@@orangewarm1 Seven? It's closer to Cube. James said that he was directly inspired by Cube. I think all three are different and great horror films. I think that SAW is slightly better than the other two and is the all-time classic out of the three, though Cube is a great horror film and really created this kind of genre other than a few early films, and Seven is great, of course, but you just cannot beat SAW. Of course, Seven being the first major of this type gives it an edge in a sense (Identity and The Game and Shutter Island are great examples, as well, to some degree, and even Final Destination and A Nightmare on Elm Street for the 'beating death' theme). I also like House of Wax, Misery, and Psycho, among other interesting horror films that played a key role in such later creations. The Man Who Laughs inspired The Joker and is from 1928 or something, and 13th Ghost is a good one (remake and also an older one), and then you have Bone Collector, Silence of the Lambs, etc. Anyway, the point is that we have a long history of such films and ideas and very few are really 'rip-offs'. You also have the thriller types such as Panic Room and Phone Booth (I think this was a Hitchcock idea but was never completed). It's hard to know what was the first true SAW-like film, but Cube is one of them with the 'traps' idea, not Seven. House of Wax and 13th Ghost are other early examples for 'trapped house' types, with the latter being supernatural, of course.

Even with all of the seemingly unintentionally cheesy lines, and clearly low budget, it still has such a unique voice behind it. @@nachgeben I guess it's more full-blown horror by the standards of the 1990s, more so the older generations who are used to films from the 1940s to 1980s. By, right now, it does seem much more 'thriller', and maybe even at the time, objectively, it would be more thriller. Personally, I think it's both thriller and horror (gore) -- and detective, as well. A masterpiece of cinema and James' greatest work, and one of the great works of horror. I do love SAW 2, as well, though, along with a few more of James' projects.

The first Saw is hands down the best Saw film in the franchise, and it gradually goes downhill from there. Saw 2 would probably be the next best, and then the only one after that movie that is serviceable is 6. The plot gets super convoluted for it's own good which is why people say it just gets worse, and I'm hoping that this Spiral reboot gets the film back on it's tracks because it has the same director as 2-4

I've seen every film in the series, almost all of which were in theaters with my dad (2017's Jigsaw, I watched on Amazon Prime because it was free and I was bored, still felt robbed with the time I wasted). I'll never forget us seeing the original in theaters along with the audience's reaction to that masterful ending, one of the best horror twists in history in my opinion.
You could hear so many people gasping throughout the auditorium as soon as the body started moving. My dad's generally hard to impress when it comes to movies, but his eyes were as wide as mine. And, no exaggeration, my jaw dropped exactly like Leigh Whannell's face. That iconic music was the cherry on top, becoming one of my all-time favorite horror themes.
EVERYBODY in the theater went quiet as Adam's screaming played over the credits. There were no applause or cheers, people just sat for a couple-few minutes and then left. I suspect that at least a few viewers were probably hoping for something in the middle or at the end of the credits to show if anything happened next. Mostly, we were all just kind of stunned.

    • @Justmyhandle
      @Justmyhandle Рік тому

@@Nichwar19 I do indeed, and it was one of those theater experiences that I don't think will ever happen again. There are many twist-endings in horror, but something about this one just hit differently. Some may claim they knew it was coming (If they did, good for them) but, in my experience, such viewers were a tiny minority even in 2004.
I don't think ANYBODY in our auditorium anticipated the body standing up, and the cinematography executed that whole sequence very well: It all starts with the lack of understanding on Adam's face as he plays a tape someone else had made for Zep, thinking the same thing we are: "If this guy was working for someone else, who could it have been?"
Then, the camera that was focused on Adam slowly refocuses on the initially fuzzy figure moving behind him, the audience confused as to who this guy is until that bloody corpse makeup comes off and you recognize Tobin Bell from the hospital flashback. The buildup of the music and flashbacks contextualizing everything is so powerful.
I have heard criticisms that Bell's voice while under the black/red hood (when the detectives almost catch him) may have given him away (maybe to a select few who were already devout fans of his work), but it was deep enough that I personally don't think most viewers made the connection. I had never seen or heard Bell in anything before Saw anyway.
It was all just such a mind-f***, realizing how this puppet master played everyone like a Chess game 99% of the players didn't even comprehend they were a part of until Checkmate was already nearing. Knowing that the person behind everything was RIGHT THERE in the room with them the whole time blew my mind.

The ending was one of the best I've ever seen. I was in the movies when I first SAW it. When jigsaw got up i lost it. Lol. This movie is gold.

It's so fun to watch you guys realize who Jigsaw really was at 20:00 - 21:28, this was my first horror film and seeing you guys made me feel like I was watching Saw for the first time again.
You should check out Saw 6 if you haven't already.

i was hyped af when i saw (pun intended) this pop up in my recommended! loved seeing you guys watch this for the first time and enjoy it that much. i'd definitely say watch the rest in chronological order because they play off of one another (i'd also suggest watching Saw III and Saw IV back to back). people say that Saw doesn't have a plot in the later movies, but it actually develops its plot a little TOO much. every movie up to and including Jigsaw (haven't seen Spiral yet) builds upon its own mythos more and more and just keeps adding to the world and characters of the Saw franchise. the traps DEFINITELY become more of a center focus, but the story also tries very hard to progress itself. apart from the first Saw, which is absolutely amazing, i think Saw II, Saw III, and Saw VI are some of the best in the series. i really hope to see you guys react to more of the Saw franchise because this was super entertaining! hope you guys are well and staying safe

Y'all need to watch two more " modern" horror movies "Session 9" and "May".
    They're both totally worth it!
    Great reaction as always!

So glad you guys went into this unspoiled. One of your best vids! As far as the rest of em go, the first three are the best and the rest are a mixed bag but are all fun and the whole series is worth watching.

I definitely recommend seeing all the movies in order. They are not 100% all gore, there's also a very interesting story of Jigsaw and other stuff that I don't want to spoil. Also, my favourite Saw film is the sixth one. The story, the traps, the gore - everything is perfect and it is the best Saw movies in my opinion, even better than the first one
