Brothers build boreal utopia of open-roof cube cabins in nature

  • On a piece of land purchased by their grandfather in Charlevoix, Quebec, Jonathan and Simon Galarneau have built a dozen small homes with big views of the Boreal forest. Some are converted shipping containers, others are tiny cubes, but they all have large windows cut into one side so despite the long, freezing winters, one can experience the outdoors from inside a cabin.
The brothers designed and built the structures, with no design degree, but inspired by a father who always built things and who’d dreamt of opening a campground on retirement. After his early death from cancer, Jonathan and Simon began to build their version of a campground. Starting with a bank loan for a “private home”, the first structure was a two story loft with a full wall of window creating passive heat all winter.
Today, the brothers have built over a dozen structures for their Repère Boréal nature resort and expect to have about 20 shelters by year’s end.

The kids look so happy in the nature. Such a beautiful childhood in such a beautiful pristine surroundings. Magic, just MAGIC! I'm getting emotional now remembering my childhood growing up in the city, albeit with a garden, you cannot compare to a magic forest with vast spaces of adjacent wilderness to explore and roam through freely! Absolutely amazing place to live! Thank you for the video, it was inspiring!

Having to leave to use the bathroom reminds me of the outhouse my dad always used when my family owned a log cabin in the Cascade mountains. It had been named "Kentucky" long before we owned the cabin. The rest of us (my mom and 2 siblings) were quite happy to use the indoor toilet instead. He just liked the novelty unless there was 8 or 10 feet of snow on the ground. Ah...good times in the trees in the mountains.

I know someone who would love the concept and could build his own version from scratch.

the fact that they made all of these intricate design, and they did not even finish architecture degree or something.... Sometimes education really sucks when you have the talent in you.... DANG IT.
