A good video. When we visited Vitoria we too were impressed with the open spaces, the great public transportation, and the green spaces. In fact I decided to go just because it was chosen as the European Green Capital in 2012. Since we were driving we stayed outside in Murgia and drove in for the day. We left our car in a free parking area at the entrance and took the tram into the city. Very practical. Vitoria seemed very wealthy with a high standard of living. Unemployment is relatively low since there are a lot of manufacturing companies that have operations there, including Mercedes-Benz, Michelin, and Gamesa, the big manufacturer of wind turbines. The city has been ranked second in standard of living among all cities in Spain, and first as to green areas and cultural places per capita. The only negative, as you mentioned, is the cold winter, with the average high of 9 Celsius and low of 1 Celsius. But, you can take consolation in that Burgos, Ávila, Teruel, Valladolid, and Sória are colder.

Thank you so much. That's a lovely homage to my hometown. Very much appreciated, man.
Vitoria-Gasteiz is a wonderful city, I was just there during the Fiesta de la Virgin Blanca. It's a nice place to visit, especially if you're looking for a city that doesn't have a lot of tourists.
Hi, I'm from Venezuela, but I've lived in Vitoria for 7 years. I want to provide times when you can come to Vitoria. If you want to see Vitoria at its best, when there is more activity in the city, when wonderful and free concerts are held, when there are cultural activities and workshops, and among many other things. To see this, you have to come between August 3 and 10, which is when Vitoria Gasteiz's parties are. For example, this year he played a wonderful DJ in the plaza de los fueros, right in the center of Vitoria. On the other hand if you want to have a quieter holiday, it is best to come from August 11. It's when the holidays are over and people leave on vacation and the city is literally empty. The bad side is that some establishments close and some of your interest may not be open. And the ideal combination would be to come and see the two stages. See Vitoria vibrant and beautiful and then see how calm and natural it can be. I hope you serve the advice and understand what I said as I use the Google translator hehe. Greetings and beautiful video. Im from Vitoria too! And I never thought about how beautiful is my city until I was leaving it for some days... it looked so beautiful and now that I'm in a vacation I really really want to go back, its such a cozy quiet place, I love it! By the way!!! Thank you for making this video, I just watched it with my sister and her boyfriend and we are all really happy about it! You seem like a very nice guy! Come back to Vitoria when you want, we welcome you with our arms open 💙
Thanks for the visit! I´m glad you liked our city! About the water, yeah, there´s no coast line but there are a lot of pools for the summer, 2 enormaous artificial lakes and a train to the coast. Also there are 7 rivers under the city, so there are no water problems :D
Thank you friend, I am from Vitoria, thank you for your beautiful comments of my city, everyone who wants to come to know us is welcome, a hug (my English is not very good)
@@raquelreciogaldos903 Thanks! I´ve heard that there are amazing restaurants to visit and I always love the mountains. However, unlike Stuart, I´m just getting started as a teacher here in Spain. And while I´ve been using other online sites (like Verbling) for a while to deliver my online lessons, I´m finally getting my own website going for online lessons, and it´s taking a lot of my time.
Good luck ben, sounds a good enterprise, i once went on a training course in northern germany, our tutor has worked in every European country and he says that in every one the northeners are the best, i can concur that wholeheartedly
Vitoria, for me, is the unsung gem of the Spanish Basque region. Bilbao has the urban grit and steel (but also a small and delightful Casco Viejo), San Sebastián has the curvaceous lines of the beachfront, but for me, a vastly overrated rest-of-town (essentially one small plaza - Consti - and a couple of streets is worth your time), with most of it being an anonymous, nondescript, apartment-blocky mess. Pamplona (is it *really* Basque?) is lovely, with an extensive and beautiful Casco Viejo cancelling out the drab blight of so many a Spanish city - its bathetic suburbs. But Vitoria. The name alone woos. The city itself backs up the titular promise with a glorious undulating old centre with two of the best plazas in all Spain and web of narrow streets worth a day’s rambling of anyone’s time.
I am very happy because of this amazing vídeo you made, i can only tell you thank you cause i think as you that Vitoria is a beautifull city and it is pourly unknown. A smash like from me, a gasteiztarra well done very good job, continúe like that!👏
You mentioned that it rained a lot. It does if you are comparing Vitoria to Madrid. According to data from 1981 to 2010 the yearly average rainfall in Vitoria was 742 mm while Madrid was 423 mm. But then Madrid ha almost desert-like conditions. We always think that Dublin, Ireland is rainy but in a year it only gets 754 mm, about the same as Vitoria. If you don't like rain, then avoid Santiago de Compostela where in a year you can get 1,787 mm. On the other extreme is Almeria with around 200 mm per year, the driest city in Europe.
@@angelpereira5278 I searched and I couldn't find your information. It would be surprising since Spanish cities are not known for their green areas. I did find mentions of Berlin, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Stockholm, and Oslo.
Love your channel! You made a video of my city! Love it! Pretty accurate! It's a small city really easy to live in and if you like the coastline you can go on weekends is less than an hour drive!
