The 2555sl sounds good no matter what but I’ve found the afd to be very picky with preamp tubes. So far the best I’ve found is a Mullard Blackburn in v1, Raytheon blackplate v2, amperex v3, I don’t use the loop, and a sylvania Jan in PI. Also liked Baldwin labeled Sylvania short gray plate in 1,2 and 3
@@marvelharris9540 if you do have to change power tubes at some point try to find a set of sylvania 6ca7’s. I tried just about everything and those were hands down the best
I have exactly both as well. AFD sounds like a recording version, sound is processed and lacks body, it’s very sterile- on its own sounds sterile, mixed on a track sounds just perfect, it has the right frequencies on the mix. JCM Slash sounds more organic and I prefer it, the live Illusions sound is my fav.
That's great , could enjoy listening more on these beasts! I love the 2555SL it has that unique kind of airiness to it without compromizing "in beef". While AFD delivers a respectable healthy rock sound but seems to be a one trick pony after a while sounds a little too condensed for my taste. Great comparison though, cheers and congrats on these great amps!
What’s crazy is the afd100 sounds the BEST recorded out of all my amps but sounds the WORST in the room. That’s why that amp gets a bad rap- everyone is expecting it to sound good in their bedroom (myself included) which it just does not. I have no doubt it would shine in a band setting as well too
I have one afd and a jubilee 2555x. Afd have the tone like” ready to play and jubilee you have to Construct with pedals, and its a versatility. otherwise the afd don’t match to my taste with more pedals of distortion or eq in the front, because the tone is prepared.
I agree the afd is a specific sound. However if you sit and listen to the early GnR albums AFTER playing the afd you’ll hear slash’s tone in a whole new light. The afd really does nail the album tones and they don’t sound the same irl as they did in my head from listening over the years.
@@alexnuzzi4780 I prefer the slash snakepit tone which is the JCM Slash. Also, cannot believe the AFD heads are going for $4,000-$5,000 on Reverb. You could buy other better amps with more flexibility at that price.
Now play it with that pick on the wall.
😂 You too
Both of these amps are probably gonna go up in value now with the news of Slash going to Magnatone.
I know I heard that can’t believe it
@@alexnuzzi4780 Both of your amps sound great. Slash’s departure makes me concerned about the future of Marshall.
He’s not leaving Marshall he’s just working with magnatone currently
It's a no-brainer.
The 2555sl wins.
I have the same set up... great amps!

@@alexnuzzi4780 Ive been using the stock chinese tubes in the afd, so far so good.

@@alexnuzzi4780 good to know.. I actually picked up another slash head here locally yesterday.. lol

Agree 100% the afd sounds killer mic’d and recorded otherwise 2555sl all day!

I prefer the AFD… it has a lot more girth than the JCM Slash.

@@alexnuzzi4780 I have one too, that's also what I noticed. By itself it sound terrible but in a mix it's awesome.

I agree the afd100 doesn’t take OD pedals very well but doesn’t really need it either
I own the Marshall JCM Slash and tried the AFD. I prefer the Slash JCM. The Slash AFD sound generic. It also sound rawer.

woww. what are the settings you're using on the afd?
Presence and treble around 4 o’clock. Gain at 1 o’clock, master 2 o’clock, power dimed. Everything else around noon
id have em both hooked up in stereo with a stereo chorus pedal....super wide fat tone....try it....
2555SL just sounds like it plays/feels great
