I come back to Sketchup every now and then. Every time the same mistakes is made. Sticky geometry, forget to group and/or make component. Misaligning objects. Usually I get quite far with my model and then I start over doing it right the second time. I do love Sketchup because it is easy to use but you get punished hard for doing stupid mistakes. Love you videos. This one was right on the money.
I just started exploring this SketchUp thing... without any background of 3d designing and other drawing tools. your tutorial really helps... appreciate your time for doing this! Thanks!
Another good one. Your videos consistently find the right balance of detail and efficiency. Never excessive nor incomplete. And you devote the right amount of time to each one. Great for a "working" coffee break or (as now) on a Saturday morning when the part of my household that doesn't get up before 10:00am is still asleep. Been using SketchUp for a few months, and still didn't know about saving views. Worth a few minutes to get that tip!
Number 4 seems like the one I probably still do although I don't consider it a waste because there's always that thing especially in architectural representation where clients will ask for a virtual model or VR views or additional renders then the objects you put in your model become necessary. Good video!
Eyy Justin, you kind of saved my life during 2020, not to be overly dramatic, but seriously, man: THANKS ! I appreciate your "simplified" explanation of this SoftWare is quite inspiring. THANKS for that!
1. Not Grouping Geometry (0:56) 2. Clicking and Dragging (2:04) 3. Modeling Off-Axis (3:24) 4. Modeling things they don’t need (5:02) 5. Modeling both halves of symmetrical objects (6:07) 6. Not organizing their models (7:26) 7. Not saving camera views with scenes (8:29) 8. Not autosaving (9:23) 9. Improper Selection Tool Use (10:09) 10. Imprecise movement (11:11)
I'm a carpenter for Cabeen Originals. We make do all things Custom for commercial buildings, mainly wood products. Been watching for awhile, and really love it. I've just registered to support your patreon, thanks a bunch, keep it up.
THANK YOU! I've been trying to move a roof, and it just ended up sticking to the wall and all, now I know why! I need to group the geometry, THANK YOU!!!!
I'm coming back to say that I have now gained enough skills to make cabinets better using the offset tool. Before I manually drew each line & did not hit an arrow to lock it and I did approximate measurements instead of typing in specific ones. Now I will make the largest size rectangle & use offset to reduce for outlines of where doors start. Put a line down the middle. Offset again for individual door frames, etc. I was able to complete in just a few minutes something that took me hours before- and I have much more accurate ones that I saved as a group.
Justin, thank you for this tutorial. Out of the ten things you covered, I learned that I've been doing 2,3,5,9 & 10 wrong and driving myself NUTS!!! You have saved me hours of frustration. Thanks
Yea it annoys me how many people don't use group & components. So many of those trash youtube videos of "speed modelling" really set some REALLY BAD EXAMPLE to new users. Or when downloading stuff on 3DWarehouse, stuff are sticking together it's so annoying to fix or apply textures... [No.10 movement] - I will suggest use the [K] xray-lines trick. Often time you want to move something but stuff blocking your cursor you can't make reference, or just making a move that don't align to axis - Just press [K] key, now you can move the objects to whatever reference points or lines you may have precisely and very quickly. Tip: ALWAYS DRAW REFERENCES. No matter it's a simple line or use the tape & protractor tools. References allows moving complicated components around at pin-point accuracy. Here's one example: imgur.com/ACUhaOP
Oooh - that's a good one - I haven't even been doing that, but I can see how using the Xray lines for inferenceing could really help with moving objects around. Thanks!!!!!
I am seriously tempted to invest in the actual course. After 3 weeks of experimentation, I still didn't know (or had forgotten) quite a bit of these tips. Nicely presented.
#2 - I just learned yesterday after using SU for 5 years! Where was I when the video came out! #5 only sounds like a good idea - trust me - the moment you make it you will want to fix only one corner. Every time I get smart - I find out I wasn't.
Lots of videos mention groups for organizing stuff - great way to make an object that doesn't stick to surrounding geometry, can be moved around, copied etc without polluting model's "Components" storage. But this was actually the first time I saw outliner (although it wasn't even mentioned, if I'm not mistaken). I wish I knew about it earlier, because now I have a model with couple of hundreads of "flat groups", and many of them are called just "Group" :) Didn't know about left/right selection difference, too. Thanks!
