E13 - Skip Schumaker Ejected During Pitching Change Chaos & Why Laz Diaz Didn't Start Pitch Clock

  • HP Umpire Laz Diaz ejected Marlins manager Skip Schumaker for arguing a pitch clock violation no-call when San Francisco sent the wrong pitcher, lefty Tyler Rogers, onto the field when manager Bob Melvin wanted righty Camilo Doval instead. Let's talk about pitch timer & substitution rules. Report: www.closecalls...

Although Official Baseball Rule 5.10(j) pertains to substitutions and states a substitute pitcher is not considered into the game until said pitcher takes their place on the pitcher's plate (rubber), it's the pitch clock rules that really riled up Schumaker and his ball club.
According to the timer rules for pitching changes and inning breaks, the clock starts when the umpire signals to the bullpen that there is a pitching change...but then resets back to two minutes (if it's under two minutes) when the substitute pitcher steps onto the warning track.
In this case, due to the confusion, the correct Giants pitcher Doval didn't step onto the warning track for quite some time after the initial call to the bullpen, so the clock operator in Miami simply held the timer at two minutes, knowing it would be reset to 2:00 as soon as Doval stepped on the track.
Schumaker wanted a pitch clock violation and automatic ball called against San Francisco for this delay, but the rules do not allow for a violation in this situation, provided that Doval is ready to play according to the prescribed time limits...that start not when the umpire signals the bullpen that a new pitcher is on the way, but upon said new pitcher stepping onto the warning track-all that "wasted" time was simply reset to 2:00 pursuant to the warning track reset rule.

You did a good job explaining the rule, but you should also include something regarding what Schumaker was claiming. If his pitcher was called for a ball in a similar situation, what made that situation different from this one? Because without context for that other game, you have to take him at his word, and then it just sounds like arbitrary enforcement of rules, which is never a good look.

MLB just needs to fix the rule and say as soon as the first pitcher comes out that's the end. It's the defensive team's job to have the right pitcher come out. You don't get rewarded for being "confused".. intentionally or otherwise.
Better yet, set a 2:30 timer (or whatever) as soon as the manager comes out of the dugout. Don't have any rules about who comes out of the bullpen when.

Seconds time I've seen a snafu on getting a reliever from the bullpen due to arm signal of the manager. Both ended with an ejection. The Mariners were in Boston and John McNamera the bench coach is covering for whatever manager was at a their kids graduation or whatever. John uses the wrong arm to signal for a reliever and was "forced" to bring in a lefty when only a rightly was out there. He insisted that it was just a brainfart and he wasn't even thinking about arm, just that he had one guy warming up and wanted to use him. John throws a solid hissy fit on the field and gets dumped. Everyone in attendance was entertained.

Have you every heard of Jackie Robinson? He was the first African American baseball player in MLB in the 20th C. and debuted on 4/15/47. Baseball retired his number in the 2000s throughout the league. Ken Griffey Jr. as a tribute requested to wear #42 on a 4/15 a year or two later. Now everyone wears 42 on 4/15, even the umpires (Edit: Umpires briefly participated, but no longer do.
