The fellow playing the kit is the perfect musician for testing drums and mic techniques. Super consistence and solid in his playing. Allows us to hear how things sound without a lot of annoying flash and overdynamic playing that doesnt translate well in the rock/metal world. Well done and thanks for sharing
I love that Hal started his groove with the obligatory and ever-loved ”PAT-BOONE-DEBBIE-BOONE” drum fill. That was NICE-Tastic !!!! Great Video, as always !!! Thanks
I've been using ribbons on overheads for years. I got a pair of Avantone cr-14's and since then I can't imagine using anything else. Even for aggressive metal drummers, they take so much level and "bashy" drummers end up sounding far more musical using the ribbons.
Thanks Hally! I appreciate it. The stands in this video are the big On-Stage stands. I've actually had them for 15 years! I also have big Atlas stands too.
For ribbons on kit...MS fok rules...sorry ;-) creates brilliant soundstage, no phase issues. Favourite is r88 but can do great job with thomann cheapies too (as long as you load them with 500k input) Edit: fok = front of kit ie approx 2m out in front of bass drum, 1.8m up with 45 deg angle pointing at drum seat: can almost use image as drum pan for close mics.
Never thought of this before but the top end roll off your get with ribbon mics must lend itself well to small rooms where recording drums in a small space with badly treated ceiling reflections is a problem. Do you agree?
The figure 8 pattern might be an issue in a smaller space like that. Remember that a ribbon mic is seeing in front AND behind. I think you would be better off with a more direction mic in that situation to help mitigate any problematic reflections from a close, and poorly treated, ceiling.
@@Ultimatestudiosinc yeah good call I didn’t even think about that figure 8. I use lewitt small diaphragm condensers right now and they sound great but am looking to get some less harsh/ more beefy overhead mics for my small room
I have a soundcraft signature 16 mixer and I'm looking to get some mics for drums set up then full band eventually.I'm looking into (mxl r144) x2 for overheads, sm57 for snare, and electrovoice PL33 for kick.Do I need a preamp for the overheads to avoid phantom power issues?
Hey Jonathan! They are equidistant from the kick and snare. My spaced pair overheads are a little different then the norm. I split the kit like an X and not the typical left/right or cymbal mics. Keeping them equidistant from both the kick and snare insures a strong center for both.
PLEASE HELP ME DECIDE! R40 vs R144 as overheads. They're both on sale for $99 each. I love the sound of ribbons... and my budget is only $200. (So it's down to one of these 2 mics.)
Hey Walter! I like the AT4081. It's a nice sounding ribbon mic. I wouldn't say it sounds super ribbony (that is now a word!) but it sounds great. Nice smooth top end. I use it a lot on guitar and as a drum room mic. I haven't used the Royer R10 yet....need to get my hands on one.
Hey Charlie, Love your channel! Do you also prefer the AT4080 & AT4047 for overheads instead of the coles 4038? Is there any other favorites that you use in edition to the Audio Technica's for overheads?
Hey to the drummer I think you keep calling him Holmes? Anyway when he tells you to go to the ride or toms or whatever you don't have to do a bar then a big fill just go to it lol. Like the videos. Cheers

I was just thinking this. It's pretty chill to listen to that dude play drums
Thats one of the reasons I love the recording vids on this channel.
1:51 thought you were about to bust a rap. Your speech was so in the pocket. lol
cool
You speak in drum rolls. Good stuff Charlie.
ahahah sounded like Eminem!
Fantastic drum sound! I've been an audio engineer for 32 years. I came across this video because I'm checking out ribbon mics. Great work m

Great Video, as always !!! Thanks
This kids playing is getting better and better every video! Marked improvement!!! Kudos my brother! Keep shedding! You’re sounding great!
Love the sound you got on on those drums.
Thank you!
This is the one of the smoothest pocket drummers I've ever heard
The Audio-Technica AT480 is in incredible mic on any source!
Agreed!!!
Great examples! And beautifully sounding kit! :)

Exactly what I needed to hear :)
The studio I'm currently interning at uses ribbons as overheads almost exclusively. Usually the coles/stc 4038s or the beyer m500s.
Sounded great on my phone!
Great sounds as always charlie!
Hi, thanks for the demonstration! OH location is a bit weird, the whole kit seems to sound panned right, when you listen in the headphones
Thanks for this video and all your other great content, can I ask what brand overhead mic stands you are using? Regards

0:23 Ouchh!! R.I.P

Doesn't Daniel Bergstrand use ribbons for his drum sounds?
Hey Paco!
That's a good question. I'll have to look into that a bit.

Are your overheads equidistant from each other? Its hard to tell from that angle.

Ah i see, Nice!
Well, son... two objects are always equidistant from each other. It's right there in the laws of physics.
Can you please tell me where you picked up your blue wall sound proofing panels?

It sounds great.
