not that the regulated ones are necessarily a whole lot better... hence a large part of why "marketplace" even exists

Do you really want your neighbor selling his home to be used as a nuclear waste dump?
      Without regulation, this could happen.
Do you wanted convicted child molester working at your child's day care?
Do you want someone with typhoid preparing your meals (see the story of Typhoid Mary)?
Do you want people who are drunk or stoned driving next to you on the road?
The marketplace exists to sell things. It does not exist to regulate things. In the marketplace, selling anything counts as a success as long as the seller is not held liable for fraud or injury. Without regulation there is no meaningful way to hold sellers liable. Only the very wealthy have enough money to sue.

@@gregs.2679 Actually the three-point restraint has been the same design since 1962 and it's still in use.
On July 10, 1962, the United States Patent Office issued patent number 3043625 to Nils Bohlin, a Swedish engineer, for a three-point safety belt designed for use in road cars. The belt was straightforward, consisting of two straps that met at the hip and secured both the upper and lower body.
Instead of sitting on the patent and licensing it out to other automakers for a big ol' chunk of change, Volvo opened up the patent so that any automaker could incorporate it into vehicles. The automotive industry took the idea and ran with it, and it proved so safe and popular that derivatives of Bohlin's original design are still in use today.
      www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/55-years-ago-today-volvo-received-a-patent-that-saved-countless-lives/
Where you are it's probably out sourced, not because of the design of the seat belt but because seat belt/ car crash testing standards are very rigorous and they need their own the lab to do said to testing in.

One thing I've noticed: the kurgo harness, while properly secured to the dog, was NOT properly installed in the car. The packaging clearly states NOT to use the clip on the back of the harness, the carabiner should be clipped to the webbing itself. It also says the safest way to secure your dog is to pass the seatbelt through the harness

    • @aliciakowalski

Watching this video, I found the same frustrations, NONE of these looked like they had passed the seatbelt through the harness. I don't feel like they were even clipped in. I have been in several rear-endings (living in the GTA I find no one is really paying attention), and I use the Top Paw and a car seat cover/hammock for both my Boston Terriers. I slip the seatbelt through the harness and neither dog has been able to wiggle out of it, and have been safe in the car with each accident (they've only been in two while driving with me and/or husband).

  • @YukisNation
    @YukisNation 7 років тому +220

The Kurgo harness probably would have done better if it had been attached properly to the harness instead of the leash clip. Ya know. The clip the instructions CLEARLY say NOT to attach to the seatbelt because its designed as a leash tether, not a seatbelt tether and will not hold up in crash conditions. You're meant to attach the tether around the entire back strap of the harness. All three inhanced layers of it. Not the leash clip, which was the only thing that gave way in the test(maybe because that part wasn't meant to hold up in a crash!). People spend money on these items to protect their dogs but don't even bother to read the instructions! Just assume it works one way because it looks good. I can't believe the crash testers didn't even read the instructions. Kurgo clearly states how they tested the harness and which hook up they recommend as safest. These people are saying Kurgo doesn't follow threw with their claims yet they didn't even follow the instructions! Pure idiocy!

The racing harness is a good idea but will maybe only work for larger dogs if you can manage to comfortably strap them in. The product won't fail, meaning that it won't break but it may not properly hold the dog, so in an accident a dog may slip out of it. At the $400 price point it needs to work 100%. It's made for humans not dogs.

In 2013 I was in an accident with two dogs. The police who arrived told me that the best place for a dog in a vehicle is in a metal crate like mine were in. It protects them from impacts and keeps them inside her vehicle. It might be less fun and inconvenient to have to kennel them every time you get in the car but it will save their life.

Dunning Kruger You’re honestly so uneducated. There are so many crashes that aren’t the drivers fault. Trust me, I know. My mother got in a car crash a couple of months ago. She got a broken ankle and lots of other small injuries. It could have been much worse, the gas tank almost exploded with her inside. It wasn’t her fault at all, it was a young man who was drunk in a fight with his girlfriend. His car sounds out of control, hit my mother from behind, and spun her full 360 into a field. The man spun uncontrollably into a lamp post, and when I drive by I still see the dent in it. The young man survived unharmed, but not my mother. It costed her lots in damage even with her insurance, and I was so scared for her. It wasn’t her fault at all, she had never been in a crash and is an amazing driver at 37.

