    There is a lot of good nuggets in this. I’m finding a lot of great bracing content and I’m almost solely focusing on bracing rotation. Thanks nanners

    The shoulder brace with the off arm is an intriguing thought. Thank you.

    I would love to see more form videos, or even form break downs from you. You have improved so much in such a short amount of time, and it is incredible to see.

    You nailed the upper body anchor. I've consumed almost all the form videos out there for a few years now and found the off arm should help create the anchor for upper body which then leads to adding a whip from the throwing arm. If the off arm goes with, then there isn't anything bracing and creating a whip away from it. Some people go down and also backward. Either way the chest needs to stay perpendicular with throwing direction and not turning and facing the throwing direction. It's all to create lag and whip!

    8:35 where you talk about using your lat to coil through your lat rather than your obliques is super interesting. I also have a tendency to do this and you put it into words for me, I appreciated that and all your thoughts!

    GG is definitely best example of the off-arm anchor - his shoulder angle at the hit is so much bigger than other long throwers .

    I feel I can get addtional snap out of my right shoulder if I punch towards my right pant pocket with the left hand, Not punching down,but across my lower waist .... You should try standing still and driving the left hand to the right pocket and focus on what it does to your right shoulder. Then try standing still and throwing a right elbow to break down the door so to speak.Next drive the left hand to the right pocket and throw the right elbow to break the door down"Use caution you will create alot of torgue" . My thought is when timed correctly this can certainly add a few MPH"s to the back hand. This helped me break 400 for the first time last week. Im still fairly new and it could be attributed something else I was unknowningly doing but this is what I was working on when I broke 350 and hit 400.

      Hey I just want to let you know that I tried this advice just now, and it's actually a pretty good pair of cues that work well together. I'll try them out on a course tomorrow and see how it goes. Thank you! 🙂

    I feel like the off arm is super i.portant to make the throwing motion balanced, which means doing what you're describing and intentionally following through. Ive found im able to fix many angle issues by thinking about my off arm/shoulder rotation. Looming forward to the form musings with your coach!

    Call back to being a snowboard instructor where new riders would have their uphill (back) arm floating behind them to maintain balance and some use of direction setting by twisting upper torso to make the board turn. We would tell riders to hold their back pant leg to keep that arm down forcing the downhill shoulder, hips, knees, and ankles to take the work load of turning and engaging the new edge with lower dynamic movement rather than “swimming” with their arms. Seems like that through may transfer into disc golf a little? Or I’m just excited that I can go back to my previous life and apply it to my new hobby… anyways thanks for all the videos, I’m one of them that watches like all them… 😂😂😂

      Also a former snowboard instructor here. I think you are 100 percent correct that you can apply concepts from snowboarding to the disc golf backhand throw. Early on my knowledge of how the head leads the body really helped me to stop spinning out in my throw.

      @@Winton-fam after 12yrs of teaching and getting cert 2 and all that I approached Disc Golf similarly. Trying to maximize power with minimal movements and focusing on repetition to get that muscle memory. Just wish I started disc golf earlier than 41…

    Good video Tony. My opinion is to not focus so much on the off arm. Niklas and I think Jake Fish don't tuck their off arm in and still crush. Simon and Eagle tuck their arm to the side of their hip. As you know, Drew punches down. And Paul swings his forward to a point. There are so many variances. In my experience and an AM, an overactive off arm can lead to inconsistent/unintended angle release. In my experiments with the Techdisc, I found that when I try and spin by body and throw (spin & throw, twirly bird), it's slower than when I drive my weight and elbow toward the target. In fact, I found that if I stand still and just drive my upper body/elbow from full backswing, I get 53mph. With my full walk up (based on the Drew Gibson series on your other channel) I top out at 62 but average around 59mph. I've tried punching down with my off arm, swinging it aggressively, and pulling it back as I throw. It doesn't really add any MPH, but as a counter weight to the slinging arm it helps with accuracy on the course. I'd like to see you try some experiments like that.
    Also, try keeping your shoulder internally rotated like you're holstering a sword to your left hip and see if that helps your swing path

    I stopped trying to time/punch my off arm down or into the throw. It was just another piece that I needed to time correctly that was throwing off my overall timing and robbing distance and accuracy from me. I changed a little bit ago to a more passive off-arm. I've been pretty much copying Gavin Rathbun's form and have been having good results because I believe eliminating things from the throwing motion that are maybe unnecessary helps me time everything much better.

