This is the best tutorial I've come across, a few notes: when you move something, you need to select a point of reference first, then move it to where you want that exact point to be. Also, when tapering the legs of the table, you need to select the point on the corner and bring that in. I'm looking forward to learning through the next 29 days. Thank you for your instruction!
One of the most important things you can tell somebody is to hit the spacebar to go back to the arrow so you can select things. Just take 20 seconds to explain that would’ve helped me tremendously as this is the first time I ever used sketch up.
thank you for that info!
Helpful thank you
Exactly.
omg its been so frustrating to have to reselect it every time. thank you!
Exactly! Dude just got me confused from the beginning
The greatest sketchup guru. God bless you 🙏🏻
Thanks!
Muito obrigado! Primeiro dia completo com sucesso!
Amazing content. Thank you very much. I am a full time carer to my disabled wife and think 3D modelling will help me to unwind from tough days. I am a new woodworker and plan to design and build useful stuff.
Thank you - really glad I've been able to help you out a bit! :)
Your usage of direct instructional language was superb. thank you. 😊
This is amazing as fresh, I am going for 30 days, i learned a lot in just 4 videos. 👍🏻✨
OMG So many useful tips here. Who knew CTRL key gave so much more control! I can feel the future fury abating already. Amazing. Thank you.
This is great content, thank you! Regarding the move tool, is there a way to snap the table legs to the offset portion of the table when you move it along the X axis, to make sure it is properly aligned? When I zoomed in, I detected a small overlap and had to go back and redo the table leg move. Is there a snapping feature in Sketchup, or perhaps a plugin that accomplishes this - just to make sure the alignment is perfect, with no gaps or overlaps?
Thanks! I will come back to this.
I'm a high school Engineering teacher and I use your videos a lot, been using them for years now. When my students watch these tutorials (with headphones on) its always fun to hear them all say "What's up guys! Thank you so much for all your hard work.
Awesome! Really glad I've been able to help a bit! :)
ITS REALLY YOU MR JOHNSON
Thank you so much for this! God bless you
Thanks for your reply. Your tutorials are amazing and great They help me realising how great is this software for cabinet design.
Thank you Justin for this excellent refresher!

This is perfect SketchUp teaching please make more videos like this ( i will always follow you )
Will do! :)
appreciate your video. from South Korea.
GREAT Stuff !!! thanks.
👍
Thank you so much
THANK YOU SO MUCH
I learned so much just from this video
how do i place the table legs EXACTLY up against the skirt? is there a snap to guide i need to enable?
Hey Justin enjoying the series thus far, One question if possible and that would also pertain to those using the free version . Could you go over the application setting that you have set for this series, ie. the template being used, model info settings and or any setting that you will be using and that will make modeling a faster easier workflow.
I'm trying to figure out a "day 0" video that would have some of this information to help people get started
Dude, I appreciate the information, and I'm hanging in there because I've played with Sketchup a little before, but there's no way in hell I would have been able to keep up with you if I haven't. You're flying through without even explaining basics like how to open the program, how to erase the guy standing there, how to orient the page, etc. I really am appreciative of your time, but wasn't this supposed to be day one? Maybe this is day one for people who have already used Sketchup? I have to have missed something somewhere, but if I haven't, there has to be a ton of people who dropped off that played the video hoping to learn the program from the beginning.
Try a basic shapes video first; I think it will help launch you quicker into this series (they usually have an orientation to controls for the free version). Also, you've probably already figured it out by now, but you can click on the figure on the opening page and delete it. Happy Sketching!
I subscribed, liked and commented. Keep up the good work.
The trifecta! :)
Thanks for this💙
No problem 😊
You are a great teacher👍🏿
Thank you! 😃
Super tutorial and very well explained. I wish I took it to months ago instead of trying to find all the shortkeys by trying.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Justin, great video and helpful. I'm having trouble moving the table leg from one side of the table to another. I've watched this part very carefully, but to no avail. It won't more to put it simply. Could it be because I'm using the Pro version of SketchUp?
I really like your teaching method plz make more videos like this I always follow you thanks dear sir
👍
Nice tutorial
Thanks a lot Justin sir
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for your content, it's very helpful. I'm a Mac OS user, and I'm trying to find the best Mac compatible trackball (preferable, I'm a trackball guy) or mouse to provide the best functionality in Sketchup. Any suggestions? Thank you!
Sorry, I really don't know anything about Macs or the mice that work with them. In general something with two buttons and a clickable scroll wheel should do what you want
heyy i wanna ask about, how to get extention for makee some organic product in sketchup ?cuz when i saw youtube to making curve pattern 3d idk how to do that cuz the extention in sketch up that you have, doesn't works in my sketch up extention toolbar.thank you hope you read my comment. i need help
This is good for someone who has already messed around with Sketchup. This is horrible if you've never used it. It seems to be par for the course as no one understands the concept of a step by step demonstration. You may be starting on Day 1, but it's later on in the morning. You need to start at the BEGINNING!