Yet, as a very proactive dog owner, I am sorry to be anal about it... 'any shampoo' will NOT do the trick as suggested as a tip Nr.1 for keeping fleas away. It is absolutely wrong!
Dog's skin is less acidic, besides dogs do not have the same sweat glands as humans do. As you are earning your living by reaching out to general public, you should be more careful with your advices.
Wash your dog in a species appropriate shampoo: reputable dog shampoos will be milder and will not strip your dog coat of natural oils. By regularly washing your dog in ANY shampoo your dog might ''experience'' contact irritation, dry skin, even reduced immune function.

I really want to see _at least_ two of each harness. Obviously proper testing would involve even more than two but it would at least help us see if it's just one part of the design that's faulty or if it changes or it's possibly just "one" faulty harness. I would've liked to see the red one done again because it looked like the carabiner hinged bit broke. The rest of it _seemed_ relatively sturdy (more than the others at least) so I would've liked to see if a second would have the same result or a different part break.

I HAD ONE OF THESE SOLVIT DELUXE CAR SAFETY HARNESSES FOR MY PRECIOUS BABY SHITAKE, A 36 KG BOUVIER DES FLANDERS. All was fabulous until the day my driver fell asleep behind the wheel of my Town Car with me and Shitake in the back seat!! That is when all hell broke loose, literally!!! We veered off the roadway in to a ditch. The driver woke up and veered back out of the ditch taking out a series of mailboxes in the process. Over correcting the searing after emerging from the ditch, he then mowed down a small sapling in the opposite ditch before hitting a bolder, which propelled Shitake out the windshield and straight in to oncoming traffic. It was an 18 wheeler with a full load on lumber on the trailer. Shatake bounced off the grill of the semi truck and was propelled into a bicyclist passing by. Another car slammed on the breaks to avoid the bicyclist and was rear ended by a winnebago. Shitake was laying in a heap in the roadway with massive injuries and bleeding profusely from multiple wounds. It appeared that she also sustained a broken back but was still clinging to life. My driver had to beat the dog over the head with a tire iron to kill her and put her out of her misery. I blame everything on this damn Solvit dog seat belt contraption that failed. And to think, this was the "Deluxe" model. I can't imagine what would have happened if we had went with the standard model. Shame on you Solvit for selling such complete crap!!

I pieced it all together afterwords from the police accident report that came much later. and the courtroom testimony This was all played out in court at great length due to litigation that occurred later The lawyers and eye witnesses painted the very vivid picture of the sequence of events during the lengthy deposition at trial. It was a total nightmare, believe me. First I lived through the horror and then I had to be victimized again by having to relive the horror in open court. This happened awhile back though and I have gone through a lot of counseling where I have begun to heal. For me I have found that sharing my story can be vary cathartic. If I can help save just one life through the telling of my story I find it all to be worth it. Yes you are right to be concerned with Solvit harness. If it were me I would destroy it completely so that it could never be used again and then throw it in the trash. I understand that you have invested in this item and may not be willing or able to do so. In that case I'm glad to hear that at the minimum you have modified it to hopefully function better. I hope no other pet owner has to go through the horrors I have been faced with. Be safe out there dear and thanks for replying. I am glad my story was heard.

My dog almost died because of the flea collar. When I put it on, I didn’t realize she had an open wound, very small. About 2 hrs after, she began having small tremors. Then she just couldn’t stop moving. Because I’m an RN, I knew this was abnormal. I took it off & gave her a bath. Then I called a Vet, who couldn’t help me. The brand? “ Advantage 2”. Also an important fact, she is only 5#.

Here is my story re harnesses. We were in Big Lots and spotted a leash that was also an in car restraint system-it 'plugged' into the seatbelt. So the first time I took our dog in our car with this leash, I hooked it up to her collar. When I got to the first stop sign in our neighborhood, I realized that if I jammed on the brakes, I would probably break her neck. So I went to PetSmart (USA) and purchased a (chest) harness. I didn't read anything about crash tests etc.-it looked good with her collar et al. So THIS really concerns me. I went and found the harness but there isn't any brand name on the label. The label simply says, "L" "R" "Front" and "Patent Pending". No sh** this last bit is even MORE disturbing. But I have to think that what we DO have is better than letting her 'free wheel' in the car (and more recently, in the RV). But, obviously, there needs to be better regulation on these things. Both the US and Canadian Govt's should be EXTREMELY ashamed. It will never happen but still.