    I like to think of the off arm as an "anchor". Also keeping it close to the vertical axis of your body helps the rotation be faster. Like an ice skater trying to spin faster, they bring all their limbs closer to their body or widen their arms to slow their spin.

    Couple thoughts: I feel the same about the body protecting and getting used to new positions. As an older guy what I've noticed in the 'feel vs real' area, I 'feel' like I'm doing something but when I look at video I'm not. And its mostly my body protecting itself because it doesn't want to or can't be in that right position. I can't get to the fully correct brace position because my hamstring and calf and hips are protecting. Same with upper shoulder rotation and coil, I 'feel' like I'm fully coiled, but I'm feeling the max my body wants to let me get to. This is why these lanky flexible guys can bomb. Length and flexibility outperform strength imo.
    Edit: lol I should watch the full vid before i comment as you said the same thing
    I agree how you are saying with Eagle and Simon and Silas, or even Garret, it's not about the arm driving through for rotation, I think its more about giving an anchor for the back to contract and open the chest. Even Drew with his swim move, the end of the swim has the arm pulling back behind to anchor. Think about this: If you go to the gym and try a reverse fly or back fly machine, try to do the fly with one arm forward and just one arm performing the fly, you have less power and your body tries to rotate to compensate. Its hard to open the chest and contract the back halfway. Where as if you have the arm down and pushing back its close to performing the fly with both arms. I agree also that it effectively acts as the upper body brace to open the chest, without that you are leaking energy into extra body rotation.

    This whole thing with the back arm.. can we think about it as a counter movement? It's the whole action/reaction concept.. Ezra mentioned once.. the trailing arm pushes out(back) when blasting thru the "pocket".. you're so on to something with the upper brace.. it's completion is that slight undetectable push BACK with the off hand that no one talks about. Off arm mildly thrusts back while throwing forward.. I say all this while Paul Omen is challenging everything you^, and you.. over there.. oh, and you .. and me.. are saying

    I feel like I do this with my off hand and it wasn’t intentional but I do believe it helps. I have a baseball background so my lower body is solid I feel like but I have a big issue with not getting a good reach back, but I think since I do this with my off hand it still lets me throw semi far (415 is My farthest throw) i don’t really think much about my off hand that’s just how it naturally flows and I guess it’s been working lol. Any tips on how to get a better reach back?

    I think you're onto something. Bracing the forward and rotational movements of the lower body and upper body means that all the force of those movements is transmitted to the throwing arm.

    I raise my off arm for balance like a cat tail. Looks weird, but swinging it allows me to throw more body motion into my shot.

    Instead of driving/punching it down, what would happen if you force tucked it in like figure skating?
    Your arm would have to be slightly lower to avoid disc.

  • @Winton-fam
    @Winton-fam 3 місяці тому

    I think you may be onto something really important here that a lot of people misinterpret anout the off arm. As your torso/shoulders transfer energy into your upper arm (the next sequence in the kinetic chain) the torso should slow down not speed up. The off arm as a "brace" or anchor supports this idea.

    Eeey... Thinking about the off arm as an upper body brace make complete sense in context of the "rubber band effect".
    Bringing the off arm in helps stretch the upper back muscles, you have to brace/anchor the off arm so rubber band you created will pull the right shoulder around.
    I think it'll give you more effortless power for sure.

    • @ViJt-oq5nq
      @ViJt-oq5nq 2 місяці тому

      Hmmmm... Maybe there's something there to think of it as a diagonal brace? Right foot to left shoulder is what needs to be braced, left foot to right shoulder is what's being coiled?
      Some people do talk about reaching to their right pocket with the off arm.