Is this really free? wow.. Thanks for the great course.
Yes, it is!
thanks
thanks for share❤
Thanks for watching!
thanks.. keep going
29 days to go!
@@Thesketchupessentials iam waiting
and again thanks for this
No worries!
It's a little confusing when you say the "control key" because they're opposites from Windows to Mac. I'm using Mac and sometimes its even the "Option" key instead. Is there some documentation as to which is which in particular situations? Love the videos, it's just s ton of rewinding when I get those keys wrong and then I'm on the video window instead when I make the change because I had to rewind it! LOL Also I'm in Sketchup 2022. Could that be the difference?
Is this only in inches? Can it be set for centimetres?
Hi I’m trying to follow your 30 days which I must say is a fantastic thing to do, but I’m failing on the 1st day as I can work out why I can’t type in the measurements, have I not set something???
ok thx!!!
i cant offset the apron to make a thickness, what tool to use?
After creating face how you grab that edges on 4:50 because last tool you told us to use was rectangle and that you doing with another tool. That was On edge offset tool.
My mouse seems a little Jenky. The scroll wheel is the issue. The visual amount of scroll doesn’t seem to match the amount I’m moving the wheel. Any advice on settings? Newer Mac Pro with a Logitech M705 mouse.
This seems like something that needs to be adjusted in your actual mouse settings - you should be able to adjust your scroll speed there
when I try to select the leg to duplicate it, it selects the apron and table top too. Additionally, when i select the apron to group it as well, it tries to group it with the table top. selecting 6 faces individually (at a minimum) to group is cumbersome.
Something in the free UI is different from version to version. sketchup is constantly changing things, which is both good (for making improvements) and bad ( for learning across versions, removing features)
Hello ! I am a newcomer trying to learn SketchUp for Shop but I am a littel bit confused when watching The first clip of your series for creating a table. At the 4 minutes 50 second frame, you are showing how to offset inward the rectangle to give the thickness to your apron, but you do not show what tool you used for that. It looks easy the create an inner rectangle, but cant find the way to do it as you do. It would be nice that in your presentation you give, whenever required, an explanation of which tool you used, You did it in many occasions and this was great, but in this particular scene, I missed that. Could you help me giving this precision ?
Tap the "F" key and it'll activate the offset tool. Thanks!
tqsm
👍
hello, im a newcomer i get trouble on how to move a selected group up and down. what key do you activate?
I apologize for being so slow but I am trying to repeat the entire day 1 exercise and I am having a great deal of trouble creating the ribbon. Once the rectangle is created do you move the cursor to any edge of the rectangle and then type f for offset and then move inward and then type 3/4"?
Once the rectangle was created he used the offset tool (F) to create the ribbon.
Thank u
No problem!
Hi SketschupEssentials, when I try to add a group (5:50 seconds) it selects everything instead of only the middle square. How do I change this? thanks.
edit: i notice when I double click the inner square , it does work. But I cannot do it the way as you showed in the video.
when you click to move and copy if you don't click on the corner of the piece you are trying to move to the opposing corner it will only snap on one axis. I was steaming until I figured this out. not mentioned almost anywhere online
For the table leg scaling at the ending while holding the cltr button i couldn't type the measurement needed why?
Can you do a learn V Ray in 30 days as well?
Love you and subscribe your channel
Thanks!
When I do this and turn my table right side up, I can see the legs of the table poking out of the top....did I do something wrong or is the program glitching?
Sir, im having difficulty on CTRL key and setting .75 scale on the table legs. i hold ctrl key and try to enter a value but nothing happens. what might be the problem here? thank you. i hope you can notice my message.
Just tap it, don’t hold it
@@Thesketchupessentials If i release the key, the function wont work. Maybe its because im using the old version of sketchup?
@@Thesketchupessentials I'm having the same issue. Works as depicted in the free version but in 2021 Pro I have to hold down CTRL which doesn't allow for typing the .75 scale. Thanks for your help. Excellent video.
Is it still possible to find a free version of Sketchup, or something equivalent?
Thank you for this! Super cool video! A+++ ( wait i didnt comment this)
:)
@@Thesketchupessentials i didnt comment that
OK, How do you get rid of the line between the two sections of the legs?
Use the erase tool and hold the shift key - this will hide them. They're still there, but you can't see them
Tapping the control (ctrl) key doesn't toggle or take me into "about center mode" when using the scale tool. Tapping control works for other tools like the rectangle, but for me, I have to hold the ctrl key to remain in about center. I also cannot type measurments while holding the control key.
The only solution I've found so far is to ctrl click an anchor point, then click again to release, then type my measurement and press enter.
how do you do that on 07:00, is it magic?
