I kid you not. I watched this video, found it very sensible. Went out to play golf as I ALWAYS do every week no fail and on the 17th hole, 145’ par 3 over water hit my 1st hole in ONE in 9 years of playing!! Next week, different hole par 3 155’ and came 4” from the hole. This has drastically improved my game and aim. Try it! I swear by this instruction video.
Let’s go!! Post of the month right here. 👊

Golf is easy. Just do thirty-two things perfectly every time and the ball will go long and straight!
You are correct. Which is why I am a proponent of the single plane swing. It removes several of those complications.

Stand behind your ball, look at your target, pick an intermediate spot in front of the ball that lines up with your target line, square up clubface to that then the rest of your stance. Swing.
Well said, big miss in this video. Gotta check wind, pick spot, pick spot x" in front of ball. lone up scoring lines than follow Todd's instruction. Love his vids, he missed on this one.⛳✌
agreed 100%. You can't possibly line up to any target while addressing the ball.

What about looking down target line from behind the ball and picking intermediate point? That should be first thing. Right?
Your absolutely right
What you suggest is another solid way to accomplish the goal.
@@USGOLFTVshow What if you're blind?
Do that AFTER you square the club head in your hands, then aim the clubhead at the intermediate point; you can do both in the same setup.
Or you stand behind the ball and find a broken tee, a discolored grass or leaf on your target line and make sure your swing plane is delivering the club face on that line.
Yeah, I dont get why you want to aim for and try line up to a small target 200 yards away when you can aim and align for one 2 feet away...
Doesnt stop me from pulling, but works wonders when I dont :p
Way too much thinking.... Sure get your alignment but frankly good ball strikers make subtle adjustments based on wrist / impact shot shaping. Intermediate alignment target helps but most of all in my experience set up behind the ball, check your target, address and take a few peeks to where you want to land the ball, adjust feet alignment if need be based on your "feel" of the shot and execute using muscle memory. This is too difficult to explain in words. Sorry... Too much thinking will destroy you !!
In order to aim correctly, you must determine your dominant eye. Very important when putting.
Solid advice Jay.....
What the hell is a dominant eye?
I’ve been playing now for about 2 months. One of my buddies I play with regularly who’s been playing for years always points out my bad aim. I’ll be lined up to what I feel is good. And he’ll point out hey, you’re lined up at that tree over. Hey, you lined up at that water over there. And I’m like wtf you talking about? Bc I’m looking over my shoulder and it looks lined up? Well, I was wrong.
I had another buddy who saw me at the range and broke it down a lot for me. You looking over your shoulder to make you’re lined up isn’t good. He had me stand behind him to show me how I was aimed, and I was surprised when I was off.
But just like a lot of people here saying, I’ve learned to line up, and use something immediately in front of my ball to line up with and square my club face up to it.
Just play golf with a pencil with an eraser. Saves you strokes of your game every time.
why do all these instructors have to talk so much?
I think one of the most important steps to aiming properly is to pick an intermediate target, a spot on the ground, maybe a foot or two in front of the ball, that is in line with your target. It's much easier to align the clubface square to a target that's 1-2 feet in front of the ball than it is to align it to a target that's 170 yards away. I do this on every shot with every club in the bag from driver to putter.
This is a solid concept of picking a small target just in front of the ball...thanks for sharing
Absolutely correct! I have to do this with every shot!
Parallax error is a problem with this method. Use an intermediate target to align the clubface. 2' in front of the ball, a blade of grass, a divot, broken tee etc. Its much more effective
Question addressing the ball off the hosel of the club rather than the sweet spot. i get better results and hit sweet spot of club regularly not sure how this works is it because of my swing path and how do i aim irons correctly if i address the ball this way thanks help needed LoL!!!
You are not alone here. Many of the best players do not line up the ball in the exact center of the club, if it works, keep at it. Thanks for posting.
This is all good info. Absolutely correct. But it is missing one very important key element that I learned from my pro decades ago and I don’t understand why today’s pros aren’t emphasizing this.
Watch a PGA tournament. Before every shot, every pro is standing behind the ball. Sometimes, they are raising their club with the shaft in front of their face. WHY? They are creating an imaginary line from the target to the ball. THAT is the target line this guy mentions, but he never tells you how it’s created.
BUT WAIT! YOU’RE NOT DONE! While still standing behind the ball ,identify a small item directly in front of the ball AND ON THE TARGET LINE… the tip of a leaf, a noticeable blade of grass, a dry spot, anything to use as a point of reference. Be precise! Keep your eye on your reference point, don’t look away, and approach the ball using that imaginary line between your reference point and the ball. THEN follow this guy’s instructions, but keep using that reference point to help you get your club face perpendicular and your feet, hips, and shoulders parallel to the target line.
This is very important! If your club face and body are off line just a little at address, your shot will be off 10-30 yards at the other end. 1/2” can be the difference. Be precise. Build that foundation of straight lines before approaching the ball.
Thanks for taking the time to write this. I was thinking the same thing, but you did such a nice job putting it all together.

