  • This week on Urban Valor, we chat with Sergeant Major Alex Caro. Alex's journey began in Brooklyn, NY, where he overcame the challenges of gang-dominated streets and avoiding the gang lifestyle. His inspiration to join the Marines came from when he joined the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC).
In his military career, Alex started with an open contract, assigned to be a Inventory Management Specialist. He has served in critical deployments across Iraq, Afghanistan, and as a Marine Security Guard. At the time of this interview, Alex was a First Sergeant, now proudly holding the position of Sergeant Major.
Alex's episode focuses on the importance of military transition programs, offering insights for those following a similar path.

Served under this man when he was a brand new Gunny, outstanding guy and didn’t take no BS towards himself or the Marines entrusted to his care, solid as hell.

I did not particularly like the part of the Drill Instructor throwing everything into a big mess. In reality, it is not necessary. I joined in 1984 as "an open contract," my recruiter's bullshit. Long story short, I did four years as an 0311, deployed on three Westpacs, earned my awards and Honorable Discharge and got the fuck out. Alex is right on key. Marines or any other service members can benefit from opportunities offered to them. When I was in, they were Non-existent. You got out, so long, good bye. After I left, I used my benefits to complete my university degree in Political Science/ International Relations and joined the Army reserves. Took classes and learned a great deal. There weren't many egos at my school or reserve unit, thank God.
I was asked three times to re-up, each time I said no. I was in 1/9. We had major drama in that fucking place. We had Marines go AWOL, my Staff Sergeant get popped for drugs. He 14 years in; we had alcoholics, one in my fire team get a medical discharge due to alcoholism; we had so much drama. The Marines could not pay me enough to stay in.

Deployed with him during R4OG, I was a brand new Lance Corporal my Sergeants treated me like trash but since I was working in a different MMF Van I got to work with Sergeant Caro, Gunny Hernandez and Sergeant Thomas and they treated me like one of there own Lance Corporals and till today I'm proud that I got too serve with them... Sergeant Major Caro has a dope ass ring to it...words can't honestly express how glad I am to know that the future of the Marine Corps has him to lead

I agree with this Marine about the importance of self improvement and progress. I did my four years in the Marines and got out. Afterwards, I used my benefits to complete my university degree in Political Science/International Relations with a minor in Sociology. I also went into the Army reserves and learned a great deal. To this day, I can honestly say it was about being in the right place at the right time and having a desire to grow. During my four years in the Marines, there were many challenges. My platoon Staff Sergeant with 14 years in got busted for popping on a drug test; we had several Marines who went UA or AWOL, same bullshit; we had Marines get busted down to Privates; we also had too many heavy drinkers, today I would classify them as alcoholics..
Sgt. Major Stated some will do better when they leave the Marines and others may do worse. I completely agree with him, 100%.
The Drill Instructor who put his hands on him should have gotten into trouble. Many who go into the Drill Field do not come from an Infantry related MOS. They want power over others. That's why many have been kicked out of the Marines. For their incompetence and stupidity. When we were about to graduate from MCRD, a Drill Instructor crossed the line and struck a recruit. That is a complete abuse of one's authority. This Drill Instructor was from a series platoon, same building, different floor. When I saw him, he looked fucking pale. Hopefully, he got into trouble. The Marine Corps has their share of egos, power thirsty and power hungry individuals. Many are assholes. They came from the middle of nowhere and now they have inflated egos. I met my share of good Marines. But, I would not re-up in the Marines for any amount of money. Yes, I have my Honorable Discharge and Good Conduct Medal and other awards. But there were times that it was just too fucking depressing. Many know this is true.

Those events are in every platoon, ours was.... You got your SDI fired cause you suck so bad... he was on leave for 2 days lol. The company gunny was even on it and filled in for a day. Then the kill hate tried to light the plt guideon on fire and destory it and we all formed a school circle around it to protect it untill the SDI came out and "yelled" at him. Then at the range he made us throw all our chow away when we got back to the squad bay the SDI asked if we ate yet. We all said yes then he took us to the chow hall lol
