For the colony that died over winter, did they not have enough honey to eat (they cap it off as a way to store their food, as you likely know). You guys seem to understand not to take too much for human use, as the honey is the bees food source.
They had lots of honey in the hive so it wasn’t a lack of food. But they had swarmed earlier, so we think they might not have had strong enough numbers to keep the hive warm through our winter. Four hives bundled together should help with this too we hope. And yes, we have a lot to learn but mass honey production isn’t our goal. We appreciate it but just find them fascinating too! :)
