Centripetal force is a different thing. The term for the gyroscopic effect is rotational inertia and angular momentum. The weight being further from the center increases moment of inertia.

Therefore moving extra weight anywhere on the rim versus it being "evenly distributed" across the disc creates the gyroscopic effect

To add on to what was said, gyro is meant to give a spinning disc a greater moment of inertia so that it can hold a given angle more reliably. Theoretically, the disc with gyro should be able to resist both turn and fade for a straighter, longer shot, or hold any angle with more accuracy.
There are a few problems with this. The biggest one is that, when you give a disc a greater moment of inertia, it will resist the initial spin up more. An average thrower can't necessarily spin the disc harder, so for most people the gyro disc ends up with the *same* angular momentum at a lower spin rate. This would mean the disc loses the supposed benefits, since it would need a *greater* angular momentum to resist turn and fade more as advertised. As far as the pros' ability to utilize the effect, we just have to trust that they're telling the truth when they say it's definitely real. Until a mechanical throwing device with near-exact reproducibility is created (or publicized), it will be really hard to get an empirical idea of how much gyro truly works. If MVP is able to make single mold discs in the same mold as something from the overmold lineup, they could have a pretty direct comparison between gyro and non-gyro, but as far as I can tell all of the streamline and licensed discs have designs unique to the single mold lineup, and even then, disc molding is such a difficult science to perfect.
The other issue, although not as significant, is that discs are already gyroscopic without gyro, so the extent to which gyro can affect the flight is questionable. Putters, which already have the greatest natural gyroscopic effect, also have the most gyro plastic relative to the volume of the core. Therefore, even if MVP can make the gyro plastic heavier, it still has to be a similar density to what it would normally be to not go over weight. On the other hand, as you go faster in the lineup, the core tends to take up more and more plastic, thus the gyro gets pushed to the thin edge of the rim. As a percentage of the total plastic in the disc, drivers have less gyro plastic than putters and most of it isn’t as close to the edge, so the gyro effect is weakest on fast discs where it would be most useful. I think MVP wants to address this with the Beam, so I'm excited to see how that turns out.
As far as I can tell Tone has the same problem as the gyro putters, in that even if the plastics are different densities, they're not really moving the weight in a way that would affect moment of inertia. I do love the look of the Tone plastic, particularly the effect of the text inside the rim, and I love how clash plastic feels when I've gotten my hands on it. The claims about increased durability, especially at certain rocky Colorado courses, could hold up since stiffer plastics are noticeably better in terms of durability. I am stoked to see continual innovation in disc golf from multiple companies, so Clash and MVP definitely have my attention.

i never thought of the tone as a gyro competitor really when i first saw it. the biggest supposed advantages i’ve taken from any of the marketing i’ve seen is the grip and durability, which i think are great selling points. and, as you touched on, i think the biggest determiner of success for clash with this technology is making it accessible price-wise (which was not the case for the double steadys)

I don't have any other Salts to compare, but the one Clash sent me with TONE seems to have a more rounded shoulder, despite the flatter dome, which is likely why it's less stable than standard-issue Salts. That said, my 300' throwing noodle arm can actually use this Salt - so long as I don't throw it into headwind. It's properly stable with no wind, or a slight tailwind to me. It's a bit of a distance bomber if I hit it just right. Very optimistic for this dual-plastic tech.

Funny that you used the eagle envy to explain gyro…. Because technically the prism over mold is the same density as the proton flight plate lol. It’s basically mvps way of making “non gyro” overmold discs

    • @arhshields
      @arhshields 5 місяців тому

Same deal with the Time Lapse. Neutron overmold on a Neutron disc = no gyro effect.
It's 100% marketing. And I say that as a person with 50% MVP plastic in his bag.

Well I bought my first 5 infinite molds and since I love Innova molds it's nice to have more choice of runs and stamps for the discs I love. It was directly from your information on infinite. Keep it up! Pharoahs do bomb! And WAY better then the shryke or tern for slower arm speeds.

Angular momentum.. creating gyroscopic stability. Gyroscopic stability keeps it flying strait, the distributed weight make it's harder to get spinning, but it stays spinning longer once you do get it spinning. If you're a heavy spin player gyro WILL make a difference.

I have commented on several of your videos stating how much i like clash, their plastic is amazing and the molds they have are great, but a big issue they have is inconsistency. not with their operation, but the discs themselves very rarely do what the numbers suggest. my mint was a purple run and it flies more like a 4,4,-0.5,1 than its factory numbers of 4,3,0,3. and i cant find a honey that flew like the first one i got from them. however, the cinnamon has become my favourite disc in my bag. flies exactly how id expect

Random thought you could test… does it resist turning over? It seemed to stay flat and not push over too much so maybe it’ll flip to flat but no more?

Huge clash guy here, very involved with their community. We are just scratching the surface with tone. We have to remember they have been manufacturing plastic goods for much longer than they have been discs. They are way more advanced in the plastic world than any other manufacturer and that’s why I feel like the quality of their product is so much better than anyone else’s.
They have said that they can combine any 2 plastics they have into tone discs so there can be softer tops and firmer bottoms or vice versa. They will be playing around a ton with it. To me they have always been feel first. They have also said that tone will help them be more consistent in manufacturing. This is the first run so there are still some inconsistencies as they’ve refined the product. They have already made lots of tweaks for the 1st production run.

I will say I got 2 times and both are flat. They are too flippy for me too to be regular throwers. In the community the we have discussed the flat vs domey tones and there is a big difference. Domey is very coveted.
Clash has a really tight not community and some fanatic collectors already. Most people don’t know they have already gone through 2-3 different plastics they released limited times and will never be manufacturing again. They do a ton of testing and R&D.
They also have tone mangos and popcorns out in the wild. They are going to do some awesome stuff this year….
