40 YEARS ago (I was working at Alarmex) and met an engineer on that pier who wanted advice to add a couple cameras underneath to keep an eye on the place to watch for deterioration. I remember he told me way back then that he didn't expect it to remain 10 more years without substantial shoring up. I suspect there was probably a lot of work done to it throughout the years. Thank God no one was killed in this event.

It wouldn't have done anything. A city too lazy to annually survey & repair a structure subject to continuous marine stresses is also too lazy to note anything beyond the camera/monitor working in between coffee breaks.

...you wouldn't be saying they don't care would you ???? You can bet it was insured, they didn't want to go to the expense of demolition/repair so they let the ocean do what it does. I hope they get pinned to the expenses for cleaning that mess up and the damage it does to other structures. City tax payers will be footing the bill - you watch.

It reminds me of the way other people like my relatives make me believe about my life exclusively. Why do I have to develop an inferiority complex to my parents Bonnie and Terry Tipton, as well as my sister Shawn Noone, her husband and sons? I feel like I am in a psychological torture chamber of failure, and everyone else has succeeded. It is too much to take. I just want to go away and never see these people again. I live in Massachusetts and 10 years ago I when I visited my uncle, who lived in the Santa Cruz area, he took me to eat at the Dolphin Restaurant on the pier, right in the section that collapsed. My uncle passed away last year. Two months ago, his wife posted on Facebook lamenting that the Dolphin had closed. It was a favorite restaurant of theirs. After the collapse of the pier and news videos showing the Dolphin washing away to sea, she said that my uncle would have been heartbroken at this.

Anyway, right on bud, nice to hear the story evoked memories of the times you were still able spend w/your uncle during your visit from back East. On your 3rd trip out here(assuming you enjoyed the first two!), since you've already experienced the Monterey Bay Peninsula & all it has to offer, you might want to consider checking out life a bit farther North. Not just because I live here(born/raised) & am extremely biased or anything, but If you dig fresh-off-the-boat seafood(Dungeness crab, scallops, mussels, oysters, Salmon. Halibut, etc.) & hiking thru some of the largest redwood trees in the world...consider the Fort Bragg coastal area or really anywhere along the route on Hwy. 1 from North of the Golden Gate all the way up to(& through) the Oregon coast. It's easily, hands-down, THE most scenic ride you'll ever take in your life & I hope you get to experience it at least once!

The big question in my mind is why does it seem I am trapped in a situation in which I have to develop an inferiority complex to my parents Bonnie and Terry Tipton, and other relatives. It is constant psychological torture. I believe Terry Tipton has had a condescending attitude for decades. He makes condescending comments while watching television, anyone who does not have the same political viewpoints as him, and anyone in the NBA and NFL. He just talks like none are up to his intellect and standard of judgement. So, I do not actually like being around him. I do not recall ever having admitted to making a mistake. And he has generally had the same attitude towards me, I just heard him tell his wife, my mother, to make him a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I would describe Terry Tipton as a Democrat who has disdain for Republicans. And he thinks one purpose of a wife is to serve him. My experience with women in my life, those who I worked with and went to college with would tell their boyfriend or husband "to go "f--k' yourself if their boyfriend or husband ever told them to do that. I guess my mother has needed a husband who is also a boss.

As they said at the beginning, the Ventura Pier and the other local piers to it were closed. Why that wasn't done for Santa Cruz wharf, I don't know, I thought it was standard procedure for high surf days, never mind one that was actively being repaired and badly in need of it. That it got damaged isn't unusual, that's what happens with piers and wharfs absent a very rigorous maintenance schedule like Stearns Wharf in Santa Barbara. Ventura Pier has probably been damaged 3 or 4 times since 1998.

It’s amazing the whole thing didn’t go. I’ll bet it did sound like trees cranking in a thunderstorm. The pilings don’t last forever. How old is the pier? If they are embedded into the ground far enough they’ll last longer. Sometimes the things start rotting with no apparent evidence above the water line. I’ll bet they are all unstable.

Venice stands on hundreds of thousands of wooden piles, though that's changing as modern repairs are made. The city was founded after Rome fell and concrete went into disuse. Your larger point stands, but I thought you should know.

@ The reason I brought it up, I was in a book store perhaps 30+ years ago. Looking at ancient.construction methods, and it was on Ancient Rome. So the gentleman next to me, announced he was a Structural Engineer and had traveled all over the world. He told me that the ancient Romans would use slaves to carry concrete in baskets to the bottom of the seafloor to build cassions. This is the only reason I brought it up. Perhaps in the continued retrofitting in Venice, they went to Wood piles.? Thank you for your comment!

This wharf not being fixed is ENTIRELY the fault of local activists. From Wikipedia: "On December 23, 2024, an approximately 150-foot (46 m) section at the end of the wharf collapsed due to high waves. The wharf had accumulated a backlog of necessary repairs prior to the collapse, but engineers were unable to implement the repairs due to CEQA lawsuits by local NIMBY activists."

PEOPLE!!! If you are ever filming something like this, do not stop and run away. You will be protected. The cameraman never dies. Have you not noticed? It saddens me in this day and age when some really great footage was missed due to people selfishly running for their lives, when they could be providing entertainment to dozens if not hundreds of viewers.
Just keep filming. And if you do decide to run and then submit weak footage to the local station, as the cameraman did here, be sure they make it clear that the footage missed the important part.
