The Republic of Gabon issued commemorative stamps of Archbishop Lefebvre in 1996. He was very well loved in that country and they wanted to honor him in this way.
There will have to be several generations of folks in Rome passed before the full truth will be admitted to .............. UNLESS Christ comes back in the meantime to set things straight (then we win again!)!
If you want to hear a sound, reasonable defense of the SSPX, listen to the late Fr. Gregory Hesse, canon lawyer and Thomistic theologian. Listen to him while his talks are still available online. The late Father proved that Archbishop Lefebvre, in a state of emergency and in order to preserve the Deposit of the Faith, consecrated four bishops. Lefebvre's bold and faithful act constituted an act of juridical disobedience, NOT SCHISM. You can take the word of a canon, a priest who was originally Novus Ordo, or continue to listen to professional blowhards, like Cassman and Kennedy. The late Fr. Malachi Martin also proved that Lefebvre did the right thing.
Great discussion. I was 28 years old in 1988 and recall reading about Lefevre in the Wanderer. There was a lot of negativity in the general mainstream Catholic media at the time as if he was a terrible person, a leper to be avoided. It was at the height of the JPII era and most people had that impression. I've turned around in my thinking about Lefevre after seeing all the Modernism in the NO church. Ive started to attend the Nobertine TLM at least once a month due to distance.
I've read 131 pages of Mr. Hall's excellent "SSPX: The Defense." Please buy and read it, especially if you wonder whether the SSPX is schismatic. It's an easy read.
You needn't buy the books of any professional Catholic. Listening to the talks of the late Fr. Gregory Hesse, canon lawyer and Thomistic theology who explained, precisely and completely, the REAL status of the SSPX and the intentions of the late Archbishop. I suggest listening to Hesse before his talks are taken off-line. No Novus Ordo cleric of any rank can be trusted to give the full account and a fair analysis of the SSPX.

My father Gene Kennedy. Contacted ARCH BISHOP Marcel Lefevre in approximately 1978 and he and group of other people along with ARCH BISHOP Lefevre founded Corpus Christi, the SSPX Roman Catholic Church in Edmonds, Washington. when ARCH BISHOP Lefevre was in town he always stayed with my mother and father, he was a very holy man, he had permission from the current pope that in the event of his passing, he could have one BISHOP ordained to replace himself. He made the mistake of disobeying the pope and ordaining four bishops. This caused a rift between the Vatican and the SSPX. My husband and I were married in the SSPX in 1982. Then in 1996, while attending RCIA and becoming main stream Catholics, canon lawyers informed us that our marriage in the SSPX was invalid. The priest who performed our marriage, a father Loudenslager, had been defrocked, and we did not know it. So long story short, we ended up being able to have our marriage convalidated in the Catholic Church, and went on with our lives, raising our children in the main stream Catholic Church.
Jeff, Last week I was in a discussion with another Catholic who said the following, " SSPX mass is valid but is not licit due to the SSPX being in a canonical irregularity position. What are your thoughts?
There's nothing in Canon Law to support that claim. The SSPX has permission from the Holy Father directly to ordain and discipline priests, so why would the Mass be illicit?
@@TP-iv3os if a suspended priest offered a Mass, it would be valid but illicit. If a priest with faculties offered a Mass, but violated the rubrics, it would be valid but illicit. If a priest offered the Mass outside of a church or chapel without permission (such as on a beach), this would be valid but illicit.
At about the 1:14:00 mark Mr. Hall asks how one can be both in the Church and out the Church at the same time. I about busted my gut laughing. That IS the status of the SSPX. Or put another way, "irregular canonical status".
Salvation: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that salvation is by baptismal regeneration and is maintained through the Catholic sacraments unless a willful act of sin is committed that breaks the state of sanctifying grace. The Bible teaches that we are saved by grace which is received through simple faith (Ephesians 2:8-9), and that good works are the result of a change of the heart wrought in salvation (Ephesians 2:10; 2 Corinthians 5:17) and the fruit of that new life in Christ (John 15). Assurance of salvation: The Roman Catholic Church teaches that salvation cannot be guaranteed or assured. 1 John 5:13 states that the letter of 1 John was written for the purpose of assuring believers of the certainty of their salvation. Good Works: The Roman Catholic Church states that Christians are saved by meritorious works (beginning with baptism) and that salvation is maintained by good works (receiving the sacraments, confession of sin to a priest, etc.) The Bible states that Christians are saved by grace through faith, totally apart from works (Titus 3:5; Ephesians 2:8-9; Galatians 3:10-11; Romans 3:19-24).
People need to stop hailing John Salza as if he’s a final authority on the topic, especially priests. Quite a few people now have provided very logical conclusions and Salza simply rejects them. Salza seems to strive for some new understanding that is evidently unbeknownst to those who have the authority to speak up on the matter.
@@clintufford_777 I have posted the very same conclusion. Salza has about as much authority on this topic as another dagger wielding, flame throwing, assailant, Michael Voris, who guileless souls use as a benchmark on this complex matter.
@jimcvit You can have your SSPX marriage regarded as being in Catholic standing by your ordinary. We pray for the Pope in the canon of each Mass, the Orthodox do not. We are simply doing what our fathers did in 1968. We do not divide by ethnic groups like the Orthodox. We are Catholics who keep growing and growing while Novus Ordo churches keep being sold to Protestants and....Orthodox.
They should think he was a schismatic and heretic who died outside the friendship of the Church because He prioritized an abstract and fossilized conception of tradition over the actual living Bride of Christ who has spawned an army of heretics and schismatics who won’t admit the plain fact that if anyone is imbuing the spirit of Protestantism it’s the group that runs a parallel “church” while accusing the actual Bride of Christ of error, just as Luther once did, a man who also thought he was reclaiming the Church from falsehood. I’m saying it because I believe this is true, but I am not going to bother checking any of the replies. I am sure there are plenty who have ready made excuses, and I am sure it will go really well for you when you try them on the Son of God for why you spat in the eye of His Bride.
If the saintly Archbishop were alive, he'd laughed at the sheer absurdity of your wordy, but erroneous post. It describes a person who has nothing to do with who the Archbishop truly was. The mischaracterization of this future saint, is exceedingly way off the mark, and so inaccurate. It reveals not only an embarrassing ignorance but a biasness against one of the greatest Catholic figures of the 20th century.

Would a priest need the Bishop of the diocese to grant permission to say Mass for it to be licit?

It’s easy: the SSPX isn’t in full communion with the Catholic Church. Basically they’re like the Orthodox. Stay within the barque of St Peter.
