Storyline:
The last eighteen years in the life of Jesse James, showing his home life in Missouri, his experiences with Quantrill's raiders, his career of banditry with his brother Frank and the Younger brothers, and his attempt to lead a peaceful life after the disastrous attempt to rob the bank at Northfield, Minn.
Review:
While there is the legend and the truth about Jesse James and his gang, this film, in which the title strongly implies a truthful account, perpetuates the legend of a man who was of the people and who robbed banks that grew rich at their suffering. Is there truth to the legend, then? Google it and find out. The film itself is a solid piece of work from director Nicholas Ray, who, another poster has written, disowned it since the studio forced him to follow a familiar and hokey flashback style. However, even that works out OK, as the film starts with James's biggest failure, the notorious Northfield Minnesota bank robbery fiasco, which it revisits later on to show how the gang was trapped and picked off by strategically placed sharpshooters. The acting is not that great, a factor that seems to be related to the script, but the story itself moves along and has many good scenes from the flashbacks, especially when Jame's neighbor whips him with his belt, and when preacher John Carradine baptizes Jesse and girlfriend Hope Lange on the banks of a river. The film includes some interesting "facts" (?) about the Northfield raid, one of which, the Swedish townsperson wanting to buy one of the gang's horses, made it into Walter Hill's The Long Riders. And the Ford brothers' betrayal is very well done and seemed to have been copied in the Brad Pitt film. Frank Gorshin was an excellent choice to play one of the Ford's. The portrayal of the Fords of hanging around in the background, but present nonetheless, adds a lot for the viewer who knows this story already. As Jesse, Robert Wagner wasn't great, but definitely up to the task. Jesse James is a legend, no matter what the real truth is about him. Written by RanchoTuVu.

Anyone recognize Cole Younger? The late, great, Alan Hale, otherwise know as, The Skipper!
or Casey Jones
God Bless the James Brother's. Mom too. Chi Town loves outlaw's.
The scene where Jesse and Frank ride their horses through the large window of the mercantile store during the Northfield raid was stock footage from the 1939 film Jesse James starring Tyrone Power as Jesse and Henry Fonda as Frank.
and the glass was made with clear candy.
Truth is , the law drew first blood, war was over , governments were buying up houses land , if you refused you were shot or burned down, well they shot his family first , so Billy just went after them, the rest you know. But bottom line is the law drew first blood over greed for land. 😊
Frank and Jesse rode with the quantrill raiders before they robbed banks & trains, this Northfield robbery was the beginning of the end.,the youngers got shot up and arrested.,The James boys escape from Minnesota back to Missouri on horseback was quite a feat .
Jesse James was a 100% true legend and don't forget about Ned Kelly and the Kelly Gang that's also a 100% true and legend from Perth WA.
the O'Kelly's were kin too us O'Dwyer wild White maori's.
If I recall correctlyJim.& Cole tried to talk Bob out of going to Northfield with Jess n Frank.Only going along with it because Bob refused to back down.Later,he blamed himself for not listening to them & said had they not stayed with him after their injuries, they would not have been taken.Bob died in prison,Jim commited suicide after losing his sweetheart & being exiled in Minnesota after their parole.John was lost in '74.Cole & Frank lived till 1914 & 1915respectively.I believe Frank's son was in the First WW.I have a cd of music from the time, played on Jim's violin. Its lovely that it was restored.I don't know where it is though.Unfortunatly.Y have they brought imaginary riders into this movie? They were going to use another town but Jess thought he'd been recognized & they moved on to meet their karma. The James Boys,3 Youngers, Bill Chadwell who knew the area,Charlie Pitts...
You forgot Clell Miller. He and Bill Chadwell, mistakenly called Stiles, were killed in the streets. Charlie Pitts stayed with the Youngers and died before the Youngers were captured. Frank James shot the bank manager, not Jesse. Jesse never went inside the bank. The bank vault wasn’t even locked, but the robbers never checked it.
I always loved the Jesse James history and I grew up in a small town he used to visit but the end is heartbreaking
yes i miss grap grap
@@ericasylvestre the part ahh like on thier history is when they had audacity too wear yankee blue uniforms too do raids behind the Konfederate lines.- Sherman vacation and the sectret raid too kill abe lincoln in 65
The best version of the James-Younger story is "The Long Riders" which uses the same family dynamics of the gang with actors...James and Stacey Keach as the James brothers. David, Keith and Robert Carradine play the Youngers. Dennis and Randy Quaid play the Millers and the Guest brothers portray Bob and Charlie Ford. The soundtrack is provided by Ry Cooder. More historically accurate than other attempts to tell the story.
Allan McMillian says long riders best version and most accurate...r u crazy the ford's asked to join gang before Northfield which happened in September 1876
Ford especially Bob would of been 13 or 14. And Frank turns himself in so he can bury his brother???, really he turned himself in 3 yrs later. U know nothing
Uh, no.
Allan MacMilian:Soz,cannot agree. The idea of bros playing bros was a good one.But the film was full of inaccuracies.
Love the opening blurb "As any man could testify" the fact everyone from that time was dead at the time they made this move, it would be hard for anyone who knew the actual story to testify
Slavery wasnt an issue in the 1776 revolutionary war

