- When it came time to decide how to celebrate the anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike, nothing could compare to bringing back the Big Boy No. 4014. More than five years after the project began, the Big Boy was christened in Cheyenne, WY, May 4, 2019.
Thank you Union pacific for bringing back this awesome peace of railroad history cant wait to see it for my self one day!!
Roundhouse Warrior in a few days I will be next to the two brothers..4004 and 4014 and how much that means more to me... as 4004 was our own play ground set in the 60's of Cheyenne Wyoming...kinda like it is Family member out of place..
You can see alot more of our own family members who are not forgotten about.. and my late Brother In Law William Bill Riley Sr operated 43 years UPRR Locomotive Engineer Safety Awards sit in the Gold Spike Museum in Bailey Yard!
All Aboard!
Just saw it... IT'S AWESOME!!
Ummmm......its a boy not a girl
@@shorelinerailproductions OMG YEAH LOL XD
IM A BOY D:
I drove from NJ to St. Louis to see this for a minute and it was worth every second driving
Thank you, Union Pacific, for bringing back one of the most iconic steam locomotives ever. Welcome back UP 4014.
UberLukario Thank you
This gives you hope for the Human race. This is the kind of stuff Humans and corporations should be spending their money on. And it wasn't long ago that a CEO of a company would have refused to pay for this. But you can see that times have changed, and we are getting better as a species. Bringing back beautiful art like this. The next thing they are going to do is fully rebuild the "Penn Station" in New York after it was demolished in 1968 to build Madison Square Garden on top of it.
One problem with that, though: would the sport lovers of NYC (especially Rangers and Knicks fans) agree to demolish MSG in favor of a railroad station? Their replies would like "Oh no, not in our lifetimes, pal!"
Well done Yanks, just bloody well done. UP and all the team should stand proud both of their work and the service they have done for your country. Take a bow. I send you greetings and salutations from this side of the pond in UK
I guess UP was inspired by you guys, as you all brought back the legendary Flying Scotsman. Both locomotives are impressive in their own right, and feats of engineering that stand the test of time. I guess that means I should return the favor and congratulate you Brits for doing the same with the Flying Scottsman
Us Americans don’t have the same sense of preservation as you Brits do, you guys actually go full Jurassic Park, and are bringing back completely extinct locomotives from the drivers up! (The Best examples are Tornado, and the Prince of Wales)
@@digitalrailroader That is due to the young age of our culture. In a few hundred years, hopefully more of our history will be preserved. Rail is a key figure in the origin of our identity to due to the young age of our culture, and will be far more important in the future. All the hard work people are doing rebuilding steam today, will be priceless assets in the future to show our history.
Oh I disagree look at Musem ships the only major ship the UK has left from WWII is Belfast wereas the U.S has a lot more. It's just the U.S has more money and is tends to focus on bigger ticket items.
digitalrailroader you say that but i’ve heard there is a plan to build a brand new pennsylvania railroad T1 and to use it to attempt to break the record set by the A4 class Mallard
The Union Pacific has never changed its name - it has been the Union Pacific since its inception. Union Pacific knows it helped to build a nation, and that today, it helps sustain it. Unlike some other railroads, Union Pacific has never forgotten or ignored its own history. UP embraces community, railfans, and friends - rather than repulse or push them away. UP is friendliness, class, power, glory, and strength. UP is America.
Thank you Union Pacific!
The Union Pacific of today is not the same corporate identity as it was years ago. When Southern Pacific purchased the UP, SP took the UP name. Likewise when DRGW purchased the new UP it also took the UP name. In other words, the old UP from years ago was merged away several times and only the Union Pacific name has survived.
@@dsmith9964 Southern Pacific absolutely did not purchase the UP.
@@robertromaine6225 I stand corrected...somewhat. ..thank you! DRGW purchased SP in 1988 but renamed itself to SP. When UP purchased SP (former DRGW) it folded UP into SP Transportation and then renamed itself UP. So the current UP Transportation is actually the former Rio Grande Industries....sort of.
I thought that I had missed the Golden Age of Steam. To see a Big Boy fully restored reassures me that it’s a damn great time to be alive. Thank you, Union Pacific, for never giving up on the people of the United States of America
A testament to the skill of AMERICAN tradesman and a company willing to invest in those employees. WELL DONE Union Pacific!
