Yeah, I agree that the optics of making a list such as that can be problematic especially if it is used to harm groups of people without sufficient evidence but if the issue is as widespread as Maajid claims then what would you propose to counter such activity?

It's an interview, not an invitation to do a monologue. Bill invited him onto the show to discuss certain topics and he wanted to make sure he got all the points out that he was brought to the show to discuss.
A good interviewer knows how to steer a conversation. You don't just let the other person run their mouth, so to speak.

I'm an ex-Muslim. But I can't have a debate with my liberal white friends because they think I'm being Islamaphobic. They tell me that I don't know about Islam, but I spent 2 decades as a Muslim. It's hilarious that they think they know more than me. Lastly, I don't hate Muslims. My parents are Muslim and they aren't violent people. But we definitely need to acknowledge the issue in the faith when it comes to our treatment of women, treatment of gays, and treatment of ex-Muslims. And please, do not say it's an Arab cultural thing. I'm partly black and Asian, living in America, and we still have that issue in the religion. If my parents knew I was an ex-Muslim, they'd disown me and say I'm not their child.

No, Majid’s views are different than those of Sam’s. Sam Harris is anti-Muslim and neither understands Islam nor the different cultures within it. Muslims in Senegal, for example, are very progressive. Senegal, who is a majority Muslim country, elected as its first president, post-independence, a Christian. I am a Muslim from the Sudan and grew up celebrating Christmas and Easter, both of which were huge holidays. Ppl pigeonhole Muslims without taking into account culture.

Rarely have I seen someone put so much detail, nuance and clear thought into such a small timeslot. Excellent point about the three aspects with theocracy, regressive left and right wing populism being all equally dangerous paths. To me, this both sums up a very complex problem within a single sentence and also protects you from the attack reflexes from left and right. A genius solution to a dilemma that many liberal religion critics have faced.

When I see people like Majid I feel peace at my heart. People like him should speak out more so that Islam can improve as a religion. Every religion needs to change with time. As a Hindu I know my religion has flaws and I accept them and I don't practice those outdated traditions

I agree.. I believe due to the fact he's from that culture and from (and still is a part of) that religion, his talking points are much more adherent. If he is saying that some reform should take place I am more likely to believe him than someone who's not from that religion. He believes positive changes can happen but from within. David Hansen The US has no real socialist left, they have conservatives and extreme right. They have no access to free higher education, or medicine, religious groups and multinationals running the country through lobbying. Where is this socialist left that you speak of? On twitter? Instagram?
The left that you mention has no teeth at all, and I disagree with your optimistic view of Trumps presidency. Stronger unions would protect the workers, fighting for a higher and mandatory minimum wage would be protecting the worker. Investing in infrastructure to support future industries and jobs would be protecting workers. Isolating the country, investing in coal, damaging international trade and giving huge monopolies free reign is not and will never be in the interest of the common men.
You may consider my point of view as socialist left, but my point of reference is international, not domestic.
I can tell you without a doubt, that compared to other western countries, USA has no combative left, socialism has always been seen as a boogieman despite having many positive thing to draw from, and even during democrat prsidencies, the north american left has never been able to push against the right.
You are right that the positions have changed from 40 years ago, the world has changed, politics and trade from 40 years ago is no longer viable.
You support discriminatory policies out of fear for a made up enemy. Do you honestly belive that Trump is working for the middle class workers? That he is enacting policies to promote social advancement? If you do, then your views are the ones that are really skewed.
The policing of speech and education is a myth, a lot of people bark but there is no bite, and your president is the prime example of this, he can say the most outrageous things and people will voice their discomfort, sure, but nothing happens, like I said, the socialist left you mention has no teeth, no consecuence, a tiny vocal minority with no power, displayed as a terrible menace.

First of all, I live in a country where we have a lot of this "socialist" policies, and we have a lot more freedom and a much less polarized society, so the socialist dictatorship you claim is just BS.
Trump dragged his feet to claim "both sides", and walked it back the next day, not to mention the white supremacists in his cabinet.
So either Trump is a fucking moron that cant even tie his shoes, or he is a smart man, that chooses to align, support and give power to hate groups.

Maajid Nawaz is an eloquent speaker and raises many good points. It's worth pointing out that the vast majority of people who're fighting ISIS, dying fighting ISIS, killing ISIS fighters, and are victims of ISIS are themselves Muslims. They don't need lectures about how dangerous ISIS is. It's a reality for tens of millions of people every day. For the occasional bomb we drop on ISIS, there are YPG fighters, Iraqi military, Afghan military, and scores of other militia units quite literally fighting them on the ground. This whole discussion was an academic exercise about framing the problem as we perceive it. Don't get me wrong, it's an important exercise and a discussion worth having. What shouldn't be lost in the shuffle is that this discussion is taking place in the backdrop of plenty of a violent reality for tens of millions of Muslims in the Middle East as a result of which many have had to take up arms to resist jihadi groups like ISIS in order to just exist. One of the primary reasons groups like ISIS can flourish is because of the venom pouring out of places like Saudi Arabia where the repressive regime is probably the biggest funder of jihadi terrorism around the world, even if many of it is indirectly. This is the same repressive regime with whom US/UK and plenty of other countries, east and west, are rushing to do hundreds of billions of dollars of military deals with. The forgotten people of Yemen have paid a staggering cost for Saudi brutality.

Maajid Nawaz is always just brilliant!! He eloquent and a credible voice within Islam. Love listening to him. I like what the Southern Poverty Law Centre has done with supporting LGBT rights, racial and religious minority rights, but for them to call Maajid Nawaz a bigot makes the SPLC sound like the Regressive Left! Maajid Nawaz IS Muslims, he has the right to criticise suggest reforms WITHIN his own community. The SPLC should retract calling Maajid Nawaz and Ayaan Hirsi Ali a bigot or it will loose its credibility.
Love his ideas but love his sense of dress even more.
Along with Peterson, Sam Harris, Dave Rubin, Shapiro, and now Maajid, we're finally seeing a return to reason. It's about time!
