass Transport Canada’s safety testing.

    • @RobertCabralDogs
      @RobertCabralDogs  6 років тому +4

      The allsafe harness can be used similarly to the sleepy pod as well as with a short tether. The issue using the sleepy pod is that the dog has absolutely no mobility and most dogs will freak out with that type of constraint. In the case a crate is always a safer bet. I have seen a video in which the allsafe was crash tested and passed as well. The long tether is NOT recommended.

    My 10 year old lab husky mix just had TPLO surgery and needs to be prevented from jumping over the seats. He has always been loose in the car and when I return from running a quick errand he is always in the drivers seat! I am darn lucky nothing has ever happened. if the dog is really small, I would suggest using a crate. these harnesses aren't sized for small dogs. put the dog in a small crate behind the front passenger seat. that is the safest option. You might also find some crates that can be secured to the seat.

    Why is it necessary to lock the seatbelt with the red clips? As soon as you brake sharply, the seatbelt will lock on its own. That way, the dog has a bit more slack/freedom while driving normally.

    Awesome video about properly securing your dog in your car, and everyone should do. But sad to say I do not strap my Ruby in like this. How ever I do not let my Ruby up in the front seat at all and she is really good about that while I am driving. Plus I am a very careful driver, I never tailgate. Tailgating is a very big pet peeve of mine.

  •  6 років тому +3

    Got mine today. Looks and feels really sturdy. Although I bought the version from Audi with a small logo on a belt. But it came with no plastic clips. Anyways, Im still not sure if this system is totally secure cause of the length of the connection clip between belt and harness. I just feel like it is too long and the dog can be injured by front seats while hard braking... All the crash test were done without front seats, and their impact on dogs injuries are unknown. I've seen some people been using allsafe harness by putting the seatbelt directly through the harness. How do you think is it more safer? )
    When you watch allsafe harness crash tests, the best results are achieved when seatbelt goes through the harness directly. Here is a pic for better understanding my point of vew.

      I agree with you that the shorter the tether the safer it is. check www.4x4northamerica.com and get a shorter tether from them!

    •  6 років тому +3

      Thanx for response. My tether can be adjusted to the size of yours. But here is some info I found out on a web. According to MGA Research Corporation:
      Eliminating the tether and feeding the lap/shoulder belt combination through the back of the harness accomplished this. By keeping the 75lb test dog on the seat, the AllSafe Harness improved its performance under the Center for Pet Safety interpretation of ideal harness performance. To reduce the chance of risk or injury, the AllSafe Harness must be used with the seat belt in its shortest position without any slack. This is optimal from a safety perspective.
      p.s. I used allsafe harness for almost a week without tether connected directly to a belt. My dog feels pretty fine) I guess :) Connection looks more sturdy. Although I keep connecting a tether to a second seatbelt as an additional secure measure :) Just in case :)

    At 2:44 you state that the "AllSafe Harness" is government approved. By which government? No department or agency in the United States approves safety equipment for dogs. Unlike child car seats, there are no standards for "crash testing" dog harnesses. Anyone can make that claim.

    DO NOT BUY THIS HARNESS!! The red clips that are meant to secure the seatbelt and keep it locked will come undone when your dog leans back and sits on them. The harness itself is made of fantastic materials, but the clips are plastic and come undone extremely easily. Especially while you're driving and unaware. Maybe they work in some vehicle types but not all. I've tried in two different vehicles and both times my dog was not secure.

    • @sheltermutts4185
      @sheltermutts4185 5 років тому +6

      This is a fabulous harness and tether. I agree the clips are cheaply made. You can easily buy any clip you want on ebay for very little money. I bought some directly from China for a few bucks that are far better than what is supplied. But they all work exactly the same. Care must be used in how to apply the clip or none of them will work for you. If you can’t figure that out then NO harness will work for you. I sure wouldn’t pass on this harness for a few dollars in cheap clips. If you’re gonna be bold enough the scream “don’t buy this harness!!” you should at least provide a better alternative. Of course you didn’t do that because there is no better alternative.
