ive been trying to play this song sober and it is impossible. a person has to be high as a kite to really dig into this song.

I'm glad that I forced myself to learn to fret with my thumb years back just like Hendrix did. I still predominantly use barre chords the standard way but having the ability to fret chords with your thumb is INCREDIBLY POWERFUL. It allows you to free up one, two or maybe 3 of your digits for embellishments or licks without having the bass string become muted.
Any beginners should try to learn as much different styles as possible, even if you don't see how it would help you in your style, learn it anyways and I promise you'll discover a way to incorporate it into your playing.

      Good advice Bilb Ono.
I never bothered to learn the G chord with pinky, middle and ring. Every once in a while I find I need it in a fast progression. I've gradually gotten so I can play it on a guitar with a narrow neck, at least.

I've watched multiple tutorials for a massive amount of songs I love...and you 1) always have the song I'm looking for 2) make it easy for beginners to understand, and 3) sound a lot better than anyone else. I never learn a new tune anymore without first checking out Marty. If he has a lesson on it, his take is always a great stepping off point. Then I like to learn the bass line and look for other versions if they’re out there. Yeah I forget shit if I haven’t played it in a few months, but I can always come back here for a refresher.

Great lesson Marty! Wish you were around forty-five years ago when I was fumbling away at 13 years of age with an old Hendrix Vinyl LP, [ I believe it was "Electric Lady Land" ] repeatedly lifting and replacing the turntable's needle, over and over, as I tried my best to decipher this classic tune on my old El Degas Les Paul copy - Again, a great lesson to be sure!!! - now, at almost sixty years of age, I can finally play "Voodoo Child" in its entirety with a touch of authority to boot!!! Cheers Mate!

I liken the latter part of this sounding like two wild animals having a fight! It's a truly amazing noise he gets out of that guitar. There's also a part where, just after he sings "I just wanna say one last thing", I think, where there is three great muted slides. Those sound absolutely awesome and I would love to copy that sound.....if only I had one clue as to how he did it. Hendrix did a lot of slides on the thick strings. He was the king of the slides. He could just about make a guitar talk, which he almost did on the track Rainy Day, Dream Away from Electric Ladyland. 54 years after this song was brought out, it is without doubt still one of the heaviest songs I have ever heard. 😎🎸🎸
