  • A stunning retrospective featuring a comprehensive and detailed study of this legendary band in the crucial years when Bon Scott was in the band and AC/DC rose from playing obscure clubs to conquering the world.
    Director: The Creative Picture Company
Stars: Geoff Barton, Malcolm Dome, Tank Montana, Bon Scott
The Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1973 by Scottish-born brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. Their music has been variously described as hard rock, blues rock, and heavy metal, but the band themselves call it simply "rock and roll".
AC/DC underwent several line-up changes before releasing their first album, 1975's High Voltage. Membership subsequently stabilized around the Young brothers, singer Bon Scott, drummer Phil Rudd, and bassist Mark Evans. Evans was fired from the band in 1977 and replaced by Cliff Williams, who has appeared on every AC/DC album since 1978's Powerage. In February 1980, about seven months after the release of their breakthrough album Highway to Hell, Scott died of acute alcohol poisoning after a night of heavy drinking. AC/DC had initially considered disbanding, but at Scott's family's request, the remaining members opted to continue the band, bringing in longtime Geordie vocalist Brian Johnson as Scott's replacement. Later that year, the band released their first album with Johnson, Back in Black, which was dedicated to Scott's memory. The album launched AC/DC to new heights of success and became one of the best-selling albums of all time.
    AC/DC Complete Discography:

No disrespect to Brian Johnson by no means, he took the band to great lengths... but in the end, he's no Bon Scott. Bon was very rare and authentic and true to the rock-n-roll fashion. No one could ever replace Bon, he was truly one of a kind.

I feel the same way too! Bon was the ultimate front man and an excellent songwriter. And my hats off to Brian, I couldn't imagine having to go into that situation and did, and still does an excellent job. I can't think of any other band that continued on with another singer the amazing way he did. He's very humbled too!

No disrespect to Brian, but I was hooked on Angus and Bon. I managed to buy a bootleg copy of "Let There Be Rock" i late '77 or early '88, and was immediately blown away. I had the good fortunate to see AC/DC live in 1979, about 6 months before Bon died. When "Back in Black" came out, I was totally let down by the vocals. Bon was irreplaceable, but a funny thing is if you listen to "I Can't Dance" by Phil Collins, he sounds very, very similar to Bon. Phil's no contest to being the kind of front man Bon was, but his vocals were very, very close. And I'm not even a Collins fan.

I say, Let There Be Rock is a thrash metal album before the genre was invented. The playing technics, sound and style of thrash were not yet developed, but the energy and rawness of LTBR in my opinion capture the same spirit, that Metallica did later with Kill Em All or Exodus with Bonded By Blood. AC/DC had the same intension with LTBR and they did it in the most perfect style possible in 1977. Yes: I consider it closer to thrash than Judas Priests "Exciter", that appeared in 1978, just because LTBR has so much more punch, power and outraging rawness

Two things I wish the band would’ve done with Powerage, at least for the American market. First release “Cold hearted man which was held for Australia release only and two Added Bon’s cut of “What do you do for money honey, which was worked on but ultimately dropped from the sessions. Again worked on For Highway to hell as well but dropped again. Brian did a great job with it for Back in Black but Bon wrote it and his version would’ve just killed. @@Gratefulman1965 Great opinion, Jeff!
I am german and I don't really know the US version of Powerage. But for me the album is absolutely perfect as it has been done, by Vanda and Young. I know there are rumours of lyrics Bon also wrote, but this is kinda legendary, and perhaps we will never find out the truth. With Mutt Lange as next producer AC/DC made their biggest mistake for me. The raw and rough sound of their earlier work I loved so much, was then sadly lost (came back a little with Flick of the Switch). Of course they were doing great albums later on, with Lange, but this was for the world's taste, but not for mine. Nothing against Brian Johnson, he was the best man they could ever get, but AC/DC's real spirit died with Bon.

There'll be a massive concert for their last ever show but I doubt it will be here in Sydney but we can only hope us locals... This is where it began and Mr n Mrs young are still here so let's all look forward to the last chapter to this icon of rock and always bang your head n tap for ACDC 👍