Thanks for showing up Upabi!!! Just at the end of the video it's the corner bar and it's great!!! The best coffee in Vitoria gasteiz!! And thanks as well for the video of our city!! A great city to live and enjoy life!!! 😍
Hello, Unai here, I've been studying here for a year and you haven't mentioned some aspects, even though the video summed up really well the city and the life. Gasteiz it is well known by it's university campus and also the variety of all kind of bars and restaurants as well as cultural diversity. Well done! 👍🏻
I have been in love with this city since visiting a friend there a couple of years ago. La Kutxi, the streets with a lot of bars and restaurant in the city center, has a great vibe and people are really friendly. On the downside my friend always complain about the weather in winter as it can rain for weeks and apparently the job market is not really good. Met this guy on a bus from Bilbao who was an engineer and he told me that a lot of graduates there can t find a job or they have to work for shitty salaries like 800 Euros a month. Can any local comment on the job situation in vitoria?
Hi. I'm not a Spaniard but currently live here. I'm also engineer but it's absolutely doesn't matter here. If you want to live you have to work where you'll be able to find a job. I worked 1 year at one factory on a lowest position and earned 1200 euro and at the same time paid 700 euro for a rent. In my opinion here are few reasons of this: huge unemployment and not the best mentality of the local population, which wants the employee to do everything but for little money. In this regard, I 100% sure that this is not an immigrant country.
@@oleksandrshvets1333 Thanks for your opinion. 1200 Euros is not a dream wage but you can definetely live on it without going hungry. Unfuourtunately rents in Spain have gone through the roof but sharing a place or renting just a room could keep the expenses down. Cost of living in Spain i.e. food, transportation, bars etc.. is quite reasonable. Take care
In Vitoria and in the Basque Country in general there is less unemployment and the salaries are much better comparing to other parts of Spain. Quite good work market. Unemployment rate in Spain is almost 14% whereas in Basque Country is 9% Same with salaries. The only bad thing up here is the weather
As a Vitorian I am, I feel happy and grateful to hear the wonderful words you have used to describe my hometown. I am very proud of my city, thanks for showing it as it is.
Good videp but you've forgottem to talk about the old cathedral Santa María,one of the most important cathedral in the world. Thanks for showing our city.
I usually can speak English quite well but in this video I heard two words I was not familiar with, nicked and busker, perhaps more of Australian slang. I also find it curious how you say “one of the better” rather than “one of best”. Well, learning every day. Thank you
Nicked is slang for stolen, it s very very common in british english. Busker is a regular word for street artists asking for donations, usually musicians. Hope it helps.
As you can see in the comments belllow, Vitoria's citizens are proud of our city. This is one of the reasons why we are friendly with foreingers, hospitality is one of the city's signs Thanks for this video and you are always welcome to Vitoria Gasteiz! Agur :)
Very good video! I was born and currently I live in Vitoria Gasteiz and I am glad to know that our city has such a good reputation among tourists 😎. I also agree with you regarding the pintxos, they are the best out there in terms of Basque cuisine 🤤. That said, I hope you had a good stay here :)
I was born in Vitoria-Gasteiz and I live there. About the bikes, they stole them but not as much as in other places. We don,t have a beach but we have a very big lake where you can swim and do acuatic sports.
Actually they are 3 artificial lakes and 2 out of three have recreational areas with beaches and facilities.
I was wondering why was that kid following you for the second time in a different part of the city, then everything made sense towards the end of the video. Nice city btw :)
Judging from the upload date, you came to Vitoria around last week. If only you came between the 4th and 9th of August! The local holidays are celebrated here and the place is packed! Typically, people leave Vitoria after that for vacation, thats why it is quiet for the most part.
A festival called “Jazzaldia” was happening that time that’s why you saw the concerts in the street. It’s a Jazz festival happening every year. We also have a popular Rock festival and other cultural events happening during the year.
Good video, but i think y had to add a photos from "Los fueros" (in center of Vitoria) and Salburua park, that 2 are so beautyfull center zone and park here...(sorry for my bad english^^)
Thanks for the video of my city!, There are two lakes 20 mins by car or 50 mins away accesible by bike from the city of you like water areas as well. Nice video!
great video stuart. id really like to go there, you didn't mention the airport? im assuming its internal flights only, the city looks proper nice, im a great lover of northern spain as its nice hot in the summer but not stupid hot and can be like england in the winter, my kind of place. i don't suppose your that far from the seaside, perhaps less than madrid? look forward to your next one, always brightens my day up at work.
Hi! I was living in Vitoria along 3 years a d is a nice city, is true. There is too a river, the Zadorra, an afluent of Ebro. Near Vitoria you can sweeming into the river, and go to the beach of the big lake thas is 10 minutes by car or bus from the city and practise water sports too. Is arounded of beautiful natural parks with the highest mountains of Basque country.. Is a gold recomendation, yes! You have been lucky with the weather because in July can rise highest grades. And during winter we called it Siberia-Gasteiz..😁 Is really , really cold (8-10 grades less than Bilbao some times) and wet, because the river and lake. The best moments usually: Autumn (mass of trees are beautiful) and Spring until first days of July.
as a gazteiztarra im proud that you promote the city like this but there are a lot of other things you havent shown like the shopping mall that is near to michelin factory or things like that
actually, bikes are stolen here all the time. my sister got her bike stolen and so did her friends. a few friends of mine also got their bikes stolen and my other sister got the bike's wheel stolen too. but the city is great!
