  • SNAKE CORPS - Calling You
The Snake Corps were an indie music group based in London, England during the 1980s and 1990s.
Formed in 1984, from the ashes of the (then) broken-up Sad Lovers & Giants, Tristan Garel-Funk and Nigel Pollard conceived the band, but Pollard left prior to recording the first album. Vocalist Marc Lewis responded to an advert in Melody Maker and shared a flat with Garel-Funk, the pair becoming the band's two ever-present members.
The music was too relaxed and understated to appeal to a mass-market. Not unlike Sad Lovers & Giants before them, they focused on creating dreamy, filmic soundscapes and at least partly, discarded the post-punk influences that shackled many of their contemporaries. Consequently, the band found that the European market was more aligned to their musical style and they toured abroad extensively, receiving good support wherever they went.
Distancing themselves from Britain and shunning even a regular UK tour meant that the regular indie labels were largely uninterested. However, Midnight Music, who had been the home of early SL&G, signed the band and were able to give them the artistic freedom they craved. Unfortunately, this laissez-faire approach extended to most of the company's dealings and ultimately hastened their demise. In the wake of a messy collapse, the band found that they were not only label-less, but their publishing rights had transferred to another company without any involvement or agreement from the band members. Not surprisingly, they decided to call it a day.
A new album was already recorded, but this did not surface for some years, eventually appearing on the small Ophidian label, an offshoot of Rotator Records, thanks to a friend of Garel-Funk. The word Ophidian can mean 'snake-like'.

The best thing about youtube is that good but obscure bands, like Snake Corps, get a chance to be discovered and appreciated.

This was a great song! I used to be a DJ on college radio, and I loved these guys. This song actually made it onto the playlist of the only alternative radio station in NY. I got so stoked when I heard them play it.

A Tristan Garel-Funk trademark: keeping a major third (here he alternates it with the sus4) while the bass goes to the b6. Here it's in the chorus. The verse plays with a similar pattern - the bass starts on the b6, while the keyboard is repeating b7 -1-♮3 - 1 to same effect. The chorus of Snake Corp's 'Painted Ocean' has this 'wrong' sonority again at the end of the phrases. Extreme trivia: Lotion's first single 'Tear' (as in rip, not weep) plays with the same effect in the verse.

***** I think that's 1 of the things I especially love about this band... all the interesting, colorful chord changes!!! It just strikes something inside.

Midnight Music's roster was so good.. and very original. Good read on this.. The fact that they let the artists have control was great for the artists, not necessarily the best to garner mass appeal , and that's across the board. not singling one band out.. From Pop Guns to Les infants terribles, to The Essence, The Pop Guns and CornDollies, to name a few , they are very untainted by mainstream production..i still love to pop in the Corn Dollies cd.. I consider Snake Corps , SLAG and The Essence to be the flagships of that label. Still miss them days..