I was going to "S-can" this whole app. Then I ran into your Video. Your explanations, directions, and tips are spot on for someone that thought to give it a look see. Thank you for taking the time to point out important Key Strokes and aspects that even Louis and Clark (Frodo Baggins, for you younger folks) would not have found.
When you import models from the warehouse or any where else, there is something I often forget, to remove the tags they come with so they do te mess with those in my model if you have it organized. (Tags are very useful, as groups and components naming are, to have your model well organized and easy to work with as it grows big)
10/10 😅 I'm trying to use sketch for a project now but I'm a beginner. I can't seem to put an opening on an exterior wall for my doors and windows. I'm not sure if the problem is that the wall and the windows/doors are not in the same plane. I'm usually seeing a magenta-colored axis, not RGB
Thanks for the vid. I am a newbie with SketchUp and love learning a new system. I love good info tutorials and would ask for any recommended ones that are current. I have tried several older one but they truly are way out of date, and much newer one are concentrated on getting clicks and subscriptions. This one sides solid. Thanks for the pointers.
Doing a garden design course and learning SketchUp from you. Have you done a video on how to create a basic garden and where to find the best plants from 3D warehouse? Loving your tutorials!
Hi there, I like your videos, they are a great source of knowledge for beginners and also for advanced users. So thanks for going to the trouble of making all of these videos. I also just want to throw in, that I do not like the scale tool for flipping objects, because it has shown over and over again that many users try to do a quick one and make scaling mistakes as a result. I do prefer, in order to make sure all stays accurate, to use the context command flip along red, green, or blue axis.
Thanks very much Olav - I think this one comes down to workflow preference - for me I have trouble picking the correct axis to flip along on the first try, so I use the scale tool. That said, if users have trouble scaling to the right value, they should probably use the flip along command instead. Thanks!
Awesome video. I am new to sketchup and it's been very frustrating at first learning the program but then it clicked and I finally understood how it worked. But so much yet to learn. I am not a custom cabinet builder but use custom build companys to make my cabinets. However is there a list of cabinet making company's I can download from there products and what they actually make into sketchup? I can design whatever I want in this program but it's pointless if my suppliers dont make my designed style.. Please help? ?Thanks
I learned how to use sketchup on my own, sure wished that I had seen these videos before designing 80 cabinets for our new home. Would of saved me days of work designing instead of being in the shop constructing cabinets. You do a great job explaining how to use program.
7(kinda) and 9. With 7, while I didn't know about this, I haven't had a project where I would really need it yet either. 9 is something I never realized and I would sometimes get frustrated where it would select what I want and sometimes not, now I understand how it works! I've just kinda been amateurishly dabbling in Sketchup for a year or two, so I have grasped many of the fundamentals, but am very far from proficient. Still, this video was helpful and interesting!
10 Mistakes 1. Not Grouping 2. Click and Drag 3. not inferencing axes 4. Adding unnecessary shit that won't show in final view 5. Not modeling symmetrical objects by part/component 6. Not organizing into separate tags/layers 7. Not saving scenes (for presentation) 8. Not using autosave 9. Improper usage of 2 selection tools 10. Imprecise movement of objects (not using inferencing and anchor points)
Great tips! When I’m drawing a line of moving an object, I have been holding down the arrow keys for inference. So all I need to do is tap once? I’ve had problems with this all along... inference doesn’t stay locked.
Correct - I don't think there are really any tools in SketchUp where you hold down keys on your keyboard. Single clicks and single taps usually are the way to go...
videos like this are grest! esp if u use other graphics programs ... and just need quick tips to readjust to instinctive or intuitive actions that vary from program to program. skech up is great for just that Sketch up... fast work .. and flexibility to export to more sophisticated or specialised software.

