This side theme with Ellie and July is a strange story. But it’s very interesting how she reminds me of my biological mother and many other women I’ve known. And she did wind up in deep trouble. No spoiler intended.

You can stack up a couple of hundred academy award-winning films, but not even come close to the richness of superb character acting in this fine series. Watching Duval and Jones prickly friendship is a bona fide pleasure. Pure gold. OMG I can’t begin to tell you how many times a day I quote this movie!!My dad knows it and so does my cousin. We have a small dairy farm in northeast Wisconsin. Ironically, right now, we have a cow named Maggie! 😉 Everytime a storm rolls in I say “well, this is where we find out if we were meant to be Cowboys.” The list goes on and on and on - an amazing movie. When Woodrow carves the sign for Deetz, it always chokes me up. Everything he says could be said about my grandfather. I was lucky enough to farm with him every day of my life for 43 years. He passed away at age 95! And when they want to go and see all the clear land before it gets built up with churches & School houses - I can relate. It makes me sad to see farmland sold and turned into a suburb. And ironically, I do hate money even more than I hate fun lol.

There are 3 other books by McMurtry with these characters, all of them excellent. 2 are about Gus and Call when they were younger, and one takes place after LD and tells a story about Call, Pea Eye and others from this series. All of them are fantastic books, and I highly recommend them all. Enjoy!

Lonesome Dove is without a doubt the best western film made. I'll admit The Searchers w/John Wayne, Tombstone w/Kirk Russel, Open Range w/Kevin Costner, High Noon w/Gary Cooper...and a few more are very good. However, Lonesome Dove is by far the best.