I can't understand why the government won't take action on things like this. Yes we don't have actual laws regulating pet harnesses BUT we do have laws about false advertising and making false claims about a product. It IS illegal in this country to say a product is tested and safe for a certain purpose if it is NOT!! People simply have to demand that they enforce the laws already on the book!! Thank you to marketplace for exposing YET AGAIN, the level companies will stoop to in order to make a sale. Any company that would do this does not deserve the right to do business in this country. It makes it very hard for those companies that ARE trying to do right, as the ones making false claims can under sell the ones who actually make a quality product and have made the investment in testing to make sure their products do what they say. What we need is people to be made aware, and to both put pressure on their MP's to enforce these laws, and to boycott any company found making false claims on their products. Sadly it seems the only way to get through to these people is to make sure you hurt them in the pocketbook. Money is the only thing they care about.

Catastrophic failure, where their tether that held the clip to keep her secure would twist and twist until the clip came undone and my doggie flew out the window and shattered her leg, resulting in 2 surgeries. I wrote Kurgo and they really didn’t give a $hit. They sent me a few freebies, but they are still selling here in New Zealand. No apology, offer to help pay some of the over $3,000 vet bill and no follow up which they promised.

My major concern is that my dog doesn’t come flying into the back of my head. I’ve read over and over again that a secure and tied in kennel is the best way to protect you and your animal. As for flea control, go with something like Bravecto. It’s ingestible and is provided by the vet. Stop buying over the counter flea stuff. It’s useless, but likely not overall harmful.

I've made my own by using Horse Halters, turn it upside down, those are Built to hold a horse up to 1,000 lbs!! Those are double stitched and have sturdy hardware. Then you use the cars/vehicle's Seat Belt to go through the harness/halter.
I've used the horse halter idea since 1981 . I wish I could tell this from the Mountain Tops!!
And use NATURAL Flea drops, from Good old Dollar Tree stores !! Herbal combination keeps fleas away !

    1. Thats a dog.. in a transport designed for other species.
    2. If that collar would stay (not tear) on concrete 50-60-110 kmh. You dog will be handicapped or shredded to pieces.
    3. An actual safe collar for dogs, can only involve a gooood air bags as a vest, that will activate with hit and turn dog into a puffer fish. Dogs cant be belted like humans, plus not all dogs are the same, dogs(breeds) with different body structures.
Its a mess, it will involve a giant research spendings and end product will be too costly to be included with transport regulations.
Just for the joy of driving with your dog? You have a dog in your car, know the risks.

one of the biggest problems with these harness seat belts is the main restraint line, it usually has a cheep carabiner thats good to hold you dog in place but not designed to have any shock load on them, so they just open up. I think the restraint line should have some sort of shock absorber like a construction safety harness so it doesn't just go from slack to snapping into full straight.

(10:13) They shouldnt just have just normal steel locks, they should have the ones that you have to push up, turn and then push in to put the material inside, then let go and it turns back and locks, so you have to do the same thing to lock it up. I climb alot of adventure tree courses (courses made out of wood high up in the trees, that you climb in for fun) and safety is really important so they use metal locks like that, so you cant fall.

A dog that survived a crash is greater danger if fastened to a car in flames or a car that flipped over or is sinking. The harness should be designed in such a way that it should disconnect and release the interlock after impact. In addition, when I know my dog is free on the back seats, I drive with minimum allowed speed, I am driving in safety-mode-by-default. No dog-belt will be safe unless has the release-after-accident feature which I don't see happening any time soon.

I am only six minutes into this video and I can already see some of the major mistakes. First of all, when we buckle children, they need to be snug with the seatbelt and car seat. The dog harness allows too much room for the dog to move around therefore in an accident they are able to catapult a certain distance due to the slack in the harness, which will allow a strap to break. I also noticed the fireman's daughter is buckled incorrectly. First off she is wearing a jacket which allows the belt to be too loose. Second, her belt is not positioned well under the arm seat of the booster which can allow it to become too loose while moving around. In an accident, Abby will have too much movement and can cause serious injuries because everything is too loose. If the speed of the vehicle is too great and Abby's belt is too loose she can be flung out of the belt in a head-on collision. Training is KEY in any seat belt situation whether it be for a dog or a child. We have a new dog and I started shopping for a seatbelt harness, and so far with how all are made giving too much slack has me very concerned. I"ll continue the video but very alarmed that even the child is not buckled correctly.
    Training and Advocacy !!!