Thank you Union Pacific for bringing back the legend the big boy
I plan on bringing my family (all 5 of us), from Australia to see and ride on a rolling piece of history.
I don't know what to say. She's glorious. Salute to Ed Dickens, the entire UP steam team, and Union Pacific, the greatest railroad ever. AWESOME!!
Thanks you Union Pacific for being the greatest and most influential railroad in the US, great job guys
Thank you Union Pacific. I can't express how much respect I have for the steam crew. Congratulations!
Brian Hebert thx for respecting my crew
So happy it’s restored! Well done UP!
Ricky’s Train Videos thx
Thank you Union Pacific for bringing back this historical locomotive back to life. People in all ages gathered from far and near to watch this historical moment to see a Big Boy running on it's own power for the first time in almost 60 years! Union Pacific never forget that the Big Boy helped build America after World War 2, and that's why Union Pacific should stand proud for their motto - Building America!
Return of a giant and a piece of American history. Thank you Union Pacific.
She's DONE!!!!! How awesome!!! Thank you to Union Pacific for taking on this enormous task, and bringing a piece of American History back to life. Can't wait to ride her!
It's a him It's a boy big boy
Outstanding work!
Congratulations Union Pacific! You did good bringing the Big Boy back from the dustbin of history. This behemoth's resurrection and return to the rails befits our nation's grand sesquicentennial celebration in Utah to commemorate the Golden Spike ceremony that marked America's first transcontinental railroad. Thanks for sharing the Big Boy with all of America in this celebration.
-from Tom Pilling
y is there so much trainz here
Thank you! Bringing this back brings back a tangible piece of history to our family. My grandfather worked as a fireman on these locomotives going from Ogden, UT to Green River, WY. He died before I was born and there is little left that we have from him. This is something special to us, his descendants. We’re very appreciative of the decision and work that went into restoring this beast.
Thank you guys, seriously, thank you for rebuilding a huge part of American History.
Thank you Union Pacific for restoring the mighty locomotive. Thank you.
UnionPacific4014 & 844 :0
Thank you Chairman Fritz and everyone at Union Pacific responsible for this remarkable achievement. I can't think of any company more invested in its corporate history and its storied place in the fabric of a nation. Bravo, and happy 150th anniversary.
2:19 Steam engines and Wind Turbines. Truly the Alpha and Omega of energy.
Southern California native here. I gotta say, we were pretty sad to lose 4014 from Pomona, I had fond memories as a kid of being allowed to climb through the stokers hatch to marvel at the inside of the firebox, but knowing that the Big Boy lives in all its glory, steaming down the rails, is worth it.
Bless you Union Pacific. I'm sitting in Australia watching this with tears in my eyes. Welcome back 4014.
YOU DID IT Union Pacific you've done well for getting the job done...and I can't wait till Big Boy comes to California in person
Thank you, UP, for recognizing that you have an irreplaceable piece of history here, and for restoring it and sharing it with the world.
Thank you random team from France, for restoration on Big Boy 4014!
About 25 years ago, I heard a UP Public Relations spokesperson call the Challenger to Atomic Weapons of Public Relations. UP, you now have the Hydrogen Bomb. Thank you for doing this UP; preserving your corporate heritage, and all our American heritage. Well Done.
Get hyped
Cool seing you here!
What an amazing locomotive and what a dedicated team to have brought it to life. Union Pacific, thank you so very much. This locomotive is one of many that sparked my interest in steam and it is so nice to see it back.
What words can begin to explain how America feels regarding the return of BIG BOY!
Everything GREAT to the Union Pacific and the Steam Crew.
Wow, absolute respect for everyone involved in bringing this grand locomotive back to life.
Thank you Union Pacific for making this possible!!!!
What a fantastic restoration! Well done to everyone involved throughout this project, the end result is superb. Sending you all best wishes from the UK!
Amazing - Thanks for investing in this, great corporate foresight
Congratulations and Thank You U.P. ! You’re a class act in the Class 1 world. The spirits of all the men who’ve worked and ran UP steam are smiling from above.
Now I have a reason to visit the U.S from Australia 😁 long live 4014
Thank Union Pacific for taking the initiative to start this amazing project. Next I would like to thank every hand that was laid on hey everybody this Behemoth piece of metal, bringing it back to the fully operational unit we can see today. Thanks to all of you, and thank you for not letting steam die. I was born about the time that steam died out, and it's good to see this being revived! Good work everybody! And again, congratulations
You brought the big boy back, and i'm damn sure he'll be hauling cargo across the lines once again.