I saw them in wheeling WV 3 times. Once in 1977 at theatre that i had just started working in in 1976. UFO with Shenker and The Motors. what a show that was. I was wide eyed young guitar player working as a stagehand more so just to be there than the money. I talked to Angus. He was my age. He wanted to play his guitar in the balcony behind the statues over the box seat on the floor. lol they had wireless guitars then, Not great but they worked. Shenker was even wire less. I walked into the storage room under the stage and Shenker's Black and White V was just laying there. I wanted to touch it so bad. I was scared of getting caught because the amps were set up and they had already sound checked. I was scared some one would hear it. UFO's manager kept me happy all damn day from the time i met him early in the morning. He said you look like you had a rough night. I said we had some beers last night. He said come with me. lol cocaine all day and all night. After the show he asked me to go the dressing room and get Michael's guitars. I walked in that room it was thick with has smoke and smell. I was stoned the rest of the load out. I got the guitars. I brought them upstairs. Michael was in there with 2 beautiful women. I was like so this is what it is to be a rock star. It highly influenced me to to play harder and longer. I'll never forget that day. My personal thoughts being of this age and there even so slightly through all of this and looking back, They broke a barrier of getting their music played on radio in USA and most hard rock bands did not get that kind of radio time back then. It was a time when power was moving from the dj's hands to the record companies hands. DJ's had all the power before the 70's. they played what they wanted to. Now it's controlled buy the corporate machine. It was very fun and interesting to grow from a boy to man during these years. It was such a social change of power. I wouldn't change a damn thing if I could do it again. As matter fact I would love to do it again and who the hell wouldn't?

I had just received Highway To Hell for Christmas that year. I was 15, and absolutely broken hearted when Bonn passed. Shortly after, we heard Dirty Deeds for the first time here in America.
My heart almost jumped out of my chest!
Had I misheard the reports? Was Bonn actually still alive? What a cruel trick, I thought at the time.
It took years for me to finally accept Brian. Side note here.. I disagree with these guys that Powerage was a so-so album.
In my opinion it was absolutely their best. I still spin it regularly. Peace!

Shout out to "The Stream" for posting this excellent (although very British) take on the band. It's a pity there wasn't more presented on the bands rise in Australia. I was fortunate enough to see the band play at Festival Hall when they were pushing the newly released Dirty Deeds record down here, just prior to setting up in Britain then conquering the world. It was a musical blessing.
    Re: Powerage
"Although, the album didn’t chart and got in the middle between two of the band’s breakthrough, Let There Be Rock and Highway To Hell, over the years, the likes of Keith Richards, Eddie Van Halen, Joe Perry and Slash named it as their favorite AC/DC record".

And then I discovered Bon Scott so I’ll say like I heard some journalist ones say “I loved AC/DC before they were shit” And there’s no way you could’ve come up with back in black within the same year with lyrics to sound just like bond so anyway, this is no diss on the band. Up To My Neck In Yòu, Kicked In The Teeth and Riff Raff are great deep cuts on Powerage. Bon is a masterclass lyricist. His signature use of the double entendre and cleverly phrased sexual innuendo was and remains the pinnacle example for High Voltage Rock N Roll. Brian Johnson pales in comparison lyrically, but I will say Flick Of The Switch is an underrated Johnson ģem.

Half the panel reminds me of ol' Metal Forces before 1991's big flick of the wrist into G-Metal. I guess Ac\Dc's golden years with Ronnie Scott are sheer adventure; i only got to know of them in 77 on a German mag, in a peripheral Euro country, where they only started being played on national FM around late 78 and very sparsely . Naturally, when If you want blood and HWTH came out, finally on a Portuguese pressing, their popularity rate here broke in like a massive dam collapsing, that voice and guitars and thudding drums almost omnipresent where teens gathered, 43 years ago...

I'm at about the 56:00 mark and they're talking about the live performances. I lived in Nashville and my first time to see them was the tour for Flick of the Switch (oops, For Those About To Rock), both, underrated albums. But as used to listening to their albums as I was, sometimes all day long; I was blown away at being totally wiped out well before the concert was over. They just kept playing, loud, driving and it just didn't let up. And even though it was one or two albums later, it still started off with Hells Bells. That wasn't my first concert, but it was my first AC/DC concert.

Let there be rock and Powerage deffo were the absolute epitome of AC/DC. Bon was at the absolute peak of his writing, Malcoms riffs were already epic yet still very much down to earth and grounded in traditional R'n'R and blues and Angus was just spewing out the most soulful bluesrock solos imaginable one after another. Being a guitarist myself some of these solos literally make me cry (of joy and involvement). Both albums are by far the most raw and energetic sounding AC/DC albums; Vanda and Young really perfected their sound and put the band were they belonged soundwise. IMHO none of the later producers captured what this band has always been about. Not Lange, not Fraser ... none. As much as I love Highway to Hell, Back in Black and some of the later stuff as well, I always thought that they sound too polished, taking away much of what the bands will give you live. HtH, BiB and FTATR really turned the band into an arena act - which tbh - I think they just aren't. Despite all the succes it had, that is. And after that, well, some of the albums either just sound catastrophic (Fly on the wall and Flick of the Switch) and after that it all became a bit too uninspired for much of the time (with occasional exceptions such as Thunderstruck obviously ...) I really don't touch these albums much nowadays whereas anything from High Voltage (AUS) to Powerage finds its way onto my turntable each and every week.
(Fun fact: My probably favourite AC/DC song (if such a thing can exist at all) is in fact from HTH. It's "If you want blood.")
