Thanks to feinstein1 for suggesting this.
The lead guitar on the record sounds like it's played on electric (probably telecaster) and accoustic guitars, but the credits say Marr only did "electric guitar". So did Billy Bragg play the accoustic track? It seems about ten times as complicated as the stuff he normally plays and is very much in Johnny's style. Anyway, it's quite hard to hear but I've played what I imagine it to be and made it more prominent in the mix.
For better sound quality (I think UA-cam videos are all mono, for starters), get my podcast.
Sounds like a Johnny Marr riff. Beautiful.
good ear, mate. johnny played the lead guitar on the recording of this. it's not as easy to hear on the recording as this, but as good as anything he did in the smiths, i think.
robert mcfall
on the billy brag recording, i meant. not this cover, which is wonderful in itself.
robert mcfall
I had no idea. I just looked it up and you're absolutely correct. And you're right, I never noticed it in the Billy Bragg recording but here, it's as plain as day. Thanks for the heads up.
Wesley Goo
no problem, man. always thought it was really cool.
+Wesley Goo I loved this lovely song from Billy Brag and that riff is so nicely done...so familiar signature riff from Johnny Marr...
Thank you Danny Earwicker for all your vids over the years, they have brought joy and helped me nail some tunes I never could’ve on my own.
Still love your version 14 yrs on, wonderful
Hey Daniel,
Great work on this one. I bet you could make some money on the 12-string tab you play here... Any chance on posting it? I'm sure others would love it too!
Pure awesomeness!
that is beautiful. Much more beautiful that the song, which I love.
Great, but I think you shortened it.
So well played...one of my favourite songs of all time.
I do love this arrangement - this is the video that I go to when I need to cheer up, or chill out.
Has so much depth to it - awesome job!
Does Nashville make your strings really bendy and loose? I bought some 12 string sets and really dont wanna take my 10 gauge off if its gonna be like playing a hardcore metal guitar, oh by 12 I mean 12 accompanying strings
You might want to try a Burns double six - it has a really wide fretboard (50mm - the Ric played here has a wider fretboard than every other Ric, 44mm all the others are 41mm). The Burns guitar obviously doesn't come close in terms of sound but then it's a fraction of the price! Danelectro also do a budget priced 12-string with a wide fretboard.
Ah yes, but Johny Marr played lead guitar on this particular song released on "Talking with the taxman about poetry" . (They worked togther for the same label along with Kirsty MacColl who died in a boating accident a few years back.) (sad)So occasionally you hear Marr's guitar or Kirsty's backup vocals.
Very easy: Take an Ohm-Meter (multimeter) instead of the amplifier, turn all pots on the guitar full on. Then first switch to the bridge pickup and look how much Ohm, then to the neck pickup and look, or vica versa. Not both pickups.
oh yes, your 660/12 sounds very bvery good moreover being a beautifull fireglo piece of wood
Super! And that's how a RIC should be played. Very nice melody and mix. Hats off!
This is brilliant. Great post.
Marr was invincible. But how did you manage to extract that Marr guitar line from the recording?
I wish Marr's line was up in the original mix. Do you reckon it was a contractual mix down?
Hi Daniel, what a superb sound. I have just bought a 660-12. I hope it sounds like yours. What make and guage of strings are you using? Also I see you are using a capo, have you tuned it to Eflat? regards Brian.
I think Nashville tuning is also called "Nashville Hgih Strung" and it's a guitar tuned one octave above what it should be. When I saw Dan Fogelberg a few years ago he edicated all of us one that little tidbit of knowledge!
Hi Daniel. Sounds fantastic! Does Your RIC 660/12 uses the 7,4 kOhm or 12 kOhm Toasters? In my ears sounds like the brighter 7,4 kOhms.
Best Regards
that Rick sounds deadly. I'd love to have one but I don't have the right hands. Johnny himself told me that you have to have smaller hands to play Ricks.
Ive just ordered my rickenbacker 660/12, arrives next week, if it sounds anything like yours, I'm well pleased, cos that sounded brill. Thanks!
Hi Daniel, would it be possible for you to give me an answer to my question about the guage of strings that you use. Regards Brian.
Great sound, both the acoustic and the Ric. What acoustic is that? It looks so beautiful.