Err ... step 1 is to stand behind the ball, find the line and pick a spot about 15 inches in front of the ball on the line. Step 2 is to line up your club face square to that spot. Step 3 is set up your feet and shoulders square to the clubface. Done. You cannot see the line by standing next to the ball as the parallax error comes into play.

That's why I don't subscribe to these arrogant assholes that spin people around and around just because they play above average. IF anything, confirming the line can only be done by peripheral vision that is acute. Eliminating para distortion. Guys like this need to stop teaching.

I'm sure this is a silly question, but what is the leading edge of the golf club? is that the front of the club where the lie/loft is?
Great advise thanks but I'm curious to know if you start with feet in line why does the right foot look like its 3 - 4 inches behind the left foot or is it just the angle of the videographer ?
“Your feet don’t hit the ball”
You obviously haven’t seen my foot wedge.
LOL
I'm a plus 2 handicap, age 60, been playing for 35 years. I learned from a teaching pro back in 1988 to set up my irons EXACTLY as being taught here. I also place my feet together and step out EXACTLY as shown in this video. Tiger does this as well.
I can also cut my ball by slightly closing or opening my club face without moving my feet using this setup.
Picking a target spot in front of your ball may work for most but I bet you have a double digit handicap.
Many important things involved so I'm not saying these setup is a Johnny Fix All but it should help.
The way you grip your club, takeaway and tempo of your swing is very important obviously, but this setup will help you hit straighter shots.
The only time I use a target in front of my ball is when I'm putting. I find three spots between my ball and the hole. The midpoint is where I want the ball to cross and the first and last set the speed for the putt.
Best of luck guys, it's a great game and if you're breaking 80 you're in the top 5 percent!
James, great story right here. Your old pro did well my friend! Thanks for sharing 👊
Wow +2 at 60, I am 60 in 5mths & off 5, you give me hope, keep it up. 👍
Been a +2 since I was 17, herniated a disc and had to give up competitive play. After lots of PT, stretching, and exercise, I’m so grateful to be able to play again casually and score almost as well as I used to. Never knew breaking 80 was top 5%, definitely feels like even more of an achievement after everything that’s transpired. Hope I can continue to play this beautiful game throughout my life and maintain a solid handicap into my 60s as well. Happy for you
For aiming, I was taught as you demonstrated turning my head while in position over the ball. However, I was also shown to stand behind the ball first in a straight line through the ball, to the hole and pick out a spot to aim at several feet ahead of the ball on that line. That way you can aim at something say 10 feet away, instead of 150 yards away. This method greatly improved my aim. To be honest, I thought I learned that from you?
@ Warhol’s Circus Exactly. Not much point in all of his procedures if you haven’t picked out an intermediate mark as you say. At least that’s the way I was taught.
Jack Nicklaus has been teaching that method for over 30 years, in his book "Lesson Tee".
Absolutely! I just wrote EXACTLY the same thing (I should be flogged for not reading this first). I don’t understand why today’s pros aren’t teaching this.
Putting is the same way...Pick your intermediate targets closer to you and start you putt on that target line!
I pick a spot or object a foot or so in front of my ball in line with my target and align my club face to that. It's too difficult to align it to a target 150 yards away.
Thankyou, I was going to write the same comment.