You have done an incredible job on that absolute giant of a locomotive :) It's truly awesome to see something like this back on the rails again! It's absolutely breathtaking!
Welcome back the monarch of the railway!
Thank you to all the people at Union Pacific!! It is so great to see living history preserved for the young and the young at heart. GREAT JOB!!!
Looking back this is one of the most important pieces of American history even though it’s in the modern generation. We will never forget this. Welcome back big boy
Who else watched the event through VRF (Virtual Railfan)? I was on a call with all my friends geeking out because of this. Thank you for reviving the giant.
I skipped part of my car show that day just to watch the live stream. .
I've waited for this moment for a *VERY* long time. Thank you to all the men and women who put their heart and soul into making this beast of a machine rule the rails once more.
A system wide tour? I better start making my way to LA to catch a glimpse of it this summer!
A run to Kansas City or Texas might be in the works too, since they're now on some UP trackage!
Hopefully they still care about their Vegas system, I'd to love it in person myself.
Crawled all over it when it was @TheFairplex and I'm happy EVERYONE gets to see BACK TO LIFE !
@@linkfan95: It's scheduled to be in Vegas from October 6th through the 8th.. .
did u make it?
childhood dream... realized! Amazing work guys!
Than you UP! 4014 is a BIG piece of Americana at its finest!
I wanted to witness this in person when I was 10 years old. I’m now 15 but I never got to, but this is still amazing.
"We're a million miles of history a-shining in the sun, we're the Union Pacific and our big boy story's had just begun!"
Thanks Union Pacific for providing the means to restore this wonderful locomotive to working condition and the Company and all your staff can be very proud of this achievement that all Americans who see 4014, and 844, can share. Good luck, travel safe and God Bless you all.
I cannot say anything that has not already been said, but I must say Thank You! :)
I saw it today and it was absolutely INCREDIBLE!!!
I've been waiting for this moment to happen
A living breathing piece of history. Preserving this for future generations is just too cool. Because with instant everything these days. A steam locomotive literally helped build our country. It was the main mode of travel before airplanes and trucks on highways. The Big Boy. A living breathing dinosaur. Once it breaks in it should literally shake the ground. I don't live close enough to visit. But hope to maybe one day. Big Boy was so huge during the War effort during WW2. It's amazing how much pulling power one 4000 has. Best of luck with Big Boy. Awesome.
This is awesome! Great job guys!
Awesome! Never thought I would see one back on the rails. Fantastic! Well done and Congratulations.
Amazing work union pacific🎉
Please come to Seattle!!!
Bloody Done!, Good job UP you rock for bringing back this history machine, Welcome Back Big B
OK If you ran a railroad and loved what you did it would show, this is Union Pacific Railroad. Big Boy is the right name for this engine and for this railroad, Union Pacific ,you are the Big Boy . Congradulations to UP and to America.
This beautiful machine is such a magnificent example of human ingenuity.
I never had a thought that this would ever happen, not only getting one in running condition but fully restoring one is absolutely amazing! Thank you to Union Pacific.
Jim M Me Neither I found out from my grandma and mother They told me that it would be in Butler on Thursday, July 25, 2019
But I thought it would never run again because that’s what people were told for decades it’s too big it’s too heavy it burned too much fuel there was too much smoke coming out of it we had to remove too much ash from it well at least tons of ash from it and I mean tons of ash or they thought it wouldn’t work successfully on the oil that they are burning.
Me nether
One of the Big Boys, Beautiful locomotive!
I can't hit the like button enough. It's a shame that I'm in CSX Territory with no connection to freight or passenger service, just grain and fertilizer, Indiana for you. Long live UP Big Boy 4014!
Awesom! Just awesome! I am so thrilled to see that iconic engine back on the rails! My hat is off to the Union Pacific, and all those who worked to bring this marvelous machine back to life.
Well done!
I am also proud to say that my father worked for UP right up to his retirement. So I feel a special connection to Uncle Pete.
Yes, thank you UP for your dedication to history and preservation of living steam. But don't forget those who cared for her during her long slumber, making 4014 the perfect candidate to for restoration. The Southern California Chapter of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society did an amazing job over the many decades she was on display of upkeep. She was the centerpiece of their collection, and parting with her was not an easy decision. They even billed themselves as "Home of the Big Boy". Please take time to mention them when you talk about the restoration. While you did the heavy lifting, they helped make it happen too.
