Chameleon shotgun house blends modern/vernacular on a budget

  • Inspired by the shotgun houses of the Gulf Coast, architect Zui Ng set out to create a modern version that could adapt to any lot. Calling it the Shotgun Chameleon, he built a prototype home for his family in Houston’s Fourth Ward (Freedmen’s Town).
Reflecting the buildings on both sides, it is clad in wood and metal, which are slatted to allow for light and breeze to enter while simultaneously allowing for privacy from the apartments next door.
The “Chameleon” in the title refers both to the home's adaptability to place as well as to moments in time. Ng designed it to divide into separate apartments to reflect his changing family. When he first moved in, he left the interior stairway open and his mother lived downstairs. Now the stairwell is closed and he, his wife and young daughter live in the 750-square-foot upstairs. The downstairs is rented out as a separate flat, now accessible via an exterior door.
“There’s different ways to live free. I’ve seen people, they move to the middle of nowhere and they move into a car or something to live free. That’s one way. Me and my wife, right now, we are kind of living free The rent for the bottom unit actually pays for the mortgage.”
In order to keep the build affordable, Ng (ZDES Studio) and his wife created most of the interior themselves: building cabinets and furniture (some hacked from IKEA and Home Depot), staining the plywood, designing and installing steel countertops from leftover siding, and even creating wooden, sliding pocket doors.
“With the digital age we lost a lot of ability that our ancestors used to have, with your hands… This house was built $180,000 less than what the contractor asked for so this is like another master degree for me. I learned to do subcontracting.”

The fact that he saved money by doing it himself and instead of getting in over his head he got creative and was flexible means he now lives in a beautiful home. A solid foundation, solid frame and flexible floor plan. It is a lesson many Americans can look to in building a home. Being a former home builder for over 10 years I was floored time and time again at how cheap and poorly designed most people build their house. Even after we would warn the homeowner their decisions would not last they wanted what their neighbors had. So we built it because they paid for it. I now remodel older homes and sell them after updating them and fixing so much of what shoddy developers build. I will never settle in a typical American home that's not older than 50 years. I will build my own home and use similar concepts this guy used. It is what I have thought the standard home has needed for the last 25 years I have been in construction.

Dixie Normous It's been gentrified. It was originally settled by freed slaves, but the land was stolen from them by the city of Houston through imminent domain for development. There was no development and the former owners/residents sought to return to their land. The city Houston refused to even sell it back to them. However, the city did sell the properties to white people. As the white people prospered and moved out of the neighborhood black people returned. Developers now wanted the land so the city of Houston and HISD helped out by closing schools, a library, and a park. The area has a historical designation, but that didn't stop looters from stealing the old wood off many of the houses. Several historical black churches there mysteriously caught fire with bulldozers being spotted parked nearby hours beforehand to clean up after suspiciously short arson investigations within a few hours. Those good church folks didn't care about the neighborhood because most of their families had left the area a long time ago. Eventually, the white (stolen) property owners started selling the land off to developers maybe around 20 years ago when the price was right. Now there's a new library, high school, and zillions of new homes plus restaurants & businesses. The new gentrified label for most of Freedmens Town and the Fourth Ward area (for whitewashing purposes) is Midtown.

Actually i've already subscribe your channel since long time and I like your content. But you should invest on gimbal because your video footage is unstable. Its unfortunate when the content is nice but makes the viewers dizzy. Good job keep your work.

Absolutely beautiful. An inspiring design that shows how less can more. Much more is this case. A triumph of ingenuity over vulgar expenditure.
