How to Paint the Skirting Board Rather than the Carpet!

- Painting the skirting board where there is carpet can be one of the more trickier painting jobs with the inherent, embarrassing risk of getting paint on the carpet for all to see. In this video I show you how I mask off the carpet before painting using the cheapest materials and best technique I have found to work over the years.
Equipment used in this video:
Packing tape: amzn.to/3o40S6K
Filler knife: amzn.to/3n4KvFI - Навчання та стиль
This guy is great love his dry humour
Good idea with the packing tape.
My decorator friend says the reason for using masking tape, is that it has a paper finish, and gloss paints dry into it quickly. Packing tape/sellotape etc, has a shiny finish, therefore gloss paints will take an age to dry on it.
When it comes to removing the tape, he says its easier to remove, without dragging semi dry gloss across painted skirting boards, and peoples carpets.
INTERESTING AND VERY UNDERSTANDABLE :)
FROM THIS VIDEO , I LEARNED A NEW TECHNIQUE FOR THE JOB :)
THANK YOU FOR SHARING :)
THANK YOU FROM ISRAEL :)
Thank you for the tip! Recently repaint and using tape so much easier than masking tape! Big thank you!!!
Brilliant! I've watches several videos and was looking for instruction on how to re-install the carpeting, thinking, I am just going to pull the carpet up to paint (planning to do the floors anyway) .. this is the best method I have seen, thank you!
Great tips and loved the humour! Those little looks at the camera 😂
Thanks mate! Trying to decorate my spare room and this tip is just what I was after.
These are fabulous videos. All of them. Thanks for going to the efforts of making them 🙏
Thanks for this video!! I didn't have one of those 'multi-tools' you use and I found a wallpaper scraper was too sharp - it cut through the tape every time, but ended up using a 5" car windscreen plastic ice scraper - worked perfectly!! Keep the videos coming
This is the best idea I have ever seen! Thanks !!x
Straight forward, simple and a Perfect video 👍
Thanks for this as I have a staircase to do and didn't want to lift the carpet. Much appreciated such a big help.
Hi Stuart. Big fan of your channel. Have been a subscriber for some time now. Look forward to every entertaining video. Have literally just copied your method here using packing/parcel tape. Best DIY hack ever. So simple. Keep up the great work. 👍🏼
Thank you mate You saved me a lot of hassle.

❤❤❤
Brilliant. Knew Stuart's channel was the place to go for finding an answer to this 👍
Great video Thankyou! Love dry humour ❤
Hi Stuart, tried your tip of using packaging tape to mask the carpet. Worked really well, no paint on carpet. Fantastic thanks very much 2:29
Works a treat thanks mate
In fact, packing tape often does a _better_ job than (cheap) masking tape, which tends to soak up a lot of the paint, and often doesn't stick to the thing you're trying to protect very well (so some of the paint gets wicked underneath). The downsides are that paint on masking tape stays wet for longer (so you need to be careful with it) and packing tape can stick _too well_ and pull old paint off the surface when you peel it at the end (but on carpet that doesn't really matter, of course).
This worked so well! Thanks heaps!!!
Never tried this but will try this weekend actually looking forward to it as my wife as agreed to do masking
Great tip & one I have used in the past.
My dad was a fanatical DIY painter. He used to strain liquid gloss paint through a pair of my mum's old stockings to make sure it had no lumps!! A tip given to him by my grandmother who was a great decorator. They must have had rubbish paint back then. It must have worked because his paint finishes were like glass. Anyhow, when I cleaned out my dad's garage prior to selling their house I found some strips of contoured white plastic about 800mm long by 30mm wide. They were in an unopened cellophane bag with a Woolworths sticker on them. Turned out they were for wedging in between the skirting & carpet to do the same job as your masking tape. Wedge in 3 or 4 of the plastic strips between the skirting & carpet, pull back the plastic strip & away you go with your brush. As you get to the end of the last plastic strip take out the first one & move it up to the front & so on. However, the plastic strips are too long to be used on a staircase so masking with tape is just about the only way to do that. Keep them coming Stuart.
Good stuff! Funny how things don't change much over the years except now we all have UA-cam and the internet to learn from. Thanks for your comments.
i gave up taping stairs. used a 10" putting knife as a guard when painting steps last go and worked like a charm
Just the advice I needed, great stuff, subscribed!
I tried your method and it worked brilliantly thank you very much top man1
This is genius, thank you so much for this!
Instructional...first class...thank you.
This is genius. Thank you!
Just what I was looking for👍🏽
Great tip, good humour 😊
Nice one! Very helpful.
Thank you that’s really helpful I was up in the night thinking how I was going to manage it
Really good guide - just what I was after. So simple once you know the trick, but always the simple things that are hardest to find out at first if you don't already know them...
Thanks
I AGREE THAT IT IS THE SITUATION MANNY TIMES !
THANK YOU FOR SHARING :)
THANK YOU FROM ISRAEL :)
Great vid, thank you 🙏
Really great, I would not have considered packing tape and it seems like a good option. That’s wider and provides better protection, and in this case, easier to snug up behind the carpet.
Thanks for this I was wondering how to do it!
Good tip will give it a try, thanks..I Used masking tape and it left a light brown residue when I pulled it off, was only on for a day or so, luckily the it came off easily.
Great tip my friend all your vids give good honest tips amazing. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
I actually can't wait to give this tip a try! Thanks