I had totally forgotten they were restoring it to running condition, and now suddenly it's steaming again! Amazing!
Well done folks, well done! Congrats to the UP Steam Shop for achieving this monumental goal.
So awesome
Umm, really happy to see this magnificent machine alive and well, but a few words from Ed would have been good don’t you think?
thats coming soon.
UP - be proud of your accomplishments. And special thanks to Ed and his team!
Ron Troy I think Steve Lee would be very proud.
@@connorflaherty175 Agreed.
Thank You UP for bringing it back. Matt C.
Thanks 1 million for running these machines
Union pacific I love you guys and so so so happy to see a big boy run before
Brings a tear to my eye. I feel a weird connection with this machine, its power has always fascinated me since I was a child. Thank you Union Pacific, greetings from Italy.
@HerrXenon - You want more tears in your eyes, listen to "Roll On Big Boy" by Nebraska 66 on UA-cam. A fantastic tribute to this great piece of history!
Sometimes even the most serious of railroad executives has to go out and engage in the sheer delight of playing with the trains. What a delight!
Ever since I saw the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 in photos I started to love the engine oh, so I started researching and that's when I really started loving the Big Boys especially 4014. Not only because 4014 sort of matches with my birthday date April 14th does the big boy was just one of the best steam locomotives I've ever seen. And once I heard and saw that it was going into restoration I was very excited because the big boy is coming back to life. And now I can't wait until the day I ride on the Excursion train and it is being pulled by the Big Boy 4014 himself or better yet right inside the cab. In other words, I'm giving you a big thank-you Union Pacific. I will always appreciate your efforts of restoring locomotives!!!!!!!😄😄😀😀😀😃😃😃
An astonishing machine with a restoration story to match.
Bless up and keep up the good work with your astounding steam program👌👊🙌
And that's why your number 1 in the world. No one bigger! Go big train! GO U.P.!
DAMN, that is a gorgeous piece of workmanship. I cant wait until it comes through Jefferson City, MO.
Steam engines are a piece of beautiful mechanical engineering and all that can be rescued, restored need to be. Thanks you Union Pacific for all the history brought back for all too see.
The golden age of railroading bought to life
I’m so sad I will never see this beast in real life because I live all the way over in Australia but I thank you so much for bringing this giant, gargantuan piece of absolute amazing material back on the railway to transport passengers, freight and memories.
I’m hoping this engine doesn’t break down for about at least two decades to give me enough time to move out because I’m 11 right now and want go to America to view this gargantuan beast for myself
tears of joy as i see the old girl back on the rails
It's a big boy so not a girl but I agree
@@BlakesTrainsandMore4014 Locomotives are generally referred to as feminine. And I mean in today's day and age having a transgender locomotive is rather progressive, don't you think? We only call Big Boys a he because of the name, if they were called Wasatch we'd refer to them as female. But we all know what we're referring to, so who cares. (please don't hate me)
I wish I could go to america to see this fantastic engine running.
What a great company Union Pacific. To restore this wonderful icon of American history shows you care about your history and your countries heritage. People from around the world are very grateful to Union Pacific, long may you prosper. Thank you from the UK.
Great job UP, thank you. Big Boy looks better than ever
What a beautiful sight seeing a double header between the 4014 and the 844
Amazing job! Keep him running guys!
Thank you Union Pacific for bringing the big boy back to life once again and thank the lord for making it possible
I love Big Boy soooo much!! 😍
Took my grandson to see Big Boy go through Claremore OK. Very impressive.
UNION PACIFIC rocks. *****

2:47 this year and years to come!😇
I cant beleve my eyes. I never though I would live to see a big boy run
Honestly never thought I'd see the day a Big Boy would return to steam, conisering the huge costs involved. Well done to all. Can't wait to come to the states and see it run.
Love from Spain 🇪🇸 Total Respect for what you did here.. just ‘awesome’.... USA has its issues.. glad to see honoring your past hasn’t fallen foul of the beancounters.. this at least, is a ‘pure’ act & i love you for it.
Oh I'm sure Big Boy will be pulling some huge freight trains as that is what it was designed and built to do initially. Of course that isn't a problem - that makes it a piece of LIVING history much like the Flying Scotsman which is flying down the high speed lines in the UK.
It's not bean counters who keep us from honoring our history.