Amazing story!thank you for sharing us the story of jesse james.
" no horse's were hurt during the opening cliff jumping scene of this movie " 🤣🤣🤣🤣💪💪
Why are you laughing?🤔
I wish I could have been apart of the James gang
My name is Jesse James so this really fascinated me lol
What a coward to shoot a man when his backed turned
Jesse James still remains a hero to many.
Rebel Yell and Frank and Cole Younger. shot 26 times.
Very wish I was born back then

@suzane
personally, I would not prefer any era or any location without indoor plumbing...
The Union Forces still seem heroic to many, too... yet their viciousness in the name of freedom
eclipsed the violence of the James Brothers by an infinite quantum leap into darkness...
Minnesota is just like Shawal valley in North Wazirastan and less dangerous.
I remember how this movie was described in TV Guide . After the title the description read " Not really but there's more fact than usual."
Awesome old western movie. 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Interesting scene water baptism
Doesn't save people!
the ending song to this movie is priceless ! anyone know who that is ?
I also have been wondering who sang the ending ballad and I checked the cast and couldn't seem to find him. I have googled singer of ending ballad and nothing.

A great biography thanks 🤠
Should have never drop his guard and turn his back
After that Minnesota raid Jesse laid low in Nashville for three years then formed another gang. He ran rampant until that so called friend of his did him in the back. This version was bloodless.
Plus de films westerns en français s'il vous plaît. Merci.

American Westerns, too 👍
Was it a religious Element to the story? I never knew
I'm now convinced not to try to rob a bank in Minnesota and try to get away on horseback.
Always loved the song at the end 1:31:15
I love the song at the end too. It just popped into my head the other day and I had to find the movie again so I could hear it.
mistake: Jesse would have never celebrated 4th of July, as he is dreaming of with his new wife/new house
Gud.Heart touching movie.

The white Team Rocket duo might be named after Jesse James
I saw nanny of this story by different actor's one of them Brad Pitt &
Yasmine Nazarene:The one with the extra long title.Yes,I have it.But all the films stray from the truth. This one was ok,save Robert Wagner was a bit old to play Jess as a farm boy. There r a lot of inaccuracies.Same as Young Guns.I enjoy them yet cannot understand why movie makers embroider.Surely if someone is interesting enough to make a film about them, then don't make things up.Do wonder if the James&Younger Boys&The Regulators would've recognised themselves? The Youngers weren't related btw but calling someone cousin was often a friendly term in use at that time.Thought Alan Hale portrayed Cole v well.
Hello..the relationship between brothers..????
Frank was the elder brother and survived into the 1900's i believe.

Did Jessy James shot people on a train.
Jesse James was a back shooter he never once stood man to man. He reminds me of little Doc Holliday he another back shooter Now look at them both dead and rotten all most for getting. This why Jesse give his name of Mr Howard because he new he was a little coward. This the true story of little coward Mr Howard
What were the years? Was it a civil war era?
On June 13, 1866, in Jackson County, Missouri, the gang freed two jailed members of Quantrill's gang, killing the jailer in the effort. Historians believe that the James brothers were indeed involved in this crime.
