  • One of the many incredible things to see and do in Lake Superior Provincial Park, would be to explore Canada's most famous pictograph site.
Found directly on the north shore of Lake Superior, it is part of the absolutely stunning, Lake Superior Highlands.
One thing to keep in mind, is that the pictograph site is on a rock shelf that has a slope into the water, You must be careful of your step, and wear footwear with traction. It is also advised that you do not go when the weather is bad.
This site has a very large campground with numerous hiking trails, and an incredible beach, all within a few minutes walk.
Lake Superior Provincial Park is one of my favourite parks in all of Canada!
Getting to the site is quite easy. It is accessed directly off of the # 17 Highway (Trans-Canada) in Agawa Bay - about half way between Sault St. Marie and Wawa. You will see the signage once you enter the Park boundaries.

Beautiful loon calls. Quite amazing how those paintings lasted so long.

Thank you sir for the tour of the pictographs. Very interesting.
I've recently become very interested in North American history as it seems that there are new discoveries made daily.
Just finished up an article and the thing that stuck with me is that.. they estimated that before Columbus landed, the population of North America was around 54 million !!
Also that there was extensive trade going on. They found obsidian tools in Lake Huron, dated 9000 years ago, that originated in Oregon, some 4000km away! Another video I was watching talked about trinkets and tools found in the caves of Kentucky and Missouri there were from the beaches of the East coast. Same video was talking about excavations that revealed human activity in those areas as far back as 23,000 years ago. Even here in Texas they have found artifacts and sites dating to 23,000 to 25,000 years ago. Very fascinating.
    Thank you again.

I agree James, I think there is much more to factual history than what has been generally taught.
I read a quote once that said - It is the winners of the wars that write the history books.

The water in Lake Superior is also cold, so you don't want to fall in. It is a beautiful site. If you weren't aware, Selwyn Dewdney has a book about the pictographs you might want to check out - 1960s.

Look a LOT like Norse/Scandanavian pictographs. That, along with the Christian cross makes the origin of these very questionable.... Also so cool to see that behemouth and leviathan (dinosaurs and sea creatures) were still around then!

Appears to be evidence of when man and dinosaurs walked the earth together. The giant water lynx looks much more like a stegosaurus than a giant water cat.

Shoot. I didn't realize we needed a day pass to go there. We're driving by there this summer but our schedule has us out of the park before the office would even be open. But I wouldn't want my kids out on that anyways. I just thought it would be neat to take them down to the fenced platform at least. Oh well. We'll just stop at Sand River Falls or Chippewa Falls again and do some rock climbing there for a few minutes.

I think they started allowing travellers to actually purchase day passes in advance online. Check the Lake Superior Provincial Park website, I'm pretty sure they have started doing this.

@@bentroyoutdoors thanks! I will check it out. I had watched a travel blog where they said they weren't able to do that. But it could have been an older one. I don't always check the publish dates. I love history and Canada doesn't have that much in the way of ancient sites to explore. I also like to look out for the Group of Seven painter plaques.

    • @bentroyoutdoors
      @bentroyoutdoors  2 роки тому

Yes ancient sites are few, but I found one about 45 minutes east of Kirkland Lake that is amazing! There is actually an ancient mini-stonehenge hidden in the woods. It's the only one of it's kind in all of North and South America. I will be putting out that video in a couple of weeks or so.
