  • Part 2 of a 3 part video tutorial series showing how to strip a painted staircase back to it's original wood finish. In Part 2, I show how to use metal pan scrubbers, scrappers and a Dremel Multi Tool as an effective way to remove paint without damaging the decorative finish of the staircase.

    You've come a long way but so much more time needed till you get rid of all of that paint. Looking great. Excellent advice on the use of a heat gun.

    I am honestly shocked at how much paint was left over after the stripper had been used multiple times. For the most part it should have taken it to nearly bare wood. I get wanting to be environmentally friendly, but you also don't want to spend money on ineffective product either. There was a product I saw the other day that might be useful. Its an infrared heater that you use with pure linseed oil. Effecrive and doesn't scorch wood like a heat gun. Thank you for making such a detailed video!

    thanks for posting this..in the middle of this job right now and already gauged out some bits - any recommended wood filler for pine finish before I apply stain/varnish?

    I am right in the middle of this stage with my woodwork around my steps. Its so difficult around the tiny crevasses.

      get some wet and dry sandpaper (120 grit) and fold over some string (for the decorative parts of the spindles). Wet and dry sandpaper will not crack when folded and will remove the paint from these tight areas. Also, buy an Osborn sanding set for drills. They are nylon brushes that remove the paint from tight areas without damaging the wood. Search for them on ebay and Amazon

    Very useful video thanks. Can you tell me if this method works if the paint is lead based? I thought any kind of sanding, even hand sanding, was a bad idea if the paint contains lead

      @mancaveprojects4693  10 місяців тому +1

      For lead based paint I'd use a product in the UK called "Peelaway 1. Outside of the UK, I think rust oleum make a good paint stripper for lead based paint. Use a circulation fan and open windows to allow movement of air away from the area being worked on.

    Hello, I can’t find the first part! How did that stairs look like that? Is a liquid or something, that you put first time and after you left a little bit? Thank you

    I used citristrip on my railing last weekend and it turned all of the paint into rubber cement. Near impossible to get off. I’ve spent the past four days trying to salvage the railing. I only did a section of 7 spindles and a post on a large railing…

    Hiya , as a DIY beginner & single mum could you tell me the easiest , cheapest & quickest way to remove several layers of gloss from my stairs , I want to repaint as they're not quality wood so don't need to be as thorough as your tutorial. But it's really thick & lumpy so I just can't bear to paint over it 🫣 I don't have any tools & very little money so I'm wondering could I just put paint stripper , wipe it off & give what's left a light sand before applying new paint? Also which paint stripper would tou recommend please , I'm terrified of making a massive mess & also financially not able to make poor choices .

    Does the pain panther stripper danage the wood or make it problematic to apply varnish afterwards? I'm going to be using that on wooden beams. Can't use something that damages the wood in any way.

    Learning lots, but a tip, well maybe, from a novice to a pro, buy a cheap scraper from a pound shop. I bought three for £1.80 from Home Bargins, quite blunt does not dig into the wood.

      Sorry Emma, video camera was damaged by another contractor before I had time to upload the content. Debated whether to remove the 2 videos on this subject but subscribers wanted them left up.I have another job coming up where I'll be using "Peelaway 7" on ornate plaster work and if I get permission from the home owner, I'll video the last part of the process (which is basically what's missing here).

      Camera destroyed on that job with the footage of the final prep and painting. Took the 2 videos down as a result but asked by a few subscribers to put them back up again. If it was up to me, I'd have left them down. Sorry for the incomplete set. For the record, I've since started using another product - Peelaway 7 and got quicker results.
