When I was a kid my older brother who had been to Vietnam loved to watch MASH. Being about 8 years old I didnt understand the humor but my brother would laugh quite a bit. I am now 56. My brother passed away 10 years ago. Sometime I will watch a rerun on purpose and imagine the sound of Jims laugh. Funny how t.v. shows invoke a memory.

I hope this doesn't become one more way to judge others who don't respond in the same way. Remember, alda not only has had a full and enriching life, he has a lot if support from others and enough money to provide opportunities many, if not most, people don't have.
Let's please not turn this into one more judgement.

Ah - I have to say that I don't entirely agree. The MASH TV show was copied from the MASH movie, which came out while the US was still embroiled in the Vietnam War. So they both were fairly plainly anti-war. By the time the series ended, it was smothering in it's own cleverness, and the anti-war message was more subdued. There were many in my parents generation who disliked MASH because of this.
In 1950, the North Koreans invaded the hapless South much like Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in 1991, and pushed the woefully unprepared US and South Korean troops around. The opposing armies didn't just get together and then the war "just happened;" the North Koreans had previously planned and prepared for the invasion; and they considered the South Koreans traitors, and these bad feelings caused the invaders to be cruel and bloodthirsty. The US had demilitarized a lot after WW2, and at the time was afflicted with the worst of the anti-communist frenzy; and their military response was delayed and feeble.
The Korean War is now called "The Forgotten War." It was the first time that the US didn't win undisputedly. In fact, it didn't really end until Stalin died, and the US military, which dislikes talking about strategy after not having one in Vietnam made them look so bad, plays this down. People dislike Truman for firing McArthur, who wanted to use tactical nukes on the Red Chinese; but Truman worried that use of nukes in the Far East might cause Stalin to invade Europe - and nobody could have opposed him.
At the time that MASH the TV show ended, war movies were not in fashion, and it took quite a while - until Saving Private Ryan - for the US to get back in touch with it's cultural love of things that go "KA-BOOM."

My Father's Father had Parkinson's. My Dad lived to 87 and never developed Parkinson's, but my older Sister developed a slight shake in her right hand in her early 40's. But it could also have been due to severe depression caused by a stressful marriage. She passed away a month after her 45th Birthday. I'm now soon to be 65 and sofar no signs, but that doesn't mean I'm out of the ballpark. My Grandfather lived into his 80's. Life is always going to throw us challenges and it's wonderful having Alan share with us his experiences and positive approach. Have a nice day and follow your bliss.

Parkinson's has so many varied symptoms and often goes undiagnosed. Many times, there is NO tremor and the shaking is more inward, inside the body, manifesting in painful muscles, gait imbalance and shuffling, arms don't swing with walking, expressionless face, soft speaking voice, small handwriting that trails off, big toe sticking up, nervousness, emotionality...lots of keys to look for. Eventually the brain shuts down organs and body functions begin to fail. It is a brutal disease, especially in the end stages. Staying active and limber helps, but as Mr. Alda says, each day is different. The primary Parkinson's medicine helps keep the levels in the brain at functioning levels which is why proper diagnosis is essential. Find a trustworthy neurologist and be optimistic and don't let it BE WHO YOU ARE.

spoly 13 Oh yes! You walk a fine line between the benefits and the risks of the meds, for sure! Parkinson's is a terrible condition that you, your worst enemy, do not wish!
True, it comes in two types, one is in the brain, and one has to do with the nerves!
I myself also have it out of the blue, no omens, nothing!
suddenly one day, now 11 months ago, I suddenly had to run, I could not stop my legs went on!
until I fell to the ground, and it was over ... (I immediately knew it was Parkinson's) my inmum system had been working badly for a few years ... (I was never sick) and suddenly just like that!
my blood count was 10 and I had to take Prednisone and antibiotics ...
the only thing bothering me is my calves that's all.
months ago I had tremor on the inside of the femur twice.
I swallow on principe no medicines, they are worse than the disease!
this night i have a bad night pain in my legs ... will go away.
I have a son-in-law who had something placed in his head ... (under local anesthetic, with Parkinson's, you should not have a complete anesthetic.)
my short term memory has taken a hit, and I have gentle taps on my face, hands and stomach ... sometimes not every day, had a CT scan, had another MRI, and a DAT scan, but with this terrible Covid I stay inside, really don't go outside.
i wish all the people affected by this terrible monster, strength, and try it without drugs, my neurologist was very satisfied.
      strength all

It's interesting to watch. In his facial expressions and movements he's aged 20 years in the past 3, probably due to Parkinson's. He used to have very active mimicry, which is very minimal now. And at first that gave me the impression that his mind was slower too. But then he speeds up his speech and if you close your eyes there's no hint of any slowing down. I hope he gets to enjoy his work and life in general for as long as is comfortable, and that he can gracefully exit the stage when he's ready.

What an amazing man with an amazing attitude! I watched many of the "Scientific American Frontiers" and how much he was so involved and fascinated by many of the stories. Especially the medical stuff that involved people.

Parkinson's for me is like spinning the "Wheel of misfortune" and winning every morning.
He is correct, the disease is extremely dynamic with something new arriving daily.
STAY ACTIVE.....YOU GO STAGNANT, ITS GAME OVER!