Probably too late now, but it would have been useful if you had referenced the version of SU that you're using. The software has changed many times over the years that unless a user is using the exact version you employ here it is impossible to follow your instructions. For example, in Nov. 2022 the free version does not look or function anything like whatever version you are using. Vendors arbitrarily modifying versions, adding or deleting functions, and deploying new graphic interfaces is a scourge.
I would put: not looking into plug-ins as the last point. I know architects that have been modelling with SU for years and never even tried a single plug-in. And thats exactly how they teached us in university. We all accepted vanilla SU as the given thing and so a lot of us had soooo much unnecessary work that could have been solved in seconds with random rotation, mirror copy, cut to plane or even just the Solid Inspector.
Totally agree - I can't figure out why more people don't want to learn to use extensions - there's not a lot of focus placed on extensions in a lot of tutorials and it seems silly to me
Quick question please: How do you match a corner where 3 radius meet? I have a product with 3 corners where 3 external faces meet and they have the same radius on the corners.
OMG you really make everything so easy! I have recommended you to my friend who is also studying interior design, and we love your work. Thank you sooooo much!
Hi Justin Thank you for the amazing tutorial .I have a question, how did you flip the table in order to create it symmetrical! i mean I managed to flip it but in different sizes !! thank you
I had a problem with the first one. I built an upper cabinet & when I tried to select it to make it all a group, I missed parts, included parts of the wall, etc. Any tips on how to make sure you get the whole thing without getting wall behind it? Sketchup freezes up/crashes whenever I use the Edit option in the menu (although I haven't tried right-clicking). I wish there was a keyboard shortcut to hide things. The arrow key to lock to axis points would have made my life so much easier when I was starting out. How do you make sure you're moving along a particular axis? Can you click an arrow on the keyboard to make it follow that axis?
thanks for the info. I am currently using sketchup free (web) and I have several times miss used some key (brushed my mouse pad) and found myself off somewhere and having lost my origin... at that point I try shrinking the model (rolling the mouse button) and sometimes I have found my way back. Is there a Back to origin key?
i use your videos more than any other. my probem is that my default tray is covering the whole workspace. can you tell me how to restore it to the side of screen. Thank you
Is there an option to be able to use a photo and use it on sketch up, I want to take a pic of the front of my house and play around with different textures, colours and cladding.
Thanks so much for these tutorials. I'm an interior designer returning to work after a ten year break (children), and want to brush up my Sketchup skills. Do you have a specific course for this?
Hi Helen - I actually just released a SketchUp course that provides start to finish SketchUp training. As a part of the course, I talk both about modeling for interior design, as well as modeling to create 2D plans from your models in Layout. You can check out more info at www.thesketchupessentials.com/course . Let me know if you have any questions!
Nice work bro...just found out about sketch and want to design a container home for my wife and I. Can you please do a tutorial.. stay to finish off a custom 5 or 6 container home... with windows.. doors ... roof... interior finishing. Perhaps 4 containers on bottom..2 on top... with upper deck? I wad trying to import TREBLD into sketchup from the instructions from TREBLD and it isn't working. Thanks so much
Thank you so much for clear explanations! Very useful, really. What about key's shortcuts? A such guide will be very useful! Anyway, you did great thing! Thanks a lot!
I don't think I've done a video about specific keyboard shortcuts quite yet. Usually I mention the shortcut in the videos about the different tools - thanks!
One crucial thing missing here is how to keep geometry seperate from each other even when you want to use existing geometry to build upon, which is a very common need. Eg. I make a square, then I make another square using the first one's side to get the same size. seems no matter what I do with grouping or layer selection the second square ends up sharing geometry with the first.
Because when you use existing geometry then you have lines that are 'doubled up' making it hard to distinguish which one goes in the group and which doesn't. It's always been a problem for me.
I am new to sketchup and what i have downloaded is sketchup make 2015. Before watching youre videos i have a lot of question but now some of it were answered. Thanks for your great videos. As other were saying youre a great teacher. I am planning to buy cnc machine for a hobby because ive seen some of its capabilities and they were great. But i notice that i needed design software, and cam software. What catches my attention with this sketchup is how easy to use. And it has a cam capability with its sketchucam plugin. I have installed sketchucam and shape bender succesfully and able to open it, but why is it that i can not open my bezier tool. Please help thank you. GOD BLESS.
How can I easily drag an object to be flush on an an existing object? For example I have a framed wall I want to be able to copy and paste to the opposite side of my floor but I can’t seem to easily line it up even by zooming in. Otherwise this video was great. First time user and definitely fixed some of my problems I have been making.
If you're trying to move something precisely you probably don't want to drag - you want to activate the move tool by single clicking, then moving your object, then clicking again to set your final point. I think I may have covered some of the basics in this video - ua-cam.com/video/JrzKBXlR_V0/v-deo.html - Let me know if it helps!
Select left to right vs right to left was a real eye opener!
I come back to Sketchup every now and then. Every time the same mistakes is made. Sticky geometry, forget to group and/or make component. Misaligning objects. rare to find tutorial that doesnt drag on. clean, precise, excellent examples. perfect speech [no "ahhs"] score - 10+