You must have the patience of a saint. I absolutely hate glossing skirting, but I will try out your method!
Todays job 😥
Thanks for this 👍🏾
Great tip.Didnt have any packing tape used duct tape.Speaking from my experience much better than masking tape. Thanks
Glad it helped
Funny, informative, soulfull and I look forward to Fridays. Great channel, great vids everytime.
Ps. The tools forgive you for the surface!
Thank you very much. Nice one! I can always rely on 'Somewhere Else' !
Class mate defo doing that next time I do my stairs!!
Thanks
Great, thanks for this!!
My pleasure!
Liking the idea with using the packing tape , I normally use masking tape but not ideal when painting with carpets in situ
I have recently painted four rooms using the packing tape technique. It has worked perfectly each time...no more paint smudges on the edges of the carpet, or bits of fluff sticking to the new paintwork. Genius!
When do you peel the packing tape of the carpet do you peel it when the paint is fully dried ?
Wait until the paint is dry. If you remove the tape too early you risk smearing the paintwork.@@kaler329
Great tip will try today 👍👍
All the best
You the man 💯❤️
Brilliant ! Thanks for a great tip!👍Subscribed
Why oh why have I not thought of this before ? The best tips are usualy common sense to some. Thanks for that, hope the wife doesnt see your channel as I've just retired. Subscribed to your channel. Right, I'm off down the pub !

Thank you : )
Did this today, rather than my usual method and it worked a treat. Thank you!
Fantastic!
Top tip. Thanks.

Definitely a top tip as I do the same thing, parcel tape works a treat
Thank you! You are the first person to confirm you use the same as me!

Thank you
I love the title.
i like your style of videos
Thank you!
Are you synced to my Mrs brain? I stumbled across your channel about the post fixed to wall..saw this tip about the tape and next minute I've spent all day glossing bedroom skirting!
Seriously good tip..looking forward to new content to learn and re affirm my skills
Thank you
Interesting. I use the same technique of tucking in but use normal masking tape (just cheap wide stuff), will give the packing tape a go next time I decorate.
Give it a go and see what you think
Awesome solution. Just previously watched an idiot suggest we free hand paint from top down. Thank you.
Niiiice 🎉🎉
NOOOICE!!!
From the photographic standpoint I was wondering how you handled shooting that. Did you have a second person on the camera? I loved that crazy picture on the wall - very funny.
Great tip mate, better than using masking tape.
Thanks
My ex never believed in masking before painting.... she also didn't believe in covering furniture or taking things like jackets off of coat hooks before painting...
So most of my carpets are stuck to the boards, and I lost 2 jackets and a computer to "accidental" drips 🤔
Do you sand before applying the tape or after?
Our cleaner has decimated the gloss paint on all our skirting boards (particularly the stairs) by being too aggressive with the Henry hoover. I have a big job ahead of me. Thanks for the tips. My question is how long can you leave the packing tape on the carpet without it leaving a sticky residue?
Just did a bedroom with paper masking tape on the carpet. Nightmare as it kept tearing when taking it off!!! Next time will definitely try packaging tape. Thanks!
Yes masking tape can be a real pain for that
Nice technique, pity I have just bought masking tape... Dooh Quick question, do you change the tape between u/c and a gloss finish?
Great advice , About to start the Hallway & Stairs .. Sick of white paint going yellow all the time . So going to change the colour scheme , to a nice shade of grey ... Was going to use masking tape after watching another video . But I think your idea of Packing tape is better ..... Thanks ..... Liked & Subbed ....
Thank you
As again mate. Prober job, never thought of that, will be using that the weekend for the stair case. Wife says if I get paint on the stairs she will buy a cat🤧🤧🤧
Better be careful then!
Watched this and will definitely be doing this, especially as my wife saw me watching the video and said how easy it looked. Was the paint water based?
You need to be careful what she sees you watching else you'll be starting a new garden office project or loft conversion soon!
Yes, waterbased which I'm not necessarily a fan of but does dry quickly so multiple coats per day.
Is it better to pull off the tape while paint is wet or after it dries? I'm worried the paint will peel off with the tape if pulled off when dry.
Thank you
What about if you have to undercoat or two top coats
make more videos please best regards from PARIS
Lots more coming!
Rarely any need for any type of tape. For skirting use a 1/2inch angled window brush, don't overload with paint & gently splay the bristles as you cut into the carpet. Job done. Tape will leave a mark on the painted surface ( i notice you never gave us a close up shot of the finished article). Mind, i have been doing this for decades so...
make sure u have a dust sheet down lol . i always paint also out of a small bucket that way i am not carrying the full tin about . great video though .
Thanks
Rather than parcel tape that migh leave goo behind try 50 mm polymide (Kapton) tape, it is very tough stuff!
You blessing mate, guess what I'm painting .... TODAY ..... and I normally end up with paint all over the carpet
Good luck
👍😁
I used to go to school with Gaye Abandon.
How is he?
Sounds good. You didn’t show a close up of the end result.
Excellent. How do I access your other videos please?
While on the video page just click on 'Proper DIY' below the screen and it will take you to my channel.