I don’t have a problem aiming, my problem is the green is nowhere near where ball lands.......
If only the green would be where my ball lands, I could be so much better. I feel your pain.
All good but when he goes to align his feet and steps side to side, they are not straight or even. Setting the club behind the ball doesn’t necessarily make the club point at the target either. Standing behind the ball and finding your target then picking a spot a foot in front of your ball is a better way. Also a great alignment tools is already built into your golf club. All irons have grooves on them and at each end they make the perfect straight line. Just make sure those lines are pointing at your target. So simple! Cut or draw stance, just pick your target, pick your aim point in front of the ball, align your groove line edges, and make your swing.
As I walk towards my ball mentally preparing for the next shot, I try to wall directly "behind" the ball so I see it in a direct line (hopefully) to the green or my next target. This also gives me a feeling of distance - not having one of those fancy watches! - and which club I should consider using. This video adds another dimension to better aim!
Love it! Thanks Angela for sharing your thoughts...always spot on 👊
Good idea, I need to start doing that
You forgot to mention how to aim the face of the club at your intended target and how to pick your intended target.
Jesus, a 2-1/2 min video becomes 5-1/2
Great video. However the first thing I do is get behind the target so I can get a spot 3 to 6 inches away and line up that way.
Captain obvious. But all but the obvious he is wrong.
Hours spent at the range will lower your score. One or two refresher lessons per season helps, too. I had one lesson early last year and dropped my handicap by 6 points! Early release was killing my aim, and my instructor saw this swing flaw in a nanosecond. Best $75.00 I ever spent.
Love your humility. It's never too late to learn things over again. Complacency can defeat you. I had a snowbird from Montana golf with me one day he said young man you mind if I have you try something different. All he did was fix my alignment and I went from driving 270 to 320ish I lost it again but eh that's golf.
The club does NOT hit a golf ball! A person holding a golf club and swinging correctly hits a golf ball straight.
golfing 56 years, went to baseball grip 10 years ago, besides water, i haven't lost a ball since. I lost distance but geeze, my pals laugh when i pull out the same ball I've used the last three games. It's free to try it. Split hands, neutral grip, half swing , don't need a glove anymore either.
No, it's my swing. 😉🏌♂️. When I swing poorly, I take my eye off thr ball and pull up, swing too hard or stiffen up from the impact on my body if I misfit. (Like touching a hot skillet) When I'm on, psychologicaly and physically, the balk goes where I want it. I can tell the second I stand over a ball. I never struggle right, left, short or long. It's if my swing feels proper.
I don't know how you publish a video on alignment WITHOUT including standing behind the ball to pick your target line and picking a point just in front of the ball to line up on. THAT is the most critical part of this process.
Fair point and one that many golfers have used to be successful.

Nothing is square at impact so why would address require feet, knees, hips, shoulders to be square to the target line.
As Jack Nicklaus stated, he never say a great ball striker that did not have his club face slightly open at address. He could not be more correct.
One thing I missed is how to air your body. For example, if I drew a line in front of my feet, should that line intersect with my target?
Really? The club hits the ball? Thx
I see that you didn't stand behind the ball and get a site line to your target, you don't recommend doing that ?

Pretty helpful. I was often pulling my irons cuz the topline was subconsciously influencing my aim. This was a bigger problem with offset irons like the Ping Eye 2's I used to play years ago and I tried to combat it by switching to less offset irons. But the simple act of lining up the toeline perpendicular to the ground has the clubhead looking much better at address and giving me great directional control. It's counterintuitive that putting feet together would help alignment, but it does. I am integrating that with the point along target line a few feet in front I have always used.
Great point. The new off set irons can make aiming a challenge. Thanks for posting 👊

1. Stand behind the ball before you line up.
2. Line up the club at the point about 4” past the ball not at the ball. This is one of the biggest influences on where it goes. Hitting any ball at the back is irrelevant unless the club is pointing the right direction just after impact!