For People on MacOS looking for the preference feature. It's under the SketchUp button (Next to the Apple Button) and in the drop menu.
Who would go out of their way to dislike this video?? LOL! Bless your eternal patience, man.
The selection tool. I never knew it has two different functions 😂 thanks a lot!
Glad you liked it!
I think that might have originated in AutoCAD back in the early 90s. It is extremely helpful in busy workspaces.
10/10 😅

Can you make a video on how to create a wall cap that can sit on a wall or block for hardscaping projects? And also how to curve/bend that cap?
Just saved me hours of frustration! Thank you,
I learned how to use sketchup on my own, sure wished that I had seen these videos before designing 80 cabinets for our new home. Would of saved me days of work designing instead of being in the shop constructing cabinets. You do a great job explaining how to use program.

Thanks man, really great tips! Oh, the arrow keys, amazing!
10 Mistakes
1. Not Grouping
2. Click and Drag
3. not inferencing axes
4. Adding unnecessary shit that won't show in final view
5. Not modeling symmetrical objects by part/component
6. Not organizing into separate tags/layers
7. Not saving scenes (for presentation)
8. Not using autosave
9. Improper usage of 2 selection tools
10. Imprecise movement of objects (not using inferencing and anchor points)
Very good info! I literally just started a day ago and I was victim to all these! Thanks to you, I am no longer!! Keep up the good work!
Glad you found it helpful!

Thanks for watching!
this is very life changing. thank you so much, you are very much appreciated!
Huge thanks for these videos. I'm just using sketch up for fun but I've learned a lot from just 4 of your videos
OMG mistake number 9! I did not know this. You have saved me so much time and confusion!
Great video. Thank you. I am new to Sketchup and found myself making several of these mistakes.
Glad the video helped!
Love it! Simple and fast. And I didn't use Sketchup for last 13 years!
Glad it was helpful!
Very good and usefull tutorial for me as beginner in sketchup. Thanks

Great video ... after doing several models, it was time to view this video which addressed most of the productivity issues I originally missed.
Glad it helped! :)
for number 10 I usually use the tape measure tool to make reference lines so I can place an object on a specific point. kinda tricky but works for me.
The tape measure tool is a great way to place reference points - thanks for the comment!
The last tip was something I always struggle with. Thanks.
Just want to thank you man; Great instruction, as usual, I don;t like your instructions, I do Love them, really appreciate
That selecting from left-right, or right-left just broke my brain! Well played sir!
Awesome - glad it helped!

Really helpful tips! I learnt it hard way to use the grouping tool so as to save time and effort!!! Thanks a lot!
Quick helpful tips like these lets me know what I didn't know I needed to know.
Lol - that's the goal! :)
Quick question please: How do you match a corner where 3 radius meet?
I have a product with 3 corners where 3 external faces meet and they have the same radius on the corners.
good video keep it up bro!!!! please make a video on how to model a sunken open air theatre.
JUSTIN you're really great man. I learnt alot for your videos.
OMG you really make everything so easy! I have recommended you to my friend who is also studying interior design, and we love your work. Thank you sooooo much!
THE BEST TIP AND TRICK !
Great video but I hated watching it because you point out hours of frustration i put myself through. Thanks for taking the time. I am grateful
Lol - I had YEARS of doing all this stuff myself ;p
Yeah! 8/10! The only ones I didn't know were the veiw save and layer system!
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Justin Thank you for the amazing tutorial .I have a question, how did you flip the table in order to create it symmetrical! i mean I managed to flip it but in different sizes !! thank you
#6 - Do you have a good video on how to do the organizing? Especially with homes and interiors?
Try this series - ua-cam.com/video/J-KkARNXnOo/v-deo.html
very knowledgeable and well explained. thanks
Thanks for great content. Are these only for sketchup pro? I think some of them dont work for sketchup free
great tips and a huge help. Thank you justin

Thank you
Thank you really good.

video super bien explicado muchas gracias bro...
Gr8 this not only for beginners its helps people in all levels 👍👍👍👍👍
Glad you found it helpful!
Thanks so much
dont b so lazy ... work it out yourself. hes got better things 2 do.
Sir this is really helpful videos! Thank you🙏
@TheSketchUpEssentials do you have a coupon to use?
Thank you so much for clear explanations! Very useful, really. What about key's shortcuts? A such guide will be very useful! Anyway, you did great thing! Thanks a lot!
I don't think I've done a video about specific keyboard shortcuts quite yet. Usually I mention the shortcut in the videos about the different tools - thanks!
I hope I don't step on TheSketchUpEssentials channel's toes with this, but the Jake Day Williams channel has a video about shortcuts.
That was very informative.
Many thanks from Berlin Germany.
Love you Justin!

I guess I don't understand what you're getting at - grouping geometry - the very first tip - is what keeps the geometry from "sharing"
GOD BLESS.
No idea on the Bezier tool - you might want to check the SketchUcation forums and see if anyone else has had that issue...
Can you / have you done that example with a table with 4 components, so you only have to manipulate 1 corner? That would be awesome
I think I did something similar in my getting started in SketchUp course here - thesketchupessentials.teachable.com/p/sketchupintrocourse
