Never let perfection be the enemy of good. As a homeowner you have to think, "Yeah I know the flaws... can any random person other than me tell?" No? Then it's a GOOD JOB.
I struggled with perfection all my life and it caused me lots of stress, now I go with good, life's too short to be picky 🙄
@@cmgill2gill135i feel ya. I shoot for somewhere in between acceptable and amazing😂.
Glad you shared this and mentioned it was your house. Weird how we have this knowledge to repair things but are slow when it comes to doing our house. I've had sheetrock and a bathroom Reno I've been putting off for 7 years or so
“Have to settle with a whole lot better than what was there in the first place.” Sounds like my entire house. Thanks for advancing my knowledge on working with joint compound. You really are the best suspiciously drywally carpenter on UA-cam.
I've used waxed dental floss down in between tight places like this. It often stays put while painting, and it pulls off with a knife-edge line, and the tape then comes off effortlessly with no issues with the painted surface. You can use the floss several times. It's an extra step, but the result is solid.
Ben, this is Ben here in New Hampshire, USA. Thank you so much for posting this helpful video. I watched it when you first posted it, and then watched it again this morning before heading off to a job where I'm going to use these very helpful tips. Thank you soooooooo much!
This worked for this novice painter! Thank you!!
I'm so glad you showed us the mistake where you glued the tape to the wall cause I was doing that too and didn't know it wasn't kosher!
I have used the same technique for several years. But I use packing tape and here’s why. I found that masking tape did not have the flexibility needed for tucking. Plus it tended to stick to the carpet and would also tear (at times) when pulling it off. The sticking problem might be resolved with frog tape but that’s an expensive alternative. I tried packing tape and and all the issues went away. But I am happy to say that I’m building a new house and it will have LVP throughout (except for a set of stairs leading to a FROG and the FROG itself) so this technique will only be needed on a small scale. Thanks for sharing the technique.
Frog tape - that blue stuff - is not at all expensive on Amazon. I got 3 rolls of it for £5 for my painting project.
@@_-.Victoria.-_ That is not frog tape, that is regular painters tape you are describing. FrogTape is green (and orange) and is more expensive.
Taping and painting around carpet on stairs or on baseboards is always a challenge. Thanks for sharing your technique.
I've been going through your drywall videos while I've been putting up stuff in the basement, I don't know why you don't have more subscribers.
You're a life saver!! Painting my stairwell tomorrow and was unsure of how to get that close to the carpet without it getting all mangled!
I'm glad :) I hope it goes well!
Just been decorating the dinning room which takes in the carpeted stairs; finding this video was perfect timing. 👍
As usual another great video. I watched the one you did on caulking around baseboards. I tried it and it worked great. Also used the same method around the tiling in my kitchen, again it worked great. No mess to clean up. Thank you and keep them coming.
And to answer all of this you’re among family thank you for sharing your faults and you’re bragging rights
Many thanks for this, you've saved me a bunch of stress, all the best!
Painting stairs, so I can be wrong on multiple levels.
This will be helpful soon.
Get you a Pivot Tool, it's a ramp basically, and it will lay on 2 steps above and sit on the steps below and you will be Level even room to use an extension ladder on it. I call them ladder buddies
@@SeemsFutileNow how did you know he was talking g about that
Thanks boss, I’m putting up these videos I’ve been working on my bathroom and you’ve been taking the mystery out of taping and spackling thanks
Another great video. I watch your videos after watching videos by Saskatchewan Plumber and Hamilton Handyman (not sure those two exist).
You did it right. If there's baseboards involved just tuck the tape and carpet under the baseboards. Cut in Carefully and Smoothly tho
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Bottom line, a good job takes lots of steps. And patience. 😁 I appreciate the oops, ok this is how to address.
Damn! Exactly what i was looking for!
I found that cheap duct tape works better as it is not too aggressive in stickiness and it tends to round the edge of the carpet so that you don't get a ridge line higher up... if anything it is down further and will be covered once you pull the tape off as the carpet pile returns to normal height. Just my two cents, hope it's worth it to someone. Otherwise great work as usual Vancouver Carpenter/ Drywaller/Painter... walls are looking sharp!
Thank you sharing your professional skills and techniques. 🇦🇺
This technique is probably adaptable for baseboard/carpet borders, too. I'll try this for my baseboard repainting task.
“How to pull the tape off 🙄”
🤣 laughed at that great video
Thank you for this.
Very helpful
Excellent video, lots of great tips, I recommend the blue tape, better quality than green, doesn't bleed at the edges as much. 2 coats of primer on new drywall is my " trade secret ", with 2 coats of paint you have a very high end finish, if the job warrants it.
That’s not necessarily true. Most of the blue tape is junk, try frog tape delicate surface(yellow).
@@ryane6719 blue tape has been fine for me. Must be the way your applying it
@@ryane6719 Just finished 180 units done to level 5 drywall finish and only thing painters used was blue, and the final paint finish was very high quality. I have found a significant differenc between green and blue for my own small projects in the masking portion of the job.
