  • This lens does not get enough love and I don't understand why. For video shooters this lens is hard to beat! The 18-120 F4 is an extremely unique lens offering power zoom and great optical qualities. The weight of this lens is next to nothing so balancing on a gimbal is easy.

How did you remote trigger the zoom out? Opps answered at end. Does your remote allow you to change to rack focus

did you download the xf18-120 firmware 1.1? its independent of the camera firmware. I can pull slow powerzooms that are parfocal and no exposure stepping. but it has to be at a certain speed. Make sure intraframe noise reduction is turned off. but yeah at -4 zoom speed with the zoom button in and out there is no exposure stepping. if you do +4 you see it very briefly.

@@adnan_velic just an update from my original comment. The speed values I mentioned were wrong. But I did run some more tests just now. The speed values go from 1-8, you can set this in the button setup menu, there are 2 powerzoom lens options you should pick the second one. At f4 any speed has no exposure stepping. Last time i checked at f8 there was a little bit when zooming out but it was minor but I also had interframe noise reduction by accident so I need to retest that. The biggest downside of this lens and it's definitely a software issue is that there's an auto barrel distortion correction being applied in the 18-20mm range of the lens. So when you zoom fast from something like 35mm down to 18mm you'll see the distortion being applied a split second after reaching the end of the zoom. I hope they give us an option to turn this off soon.

Yup. Super-zooms are all about compromise, and super-zooms designed to delight videographers *and* photographers at a reasonable price point are gonna require even more compromises... After getting used to it, shooting it in a variety of circumstances for a variety of use cases, this has become a favorite of mine too and I appreciate Fuji's choices in making this lens. Shame it's gathered so little respect from the camera reviewers, but I suspect this will become a cult classic among some user niches.

MORE importantly: REMOTELY. W/O touching the cam, via app.
Or. via touch on the backscreen.
btw: Same on the 15-45. Which is the even more most underrated lens! Suffiently sharp for video. extremely light and 150 used. 1/4 of the 18-120PZ. Nothings beats it by performance/price.
    22mm wide zoom lens...

The only issue with this lens is that the exposure changes when zooming in and out. I loved the idea of having Power Zoom on my mirrorless camera when shooting motorsports, so it's a real bummer.

@@madfinntech I saw in a comment somewhere after I made this comment that the exposure stepping WAS fixed, but then the next update UNfixed it because the autofocusing was off or something. So I assume they're gonna fix the autofocus thing so that the exposure stepping will be fixed again. There are videos of the lens zooming without exposure stepping, so I think that comment I saw was one of the trustworthy ones.
