    Considering this the the motorcycle equivalent of racing a Range Rover against a Lamborghini, the R1200GS is quite an impressive machine on the track! I would be interested to see a run with the Gear Shift Assist Pro option.

    • @miragegp
      @miragegp  10 років тому +4

      It wouldn't change things much...perhaps with better tyres and shift assist things would be a tad closer but Ducati is just too strong.

      A Range Rover?
      I don’t know about that. I’d call it a lifted 911 vs a Lamborghini. The GS is such a fast bike to 100

  • @emondrag
    @emondrag 10 років тому +7

    That was beyond awesome! I watched the whole thing intensely. You really held your own and gave it a true 10/10. The guy on the Panigale was really leaning and scraping knees on corners and he had a 75hp advantage over you.
    That was a lot of fun man!
    Thanks for posting, what a race!

    I did the exact same thing you did. Took my GS on the track and "raced" superbikes. The GS holds its own for sure, but it's not a match - like you point out. In straights and under heavy braking, the GS can't keep up.

    Another epic ride by the amazingly impressive MirageGP. As a GS rider, this is my favorite so far and defines what a GS is capable of in the right hands.This video should be required viewing by GS riders and nothing but praise should be given to Mirage GP for riding this bike flat out. I do not know anybody that could keep pace, on the "Big, Heavy & Bulky GS", with a skilled rider on a pure sportbike such as the Ducati 1199 Panigale. A GS passing a Panigale on a racetrack makes this the best GS video I have seen to date. I can't wait to see more of Mirage GP videos and I most importantly can't wait to show my Suburban "Adventure" rider buddies!

    Love this video dude!! Nice riding skills 👍👍🏁🏁 I’ve just ordered the new 1250Gsa hp so excited to get out on it! I’ve had a 2011 which I really loved but it was lacking a bit in the twisties here in Spain, I feel 2 generations later it will be good 🤪. I’ve watched your crash video as well.. scary stuff!! And hope your recovery is going well?🍀🍀 strange the way it just went.. maybe rear shock getting older and not holding the contact good.. it’ll probably stay with guesses of what happened.. you can’t blame yourself because your riding is really good 👍 stay safe and good luck!. Regards Dennis

      Dennis, thank you very much! Recovery is picking up, I should be able to ride this year, thinking KTM perhaps? I am working on couple happier videos, have some nice footage from road trip I did some time ago. When do you expect delivery of 1250?

    • @On2WheelswithDennis
      @On2WheelswithDennis 6 років тому

      That’s great news!! Getting back on track 🍀🍀 , delivery time here on this moment is 6 to 10 weeks 😱😱 hoping to have mine end of February, I have ordered the Hp with the brushed aluminum tank 😍😍 looks really good in the flesh!, I’ll post a video when I pick it up! And yep I like the 1290S adventure Ktm a lot as well!! But I think the Bmw is a bit more all round and more comfortable and with the new engine it really gives a lot more lowdown torque! Looking forward to your videos! Regards Dennis

      I ride GS as well now.

    • @emondrag
      @emondrag 10 років тому

      miragegp How can I explain this... The K12R is raw power. No traction control, so you can easily get in trouble. The thing is also very heavy, and needed a lot of modding to make it rideable (all in i-BMW.com). Even so, the ride is punishing, and it does' like turning.
      The GS, has better fueling, and being a two cylinder, the power is deliver is fun pulses. Some people call it tractable (or tractor-like), but the power delivery is smooth and predictable (wish it was more). The bike so incredibly agile, it belies its weight (actually weighs less than the KR). It's so versatile as well.
      I don't know. I have all my bikes (K12R, K12LT, and not the R12GS). Each does something different for me... but I've been lusting for a GS for a long time. All I can say is wow! This bike is friendly!
      I love the GS!

    • @miragegp
      @miragegp  10 років тому

      Eyvind Mondragon That's the beauty of it. It's versatile, it handles, doesn't have any of the issues that K1200/1300 had - because it's their bestseller BMW is quick to sort whatever the problem is.
      I just bought 2015 GS LC and love it. Mind you...there is a chance I get S1000RR as well. Waiting to see what RS and XR will be like first. I think XR would probably be perfect bike for me.