Minute 4:52…..how did u do that edge function?
Can one use the iPad version for this ?
Should be able to, yes - it'll just look a little different from a UI standpoint, but not that much
@@Thesketchupessentials thx so much
i like your video but at 3:50 you clicked something to create a square and did not say outloud your command. i cant find it. please help
was sowhere where I couldn't get my stuff. Now 3, I looked for help, watched video upon video after video and on and on. About a
please, upload Day 2 video soon.... May be the next day, right???
That's the goal - new videos in the series every weekday for 30 days!
@@Thesketchupessentials i hope dear sir you can upload next vide soon
For some reason... the select tool doesn't work the same for me. Neither when selecting the apron on top of the table, neither when selecting the table's leg.. but asides from this it really works just fine so far.
When i make the leg and duplicate it and move it it only shows 3 sides of the 4" leg?
Hard to tell, but it feels like you didn't include all of the faces in the leg component?
@@Thesketchupessentials how would I select the face against the apron? That is the missing face. I selected (which I think is right) like you did and only get 3 faces. I’ll try again. I watched you video for 2 hours.. I’m sure it’s something “simple” the only way I could get all 4 faces is if I built it alone outside of the apron and top
my apron and table top won't group separately
How you had taken that table up at last
I don't understand
Lost me at about 4:40, how do you offset?
My SketchUp doesn’t accept when I write 1.5 as 1 1/2’’…. What can I do?
Write 1.5?
Doesn’t work. Found out that I have to write 1,5;1,5 instead of 1.5,1.5… maybe it’s because my SketchUp is in French
anyone know how to fix it?
30 days for free? :O
Aha I'm already learning, albeit that means learning how to find information about learning Sketchup...
I love how you are just using hotkeys and not mentioning which ones in the first episode of a learn sketchup tutorial. This was a sludge fest to get through my lord.
I need to make a cube for a school project but I don't know how
TheSketchUpEssentials help me!!!!
lol I just realised that the space key is left of my command key
wait no its on the right
omg their are two command keys omg!!!!!
WHAT DO I DO!!!!
I really like your work but I forwarded this to a friend who has been keen to learn Sketchup. They know their way around a computer but never used SketchUp (i.e. a beginner) they got completely lost - you moved too quick (ok this can be solved by rewinding the video) but you missed describing what each tool was, how to do basic navigation between tool modes and selection. They were completely lost about half way through the apron when you were doing the guides and offsets. Can I suggest a ‘day zero’ or even some ‘day -1, day -2’ etc for genuine beginners? Combine this with with working in imperial units and unfortunately they won’t be subscribing.
So for me - as somebody who has used SketchUp a bit I’m finding this a valuable refresher/gap filler but for a ‘beginner’ I think it’s too big a step up.
Super valuable feedback - I really appreciate this! I'm going to try to add a day zero that teaches some of the basics and also references back to my original starter tutorials for SketchUp Free and Pro.
@@Thesketchupessentials great - thank-you for your quick reply! I suspect that most complete beginners would be using the free/web versions? So I suggest focusing on those editions for beginner lessons?
@@Thesketchupessentials So happy to hear you're going to possibly add a day zero. I am a brand new beginner with Sketchup very first time using it (free version) and although I was able to play with it and figure most everything out when I wasn't sure of your transitions, it would be helpful to have a baseline starting point. Thank you for this GREAT tutorial! I'm excited to move onto day 2 and get caught up!
I agree. To get through this video with a very dysfunctional table took me 2 hours, and I know my way around computers. Even the measurements and scaling is hard to figure out. If I use 'inches' I can't even see my table.
Hi sir I am Asif Rasheed from Pakistan. I don't know whether you reply to me or not but it is a wish may you teach us Interior and Exterior Architectural planning and drawing. if you make such a series I believe you will get Millions of fans and subscribers because no one can teach as you teach this software.
if u use a older version like me this tutorial is okay but not too good. for example, you never told us how to move the object up at the end. Also, you didnt say which button is offset so I had to look for it. I didnt even know it was called offsett

Why didn't you start with showing us how to create an axis? I've been stuck on day 1 for 4 days because obviously I can't practice the things in this video without first creating an axis. SMH
I don't understand - why are you trying to create an axis? I'm not sure what you mean in this context or why it would hold you back from following the instructions in the video.
So the thing is- when i open layout on my PC, it doesn't show the axis lines so I can start drawing rectangles and other stuffs. All I get is a blank paper and I don't know how to insert the axis.
Do you understand ?
@@ZookaTG This isn't a Layout tutorial. If you're in Layout you're using the wrong program. You need to be in SketchUp - either the desktop pro version or the online version. Layout doesn't really have axes in the way you're imagining
@@Thesketchupessentials ohh my bad. Thanks for the clarification. My PC won't open SketchUp pro because of my graphics card.
Going all a bit too fast for me