Great piece of work. Fantastic sound. By the way, what exactly is Nashville tuning? Everyone I've asked has a different answer.
Your 660/12 string is better than Sex! What a beautiful sound, you can't any better than a Rickenbacker.
OK..somethings wrong here! both my comments below were in response to the post by monosound81 below.
is it possible to post a guitar lesson of this?
would be great!
very good cover ! 5*!
please please please could I have a tab for this? Been trying to learn it for ages!
A lot of BRAGGing in your video but it's very good anyway
Sorry, the above comment was in response to the post by monosound81 below
god thats good sure you must be a studio man complete ly got it right
fantastic Braggs masterpiece or should i say Marrsterpiece
Johnny Marr did the lead guitar !
mate what string gauges do you use for nashville tuning?
Nice work, sounds complex.
Hey what a fucken great sound!
Wow! Thanks for taking up the challenge.
10 people are stone deaf!
this is awesome
your guitar is sweet
Hey well played!
Should be HIGH and EDUCATED. Sorry.
Love this song and the cover-well done!
Fucking spectacular job with this song! Marr's beautiful work is set so far back in the mix, it's great to hear you play it up front. Thank you all your uploads. I've enjoyed and learned a lot from so many of them.
Yes, Johnny Marr is practically unheard in the record. It’s drowned out by Billy Bragg’s acoustic guitar.
At this time Marr was off the charts.
WOW. F'n awesome. Thank you.
this is absolutely superb!!!!
Sounds great! You must be a big fan of John Porter, I noticed you do quite a few numbers that he produced (and played on as well).
Like your guitar collection too (you must be wealthy).
Nice acoustic version
Heard this a couple of days ago (daniel's version) and then downloaded the original which is not a patch on this. What a lovey tune.
what an awesome recording job, and the playing was just as awesome. not to mention BB for the song, love him.
TDM
Thanks a lot. So great. I´ll throw my guitar out of the window n o w. ;)
fantastic!!
@braddersthemod daniel earwickr doesn't do tabs. if anything he wants all of us to learn through experiences and with our ears :D
Really cool guitar work man.I've tried and failed for years to achieve this. The Rik, what year, where from? I play a 330 and it doesn't compare.
Excellent playing, love the 2nd guitar part.
Any idea where i might find the tab for this? If not i guess i'll just have to learn the hard way from your video!
Brilliant work, well done.
Regards Ricky.
well played
Absolutely gorgeous version of a lovely song. I'll be checking The Primrose League! Thanks very much indeed - enchanting playing (and a nice guitar too!)
All the best from sarf London
Great work. Beautifully done. Inspired me to learn it too. Thank you 🙏🏻.
nice sound
Brilliant. I watched through all your videos quite a while ago and was totally impressed with your style of playing, you share my taste in guitars, artists, and beautiful jangly sounds. Pleased to stumble across this :)
Nice Job; getting me a 381/12v69 in Fireglo very soon!
NIce!
That was fantastic. It sounds so glorious and soothing.. its so nice to hear the guitars up front, loud and digitized for us to bask in. Excellent stuff Daniel. Whats next, Electronic or The The Marr stuff? ;-D
Great sound, great job. Didnt realise how good the guitar lines were in this song. I love the chords at :53
That Rickenbacker 660 sounds damned wonderful. It's the toaster pickups. A beautiful little guitar. Lovely playing too!
Johnny marr ???
I was waiting for Johhny marr to appear there! Classic tune man! As the yanks would say "good job"
Such a pretty rendition. Such a beautiful tone. Thank you..
Good job! I revisit this cover from time to time. Like it better than BBs. Never gets old.
Spot on! Well done you; great fret-work and transitions.
Nice! Another classic JM guitar piece. Your 660 sounding sweet too. More!!
the complexities of marr's crafts are so comforting and accessible, it's unbelieveable.
This sounds damn awesome and you got some nice guitars, dude!
Excellent! Just Beautiful, Ric-12 string...
Very well played! Great sound, too! It was only recently that I discovered that Johnny Marr is my favorite guitarist. Just recently discovered that he played one of my other favorite lead lines on the Talking Heads song, Nothing but Flowers. Great stuff!
Yea, and it doesn't get old.
See Big Star also. While your at it the Jayhawks and Golden Smog. My go-to til the end.