Stand behind ball. Draw your imaginary line from your ball to the pin. Now pick a scuff, a yellow blade of grass something between the ball and green about 2’ in front of the ball now line up with the 2’ target and go!!!much easier to line up with a target 2’ in front of you!!!
Solid system you listed. 👊
I continue to pull my irons. Trying my best to follow Coach Kolbs instructions.
I do not have PGA after my name but I couldn’t disagree more, respectfully. The only way to line up an iron shot is like a putt. That is using an intermediate target No more than 10 feet in front of you preferably 1-2 feet. Then the club head is then set up square to that target which is it directly in line with the target that you are hitting at. Your feet are then set up appropriately along the line with the intermediate target and shoulders. If you are trying to hit a draw you want try to finish with your a square club face between 12 o’clock and 1 o’clock and rotate through. If you just use squaring up the leading edge and your feet you are relying on using your peripheral vision which only can look right for right handed golfer this hitting it right or pulling it or coming over the top to adjust. Using that intermediate target, even just a twig, piece of grass, whatever then “sets you straight” in line with your target and you just have to trust it because again, you are on seeing to the right of you!
Appreciate your post and thoughts. We welcome different ideas....no problem. Thanks for sharing.
My irons are horrible..I’m 20 yards short on every one. Any suggestions? Thanks much
Take a look at your takeaway and make sure the clubface is square not rotating open.
This is exactly what I needed lol
Maybe my eyes are broken but at 1:47 the iron doesnt look square to me but closed a couple of degrees. Also he stresses feet alignment being square to the ball with the rhymer alignment tool but when he addresses the ball at 4:41, his stance is slightly closed and not square. Again it could be the camera angle or my computer screen but......in theory it makes sense and I do some of the things he is teaching, but I do prefer picking a spot out in front of my ball to aid in alignment. I think of it as a very long putt. haha
Thanks for posting, some of this is camera angle as mentioned. In a nutshell, we like to see the clubface square to the target line at address with the feet every so slightly closed in the Vertical Line Swing System

Two things. Can you do to much hip bend what is enough. Secondly. I never line up any golf shot from the side... Every golf shot is played from behind...
Fair and solid post here.
Naah, you need the view from behind the ball. Pick your line and line up to your spot.
Lots of ways to do it...find your best way
It does not work. Tried it already. I miss by a mile. Either a mile right or a mile left. Anything but straight. But what I prefer doing is standing directly behind the ball and look at my target. Then I look at the ground near the ball, about 12 inches in front and 12 inches behind it. What I am looking for are blemishes on the fairway. There are always blemishes. I use these blemishes to square my club face to. I also try to keep the swing path square to these blemishes. But after all that, I still miss by a mile. The only thing that works is warming up for about 1/2 hour before playing a round. Then I start hitting greens.
So take a few practice swings first to get your tempo and mental prep then use this technique to properly align your body, club and shot...got it. Thank you

Aim away from trouble not at the flag.
Have read that another point about aiming the feet, especially as you get closer to the green, is that the foot alignment is parallel to the club face so think of railroad tracks. The feet aim slightly left of the target otherwise your stance may be closed.

The clubhead has two(2)....."angles"......! The groove lines and the top edge. These two are by design not aligned equal. The degree difference can as much as 4 degrees.
What's he's talking about. Your feet, hips and shoulders are all connected and will influence the swing. Stand behind the ball and pick something out in
front of the ball that is less than six feet away. Something on the target line that you can aim at. Then align my feet to target that line first, then square
the club face to the target line. I follow the alignment advice of Jack Nicklaus in his book "Lesson Tee".

@@USGOLFTVshow In the sixties, I wasn't much of a Nicklaus fan. I was more of a Palmer fan. Like so many other golf fans. Palmer was