    Great riding. Matching the Pani rider for corner speed and out-braking them every time. Still amazing to see how the Pani just blitzes the straights though, even from a pretty light bike with 125hp. Odd to think that as a track bike, the Pani still needs the right track to get away from something that 95% of the time is going to be way way more usable on public roads. And huge talent still counts for so much!

      You can do anything with it, really. I used to ride superbikes, mostly breakfast runs. Issue was that aircooled GS was not "fast enough". With LC version I have decided to bite the bullet. Certainly, you're not leading superbikes pack on it, but it's not slow either. Then I did some serious touring with it...it's perfect. Range, comfort, luggage capacity. Now I'm discovering GS' off road capabilities, it's amazing. I will never ever ride anything else.

    • @johnnyflies6

      Impressive stuff. The skill is riding what you've got to its capabilities.( and not throwing it up the road;))
      Got a be close on the big gs so impressive stuff.
      Panigale should kick the gs ass on track and as you know,, that's not a criticism of your riding,,, quite the opposite. Pani rider not so good but no matter I'm sure he's enjoying himself and that's what's important. Good vid

    You, miragegp, have huge balls and your very good too. It took a long straight for the Ducati to take you, and not for long.
    I can imagine what it's like. I was racing a Porsche 918 in a Bentley Mulsanne today, as one does, and it was the same. I was the better driver in a very heavy beast and he was good and in a crazy fast sports car. It takes courage.

      Hey Peter, thanks for the compliment. I'd love to go for a spin in one of those exotics...did M5's and M6's, older 997 911Turbo...
      Now, to business, regarding GS(A). Try both - I bought GSA first and after a year of not being sure it's the best bike for me, traded for GS. And guess what, that's it. No other bike interests me. You can have SO MUCH fun of it, on and off road...it's fast when you want it to be, you can ride it at walking pace without a problem, it does gravel as good as tar, if you're more adventurous, it does some crazy stuff off road too (but you must be ready to fall now and then, which I'm not). In short, ride them both, back to back and pull the trigger. They are pure magic !!!

      miragegp its just a lot of top heavy dual sport to throw around a track with massive lean angle with them fat lumps of donk hanging over the sides
      i have a 650 dakar and i don't think i will ever get her near that .... plus don't have the power or brake to go no where near that hard

    • @miragegp
      @miragegp  9 років тому

      Bike is easy to ride at fast pace. But when you start pushing, that's when the frame and suspension start to complain... You can ride "over" that but it's difficult to figure out how far are you from front washing out. Then I sit on S1000RR for instance and as hard as I dare to push, bike just says - c'mob, give me more. So...don't stress...650 is probably less capable than 1200... so no point to try to be a hero. Rider matters but so does the hardware underneath.

    • @amh007dude
      @amh007dude 9 років тому

      far from stressed let me assure you .. i am the slowest of my mates with bikes had a good off a few years ago reminding me that i anit made of steel ... plus i haven't been putting the time to get back to were i was and i don't know if i ever will.
      the 1200 does amaze me at what a crazy machine it is for its height and weight .. that boxer down low must make a hell of a difference i at times and in the future will ride hard trails for such a heavy bike and i know i will never want such a big machine like the 1200 ........ as for a s1000rr maybe i would ride one on the track since that's the only place you can use it .
      riding it over 50% of what it has for road use and you will get locked up or run over by making someone panic...

    • @miragegp
      @miragegp  9 років тому

      amh007dude I was referring to track riding on S1000RR. On public roads it's downright scary. I have few rides in this channel - have a look. And please don't complain about the speeds....it's sports bike, difficult to ride slow :-)I suggest, if you're still willing to ride and try to improve - do it one step at the time - like 1% over your ability....push...just a little bit...

