This land is your land, This land is my land, From the coast of Cornwall, To the Scottish Highlands. From the sacred forests, To the holy islands, This land was made for you and me. As I walked out through The homeless counties, The traffic raging, Raging all around me. I closed my eyes and, Dreamed how it could be, This land was made for you and me. So I am going, No one can stop me, Where the wild flowers growing, Clean rivers flowing. Fresh winds are blowing, And the tall trees whispering, This land was made for you and me. I saw a sign there, When I was walking, And on the sign it, Said "No Trespassing". But on the other side, It didn't say nothing, This side was made for you and me. As the clouds went rolling, And the church bells ringing, I heard the songs that, The birds were singing. As night came falling, They went on calling, This land was made for you and me. From the teaming city, I made my escape, To find my place in, The mystic landscape. I'm not the first here, Nor am I the last here, This land was made for you and me.
Chorus: This land is your land This land is my land From the coast of Cornwall To the Scottish Highlands From the sacred forests To the holy islands This land was made for you and me As I walked out through The homeless counties The traffic raging Raging all around me I closed my eyes and Dreamed how it could be This land was made for you and me (Chorus) So I am going No one can stop me Where the wild flowers growing Clean rivers flowing Fresh winds are blowing And the tall trees whispering This land was made for you and me (Chorus) I saw a sign there When I was walking And on the sign it Said "No Trespassing" But on the other side It didn't say nothing This side was made for you and me (Chorus) As the clouds went rolling And the church bells ringing I heard the songs that The birds were singing As night came falling They went on calling This land was made for you and me (Chorus) From the teaming city I made my escape To find my place in The mystic landscape I'm not the first here Nor am I the last here This land was made for you and me (Chorus) X3 then fade

This recording first appeared on www.discogs.com/Various-The-Disagreement-Of-The-People/release/2451757 (where The Heathens were also credited), and next on the 2006 UK, US & Aus re-releases (where it appears they shamefully and mysteriously weren't.) 3. Surely it's possible to have a number of different political/cultural identities (regardless of whether one is, in the UK case, a Unionist or a Welsh/Scottish/Cornish/English nationalist/separatist) that take in ethical universalism (and internationalism) at the same time as celebrating love of country region, culture, terroir, and so on? I admit it's a political tension - perhaps one of the defining tensions of the "anti-globalisation" movement - but need it be?
@@DaL33T5 0.++ totally agree - I never understand why the US would want to keep Star Spangled Banner - a song based on a poem about war - as their national anthem when they have songs like this (original) celebrating the country. Warmongering vs pride in the land......

I been studying Guthrie for the last few days, then I just stumbled upon this gem. Way I see it you gotta drill for the songwriter’s spirit of their meaning. Lots of folks going off on tangents of politics, Bragg surely knew this would happen and he so he walks a thin line with his lyrics. The lyrics strongly refence the original, but he rewrites it for his own style and for our modern ears (‘private property’ instead of ‘no trespassing’). He puts reference to ‘church bells’ in there, and in the last verse he uses the word ‘mystic’. This is a deliberate pointer for us all not to jump to an immediate political hearing of the song, but rather a mystical one. (There are as many and much more ‘church bells’ type mystics as the pagan flavour - think of the bishop of Lindisfarne, St Cuthbert, referenced right at the top of the song). Great, great song 🙏❤️