I couldn't see the humble man that Jack Nicklaus was. It's the one reason that I would never, ever consider Tiger Woods to be the GOAT.
I would not put Tiger Woods into the top ten. Simply based on his personal life and behavior on the course. Setting wins and
ability aside. The man's character is constantly in question. There are so many champions from the past that have far better
character qualities than Tiger Woods.
Nicklaus has always demonstrated a calm confidence. Never have I seen Nicklaus loose his cool under pressure. Nicklaus has
always been the most genuine ambassador the game that we will ever see.
It was after my doctor told me to take up golf that I looked into learning the proper way to play the game. Everything else I found out
there, was written advice with photos. It wasn't until I looked at these illustrated books. Where I could clearly see exactly what I needed
to concentrate on. Beginning with the grip and building on fundamental mechanics.
I believe that for anyone to have the foundation of a swing they can build on. They need to simplify the process and
better understand exactly what they are trying to do. The book "Lesson Tee" by Jack Nicklaus is an illustrated book that helps simplify
the goals and fundamental mechanics of the golf swing. He has a second illustrated book called " Playing Lesson". That looks at
playing strategy to optimize a players chances for success and minimize the mistakes. These two books helped me break into the high
70's and low 80's for a weekend golfer. There are thousands of "Experts" giving advice and it's hard to know who you can trust. Maybe
for a select few. That advice will strike a nerve and mean something. I chose to get advice from the best that ever played the game.
I'm now 66 years old and have had both hips replaced and my right knee worked on four times and eventually replaced. The lessons I
learned from these two books are the foundation I have used to find my game, each time I've had to go through joint replacement.
Most people only learn to walk once as a child. I've had to learn how to walk six different times. You can well imagine how that can
effect the golf swing. I feel that these two illustrated books need a big shout out. I don't even know if they are still in print. If not,
they should be. Or they should be available as a download. Maybe you could look into that or make that happen.
You would be doing a solid favor to any weekend golfer.
I would add one more initial step stand behind the ball look at the target find a target a foot or so in front of the ball as an aiming point then walk around to address and follow your steps.

My brother has a terrible outside the line stance. I try and keep him square. But he says it’s the only way he can hit the ball straight. Ugh.
If you close an eye make sure you close your non dominant eye, otherwise you will not be judging things correctly.
After setting up as suggested a good way to double check alignment is to take a slow practice swing and hold the club out in the finish extension, the point in the swing where the club force pulls the trail arm straight and horizontal and the face has turned over with the toe pointing up. Where the arm and shaft are pointing relative to the intended target will predict the the direction the ball will fly off the face if the same biomechanics are used at impact.
A significant difference between the swings of pros and recreational golfers affecting the ability to hit to a specific target is an action called side bend. Turning the downswing the spine bends towards the trail foot which causes a reactionary lateral shift of the hips to target and allows the trail arm to swing and straighten down the target line, which is necessary to allow the club force time to pull the trail arm straight.
Absent any side bend action in the spine the swing is more of a purely rotational motion which will cause the club head to whip around to the left rather than out towards the target resulting in the trail arm being bent at the elbow instead of being pulled straight towards the target. If a golfer has the swing fault of not allowing the club force to pull the arm consistently straight in every shot - partial and full - it introduces a huge amount of shot-to-shot and club-to-club variability to the swing which will affect accuracy even with the consistent address procedure demonstrated here.
If you close on eye your club head will appear to move right or left depending on which eye you close. Probably not a good idea.
This is my first season of playing organized golf so help in every area is well appreciated , you are clear and easy to understand so I’ll be watching all your videos
Thanks Robert! Appreciate those kind words. Hope you subscribed. More great content coming. 👊
Does his same principal hold true for your drive an firwoods?
Good question, short answer is yes.
Retitle this basics for beginners, 5 minutes of my life wasted
Sorry you see it that way, hope our other content you enjoy and find helpful.
So do you get your body stait with the flag
You can have perfect alignment and still come over the top and pull the ball left or swipe across it and slice it right.
Another good tip is to leave your clubs in the car and wait at the 19th hole for your friends and drink
i put my bag directly in front of the ball to help me line up. it helps me to get perfect alignment and doesn't effect the flight of the ball.
so you could not hit a straight ball if you tried. you're either always in the rough to the left or right of the fairways and your playing partners must think you're crazy and leave and never ask to play with them again. i put my bag directly in front of the ball to help me line up?
I ask my playing partner to lie down directly in front of the ball, they only get hit every now and then so yeah . .
As a bonus, your bag is in easy striking distance with your club when you shank it.
@@williamwetherington844 it doesn't matter where the ball goes so long as your alignment is good. at least then you can console yourself with the thought that you weren't aiming there.
Hello Dash I hope you don't have helping me out to become a good golfer ?
Clubface pointing at target at address means it will be closed when the ball separates from the face. Left! Nicklaus had a slightly open face at address so the face would be square at impact.
Where is your ball position with 6 iron?
Slightly forward of center.
Most amateur golfers set up closed at address. What I see on video, especially from the classic golfers, that they first set up by putting the right foot forward to the stance, then the left. That opens the stance and offsets the tendency to close the body at address.