      +miragegp Haha! My first two BMWs were ex demo machines, where I got back from the test ride and said, "I want it!"
      My R1200RS was my first brand new one, though.
      I'd love to take it to the track, but just can't afford to risk it, which is why I have a 2001 model GSXR 1000 track-dedicated machine. With a new(ish) lightie in the house, though, I can't afford to get out on it as much as I would like. Track days here in the UK are SOOOOO expensive compared to in SA.
      Incidentally, my first ever track day was on my mate's dad's K1300GT at Zwartkops, where I must have been going round like a granny. I'm definitely a bit quicker these days (but still learning)

    • @miragegp
      @miragegp  9 років тому

      If you have track bike then there is no point to push and risk with new machine. Maybe you can do few laps just to see how it feels like but that's about all. Also, track riding is not that healthy for your driveshaft (constant up/downshifts). K1300GT is big and heavy for the track but it can hustle. Have you seen my video with K1600 at Zwartkops ?

    Hey great video - surprising that such a big ol' beast can keep up with the lightweight stuff - was that an 899 or 1199 do you know? I'd love to take my GS on a track sometime, how shot were the tyres after you'd finished??? Duly subbed :-) Cheers - TMF

    Brilliant Video! Outstanding in all aspects, even while pushing to the very limit of your machine and it's set up. Courteous passing and a smooth, patient yet relentless chase. Much respect for you and your machine. Truly well done! Perhaps in future vids how about including a brief "walk around" of the bike, clearly showing the model of bike, it's configuration and how it's rotors and tires look just as it came in off the last lap. It would be neat to see the details, save you some repeat questions and silence the doubters. It will also give me an idea of exactly which bike & rider combo I need to watch for approaching in my mirrors!!! Lol. Speed on Brother!

    This video is testimony that you know what you're doing and there can be no question that your GS crash was rider error! I'm still wondering what the hell happened with that. It is a mystery. (Unless, it was something as simple as a slippery section of road / rear slip........but your friends went through that corner on a similar-ish line without any issues). I have a 2017 GS and am (kind of) excited about the new 1250 GS and GSA, but I would feel a lot better if we could identify what failed here. Get well soon dude!

    • @miragegp

      The guy riding the Pannigale was absolutely terrible & making the GS rider/bike looking great. The Ducatl rider was all wrong with his lines going into corners. I'm guessing he is a novice track rider. Put the Ducati 1199 in my hands and I'll show you how it rides....P.S. - I own a 1299 Pannigale + Ducati Streetfighter 848 + BMW S1000XR....Anyone who talks up the GS in the comments section is simply dreaming if they honestly think the tractor is a sports bike dressed in adventure clothing! Simple!!!

    Very nice ride on your "Big Beemer" you have good driving skills, few people will dare to push this versatile beast to this edge on track. This vid shows clearly how important the driver is to perform well with a motorcycle. If the Panigale driver his driving skills would even come close to yours, he would be much faster then the Beemer :) No criticism on the Big Beemer's though, it is indeed remarkable they can perform this well on track. I am actually thinking about selling my KTM sportsbike for a GS1200 (I have an R1 for the track to keep in touch with the adrenaline levels from time to time:) ) Keep up the good work and nice vids!

    Two years ago in August I rode at Montmelo, a high speed circuit, and my Metzeler Tourance Next tires melted on the edges. I was sliding all over the place, suspecting the rubber is softer at the edges of these tires and cooks fast.

    The GS is a bike that seems to utterly defy the laws of physics. This only goes to show how fast these bikes can be. In the real world on the road the broad powerband combined with its outrageous cornering ability means it can humble many bikes that are much faster on paper, because very few riders are capable of keeping a sports bike in the powerband or using the limits of braking and cornering that would give the bike the edge over the GS. In comparison the GS is much easier to ride fast.

    • @miragegp
      @miragegp  6 років тому

      I agree but not completely. GS is easy to ride fast but if you know how to paddle sports bike, GS cannot keep up. Saying that, on the road, riding fast but not insanely fast, I'd ride GS each and every time. After the accident I had, however, I'm thinking about different brands as replacement bike or possibly new 1250 GS when it comes out, depending on my recovery which will take a while.

      The panigale rider is just not very skilled., for anyone that has doubts regarding that.
      The GS is a land barge in comparison, but a decent rider is more than enough to get a GS to keep up on a small-ish track, which this was.