Ahhh, Vancouver Painting!!!
do more videos weekly ben , your a life saver
Come on man six years before you decided to it really shows how we all do for everyone but our self
You’re saving me. 🎉❤😊
Great video!
great tips mate, cheers
I use a 6' putty knife and a paint brush. I can cut those stairs quicker than you can put the tape on.
Very useful tips!! Thank you!
When a trusted pro seems to have problems with it, you know it can’t go well for us peons!
He can paint but his skill is Drywall not Painting. This isn't hard.
yeh, just shield your carpet with a putty knife and have a wet rag to wipe it before each stroke. might be different if you are masking for drywall mud, i don't know about that.
Kind of lost it at “Glory Shot” ...lol and thought the channel might be taking a new direction.. but a great video as always. Thanks Ben!
Recently had a 'professional' painter tell me this couldn't be done. We had new carpet installed but couldn't get the painting on the stair skirt done beforehand. It was an insurance claim and we had to go with their installer's schedule. I showed him the entire staircase I did upstairs with stain and painted spindles over carpet and he said nothing, lol.
The Feather Master
I also use wax paper and tuck it in with a plastic putty knife. Then the adhesive from the tape does not pull the carpet fibres.
Hi Roman. I experimented with some blue tape I had here, pushing it down with my scraper. It makes a nice neat line, way better than just fingers. So I should then do a layer of the wax paper, also tucking it down ? When you say wax paper, do you have a link ? Is it that stuff people use for baking ? ("Baking parchment") Thanks
@@_-.Victoria.-_ No, regular waxed paper like used for wrapping sandwiches. It was all we had before Saran Wrap. Sold in the same section in the supermarket.
Great job, you rock!! Thanks!!
Nice video, learned a lot
Love your videos thanks heaps
That’s how I’ve been doing it for years. Always pull the tape before paint dries.
Faster, easier, and better to just pull the carpet ~ it's usually only stapled so it comes up easy and reinstalls fast.
Skirting would make it look so much nicer. Then we would have a video about how to measure and install stair skirting which would be really handy...
Someone thing that I’ve learned when taping off and painting is that you remove the tape before the paint dries and in fact, most tape I have bought says to do this instead of leaving the tape on in between coats. Of course, then you have to reapply tape in between coats but then you’ll have beautiful lines every time.
Do not remove tape on this sort of work you will surly make a mess you can’t fix painter giving you a painting tip 👍🏼
During the coats let it dry and top coat let it dry before removing tape
Thanks Ben
Thanks. Couple of Q's (1) Given the issue you had with the tape sticking to the wall, and given how it's going to be pretty impossible never to touch the tape with paint, would you advise using that wide metal tool FOR THE FIRST COAT, along with the tape, and not just for any required touch ups ? (2) I'm painting base boards up the stairs with water based paint. Do I do the 2 coats and let it all dry before lifting the tape ? Cheers !
in addition, if you do get paint on the carpet, you can tuck down against the wall. But you'all probably already knew that one ;)
Do a Peterka Grind.
Maybe it's better if you installed some cheap trim so you can easily paint and it'll also give you a cleaner look
I dont know if you've been asked, but what's your take on Jeff Thorman/homerenovision.diy? (A fellow Canadian)?
Good advice. And I’d add always try and remove the tape when the paint is still wet.
Sound advice. I always take the extra effort to peel and then re-tape between coats of paint. Kind of a PITA, but letting the paint dry on the tape almost always results in problems when you start peeling.
Do that at the edge of carpet and you will ended up with carpet fibers that have paint on them. And it would be impossible anyway if you are doing two coats.
Carpeted stairs.
looks very sharp nice job but where is the skirting board >? you should have skirting board on crappy dry wall! :)
Vancouver Carpeter
hi when you pull edge of carpet back to paint at about 5.00 minutes on video. Well I'd like to know what the tool is called that you use to do this. Have been to 2 diffrent painting and decorating suppliers not stocked in either. And showed video and no one knows what its called. Is this video under copy right I could get prosecuted for showing in public HA HA.
What color is that? looks pretty cool
So now I'm watching this video and learning...but I replaced all of the carpeted stairs in my house with wood stairs some time ago, so....
Its easier to tape carpet going down the stairs versus up the stairs. just my 2 cents worth.
Can you come to my house and texture the ceiling!!!! I trust you over any other contractor.
Moral of the video. Don’t go with the cheapest carpet!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
If you're a professional, you don't have to tape your carpet because you use a guard awesome
Don't paint corners with straight brushes, always use an angle brush.
Now you just need to install a safety rail.
What are you 90
@@derekd1203 Haha that's good but in Canada that is definitely a code requirement for stairs more than 3 steps high.
Im ok being third, now get out and skate!
This video was randomly recommended to me.
We don't have stairs at our home.

Get quality tape and you wont have to work extra =] nice work tho
that looks like menards masking tape. ugh i hate that tape lol
What is that attachment called to attach the vacuum to the sander?! I need!
A vacuum sander? You kind of just answered your own question.
Richard makes them. HD sells them.
Dang 2nd
First 🎊🎊🎊
It'll hold up fine as long as you are careful when your wife lets you vacuum them.
I started with Stodoys plans.
Just use your 10" knife as a paint edger. Tape is almost never a good idea.
Hey baby
