I visit a beekeeper in Sweden to see what a day of beekeeping looks like. I learnt about how honey is made, how queen bees are reared and how Kalle runs his small business.

I have anxiety and depression bad enough that I need a service dog.
I am unable to preform most tasks for jobs, though I am getting better.
My parents got bees and we moved a swarm to my house. I love these little guys. My italian bees are calm and happy enough to let me work with them without a suit if I'm not removing frames. Don't even mind the lid taken off.
I'm hoping to do a lot more with bees and some with sheep. I figure if I can't really work a normal job, I have 55 acres to be a farmer.

Swedish former beekeeper here. How amazing is this! And it looks just like around here in Östergötland where I live. At most I had 37 hives and that year a average of 80kg honey per hive. That was hard work! I can't imagine having a hundred 😅 Good luck to you mate! 👍🏻

As a swede, the misquotes are absolutely annoying, but they are the worst in the forest.
If you are out when it’s a bit of breeze, strong enough to make its way through the trees. Then the small little buggers can’t handle it and you won’t have to deal with any mosquitos.
Also just picking up some roll on misquotes repellent works well.
We have very favourable laws for walking, foraging and camping in Sweden. So I recommend taking advantage of it while visiting.
Depending on the time of year and where in Sweden you are I recommend foraging for:
wild blueberries (blåbär in swedish, extremely easy, super delicious, they are everywhere, I believe they cover something like 70% of Swedens land mass),
Lingon berries (lingon in Swedish, pretty easy but you don’t find them in the same mass as the blueberries)
wild strawberries / alpine strawberries (smultron in Swedish. You find them everywhere, but just a couple of plants. And more in the edge of hedges or close by a spring. Pretty rare to find a really big patch of them in the Forrest. Super delicious)
Cloudberries (hjortron in Swedish. A yellow berry relative of raspberries and blackberries. You are able to find it everywhere in Sweden, but some parts of the country has more of it and easier to find)
Chanterelles (kantareller in Swedish. There are many other mushrooms to forage. But chanterelles is one of the easiest and most delicious)

I see that the headline of this video said you are a professional bee keeper. Do not know if you take suggestions from other bee keepers or not but here is something I do not know if you have heard about or not an a little something to help you out . Have you ever heard about running only 9 frames in your 10 frame honey supers . What you do is pull one frame out of your 10 frame supers an then space out your nine frames equally in the box . What this does is the bees will draw out these frames thicker than normal an believe it or not you WILL get MORE HONEY in these thicker nine frames than you will get out of 10 thinner frames . YOU WILL GET MORE HONEY. Then if you pull one out of nine supers that is enough to make you another super with out having to purchase the frames all you have to do is purchase just another qbox that adds to your equipment cheaper and I do not know how you uncap your frames but it makes uncapping a lot easier to do . Also if you sale your capping wax it gives more wax to do with what ever your need is . I hope you understand what I I am trying to say on this because it REALLY DOES WORK OUT GREAT. You can make more honey and money with less work an less equipment an less time . Good luck from the USA . Keep up the great work.

I'm a beekeeper from South Africa. I do the same for my broodboxes.. only 9 frames.. but for a different reason- i've noticed that the bees tend to leave the side of the frame against the box which could lead to the wax moth slipping in there and laying eggs. So I use only 9 frames to give them better space to defend their hive all around

I have a top tip for you, that will keep those pesky mosquitoes at bay. My father and I use Kanzuk barber lemon spray, the turkish barbers spray it on you, after they’ve finished cutting your hair. We found out from a friend that mosquitoes hate anything citrus. This stuff is amazing, as we used to get molested every fishing trip by the mosquitoes, now it’s great. Just a pity we had not found it years ago.

Hi Alex! Beekeeping is an absolutely fascinating subject! And to see it being done on an industrial scale is amazing, it’s certainly a full time job! It’s also because apparent to me that you have to accept quite substantial bee losses when dismantling and reassembling hives, but I assume losses are absorbed easily by bee reproduction! I wonder what happens when the worker bees from the mobile hives are out collecting and on their return to the hive, find that it’s gone! Do they join other hives in the area?

    Very nice video Alex!
Sweden is such a beautiful place, loved your drone work.
Congrats on finding the Chanterelle 🤗
Can i ask something as i know nothing about beekeeping?
Do bees ever realise they being robbed or harvested?
What do they get in return?

Bees do notice the honey harvest, you are opening the hive after all.
What they get in return, arguably, is being looked after. Disease treatments, etc. But a wise beekeeper will only take the surplus, so the honey the bees do not need.
