Chris Cornell's sad songs always made me feel better when I was depressed. My thought was that if he could make such beauty from his sadness, maybe there was still hope for good in my own. Thank you for choosing this song. I love it, and everything from the Euphoria Morning album.

Chris has defended "depressing' and 'angry' music a few times against naysayers in interviews who believed that it made people feel the same way.
He would always respond that it's important to write that kind music, so people who are struggling with those negative feelings know that there is someone else out there going through the same struggle, and that they aren't alone.

I feel what you’re saying. It took me a couple years too. And some of it is really far more poignant than it even was initially in terms of lyrics. I never kidded myself that Chris was over his depression I just didn’t expect that kind of end for him. 100% most of his work is completely
Overlooked even by fans. He was a fantastic singer as we all know, but was an absolute songwriting machine! Easily top 10 songwriter all time. Period!
Even when he made it big he never stopped writing real, true to the heart music like so many others do. It wasn't in him to sit back and pump out mediocre half hearted albums. That's because he was the REAL DEAL!

I saw him in Montreal at the Olympia or Saint-Denis Theater, I think it was in 2009. Solo performance with bits of "unplugged" versions of SoundGarden songs. I was just blown away. He was on a "sharp" state of mind and shredded for 2 hours and a half. One of the best live shows of my 56 years old life.

I never really saw a bad performance - until the last one. He lived so much for music. He was music. I think if anything he just pushed it too hard to be all things for all people. To reform and tour with Soundgarden, to be working on touring Higher Truth and working on the next project, and soundtrack projects, and charity work - As someone who suffers from depression - and of course without anywhere near those demands, it is heartwrenching that he forgot to take the time to help himself. And he was a loving father ahd husband and spent a lot of time away during the last few years. Depression creeps up on those of us who are vulnerable to it. And it truly does take over.

I think it has to do with marketing and circumstance. Euphoria Mourning was difficult to pin down as a genre, it's a bit slow and cerebral for most rock stations, and pop only cared about boy bands and underaged underclothes girls.
I also think the singles were poorly picked, they played it too safe with poppier songs that didn't showcase Chris' vocals well. 'Pillow of Your Bones' was hard enough for rock and it has an immediate hook with the opening riff.
I think, if he released Higher Truth as a country record he'd have killed it! and pump some real music into the trash heap in the process.

Euphoria Morning is one of the best and worst albums to listen to when you're having a hard time. An overlooked gem by the general listeners at the time. Even Soundgarden fans largely ignored it.
Btw I hope I never have to listen to it on repeat compulsively. Just once in a while.

I'm so happy to see this. I always had a thing for this album. It's an absolute masterpiece. This performance cuts like a knife, and I try to share it with anyone I can. He was an incredible vocalist, and past his prime here. It makes it even more impressive. Edit: I've had some of the most fun on guitar learning this record. A beautiful mix of blues, jazz, prog, and classic rock. I learned chords I didn't know, and I've been playing for over 20 years.

i think Chris cornell is the king of distortion, well done i mean
there will NEVER be another one not like him ive never heard a voice like his, EVER, I wish you will listen to Him in his younger years i really hope you do, he smoked heavily and had a problem with drinking and thats another reason to be at awe of what he can do even though smoking and drinking destroys your vocal cords but he had such good ones that he still sounded good in his later years
but try and listen to entire Temple of the Dog album and entire Euphoria morning" album
and if you really want to see what His voice did try and listen to entire soundgarden Badmotorfinger" album entire ultramega ok" album
and entire first album "screaming life" and "Fopp"albums
and it will blow your mind forever

One of the all time greats for sure, that Chris Cornell. As always with these recordings of the musicians, singers and actors who've passed on, I'm reminded how thankful I am to live in an era where we have the technology to preserve these performances. I can't even imagine how many talented performers we'll never know, as they have simply been lost to history.

Chris Cornell has an absolutely MASSIVE catalogue of work (including TOTD, Soundgarden, and Audioslave) you could probably react to just his videos for a year lol.
A lot of it goes unheard even by fans. If you enjoyed this performance of 'When I'm Down' check out the album it's off of 'Euphoria Mourning'. 'Higher Truth' is great as well, a bit more folky.
A deep dive into his works include a personal favorite 'Ferry Boat #3' a recently released on the 'Singles Soundtrack (25th Anniversary Edition)'. Album also includes the haunting 'Nowhere but You'.
'Temple of the Dog' is a must listen monster of an album. Chris' vocals in particular are absolutely insane!
There's so much more to explore. Spend a little time and effort searching for gold and you'll find a nugget, or two.
    Happy hunting!

Chris did not lose control of his voice as he reached 2017. You are incorrect. He has always been hit or miss in live shows. The older he got the more wear was on that voice. Touring with SG like touring with AS 14 years earlier put a huge toll on that voice. The SG songs were written and sung by a twenty to low thirty something . I think the mistake he made was using his voice too much and trying to compete with that younger self. His last show in detroit, he was on something. I am unsure if he took it or was drugged but it was obvious.

Thankyou Beth. My favourite song. So many people react on the wrong songs. Thankyou for finally doing one of the greatest songs. I know every artist is unique, but Chris was at another level. Soundgarden, temple of the dog, Audioslave, solo. How many other contemporary artists of his time did any this. keidis, Layne , Kurt, Scott weiland, Billie corgan, hetfield, Billie Joe, vedder. No one even comes close. So please guys don't even bother making a comparison because no one is even slightly close.
Actually now that I think if it I can name one and if you don't know him look him up. Daniel Johns. His solo work and Silverchair. Yeh, he is worthy of placing alongside Chris. A musical genius in a different way.

I don t really know why after audioslave era, when he regained his vocal range , sometimes Chris voice sounded so healthy and more clean and others a little struggle and to much raspy... but in similar or same ages. Im no sure if he wanted to sing like that or his voice was more tired or he was more on drugs and drunk. Anyway he sounded fuck*ng amazing

Because in this youth he put this vocal cords to the test with all the high notes and screaming he did. No singers survive that. Its a testament to how truly strong his voice was to have still sounded great as he got older. Many young rock stars fall to the side because they damage their vocal cords . Chris was one of a kind

Great reaction. Chris Cornell had throat surgery in 2000, a year before he started with Audioslave, and while it never took away his brilliance or soul, he had different vocal character to his early days in Soundgarden.

    • @alext2566

He's had a few occasions in his career where he's has to scale back amount of weight and distortion. It would seem his voice was shot, then a few years later he's back!
The most dramatic change was between the "Carry On"(2007) period where he essentially had no access to the 5th octave except for falsetto,
And "Songbook"(2011) where he's hitting those big powerful E5s in "Call Me Dog" like nobody's business!

    • @jean-lucpicard2914
      @jean-lucpicard2914 3 роки тому +2

There's some kind of "Dallas Observer" parody article from 2000 about him having his vocal cords surgically replaced with cats having sex and a car alarm but I've never seen anything in all my years supporting him ever having had surgery. In 94 SG had to cancel shows because he needed a break but that's all it was, a break.
He was also touring for Euphoria Morning in 1999 and 2000 and he was more consistent than how he was during SG's last few years (in the 90s).
He also basically sounded the same on Audioslaves first record barring his choice to really embrace more distortion and chest voice, which subsequently had a toll on how he sounded for their remaining tours and records.

    • @alext2566
      @alext2566 3 роки тому +1

@@jean-lucpicard2914 I believe I read something similar a while back.
I think he was just really good at relearning his instrument, and figuring out what he can and can't do with it.
Must've been a lot of work, but he always seemed to be making music so maybe he didn't see it that way.