They are rotating... is just the city system since cops can't do shit agains those thieves that are almost kids, the law can't touch them. Never leave a good bike in the streets when its night by the way, they are so easy to steal. The stole me 5 bikes in 10 years...

Hello, Unai here, I've been studying here for a year and you haven't mentioned some aspects, even though the video summed up really well the city and the life.
Gasteiz it is well known by it's university campus and also the variety of all kind of bars and restaurants as well as cultural diversity. Well done! 👍🏻
Can someone confirm the greeting he says in Spanish at the 9:25 mark? (How's things?) - Doesn't sound like Que tal or anything else I would know.
Nice video!. There's a important river called Zadorra up north. You can walk along it
I have been in love with this city since visiting a friend there a couple of years ago.
Unemployment rate in Spain is almost 14% whereas in Basque Country is 9%
Same with salaries.
Iñigo Rodrigo wasn't the pillars of the earth inspired by this cathedral?
No,i think it's anorher book by Follet,I can't remember the title.
Muchas gracias
@@inigrodrig The second part was inspired in "old cathedral"
Marvelllous video!
It would be great if you visit San Sebastian. BTW, go on recording these amazing videos Stuart!!
Great video, Awsome to see you liking the place! Not a stunner touristic visit but a great place to live.
Your spanish is great, mate. Thanks for coming to Vitoria and I hope you’ve really enjoyed it. Cheers
thought I understood that the autonomous community of La Rioja was also an Euskadi region
You are lucky he didn't mention the flamin galahs!
Nick and busker are British.
As you can see in the comments belllow, Vitoria's citizens are proud of our city. This is one of the reasons why we are friendly with foreingers, hospitality is one of the city's signs
Thanks for this video and you are always welcome to Vitoria Gasteiz!
Reservoirs
I was wondering why was that kid following you for the second time in a different part of the city, then everything made sense towards the end of the video. Nice city btw :)
Great job showcasing the beautiful city of Vitoria!
My beautiful hometown 😍 i miss it so much
Thank you very much for share a video of our beautiful city!!!
Love, Love, Love, Love, Your Videos.
Im from Vitoria and you are right! I love my city and you must try the pintxos. I love how you talk about my city
Great vid as always
Judging from the upload date, you came to Vitoria around last week. If only you came between the 4th and 9th of August! The local holidays are celebrated here and the place is packed! Typically, people leave Vitoria after that for vacation, thats why it is quiet for the most part.
Hi, I was there last month around the 15th.
Next time Go to garaio to see our costline, better than Bilbao water haha. Thank you for the beutifulls words about my city :D
Thanks for the video of my city!, There are two lakes 20 mins by car or 50 mins away accesible by bike from the city of you like water areas as well. Nice video!
Gracias por dar a conocer nuestra ciudad !!!
Good stuff! Have you done a vlog in San Sebastián?
HI, not yet. On my list.
spainspeaks excellent!

A lot of thanks for this vídeo, and welcome to our city
Me enorgullece que mi ciudad guste tanto

Im from Vitoria Gasteiz
Me too
I Think i saw u yesterday in the morning while I was riding my bike, I think u told me: careful! Thanks! ahahah
great video stuart. id really like to go there, you didn't mention the airport? im assuming its internal flights only, the city looks proper nice, im a great lover of northern spain as its nice hot in the summer but not stupid hot and can be like england in the winter, my kind of place. i don't suppose your that far from the seaside, perhaps less than madrid? look forward to your next one, always brightens my day up at work.
John Newton We have an airport but it doesn’t have that many flights available but there’s a more international one close by in Bilbao.
The airport has very few flights.
If you want to come from England you should fly to Bilbao. It's in the Basque coastline and less than an hour drive
Hablan español en Vitoria o solo Basque? Es muy bonita ahí. No mucho calor.
What would you guys say would be the best coastal cities in Spain???
San Sebastian
rungideon any other cities wouldn’t mind a top 5 list lol 😝
It depends.
What is your criteria?
For holiday or living?
as a gazteiztarra im proud that you promote the city like this but there are a lot of other things you havent shown like the shopping mall that is near to michelin factory or things like that
actually, bikes are stolen here all the time. my sister got her bike stolen and so did her friends. a few friends of mine also got their bikes stolen and my other sister got the bike's wheel stolen too. but the city is great!
Hi. Well, there's plenty around for thieves to take their pick.
They are rotating... is just the city system since cops can't do shit agains those thieves that are almost kids, the law can't touch them. Never leave a good bike in the streets when its night by the way, they are so easy to steal. The stole me 5 bikes in 10 years...
@@spainspeaks yeah the thieve thing is really a problem. Better have a cheap bike and good locks, I think this happen everywhere in Spain.
Great city to live in
Great video! Love your channel!
