I *plowed* the vinyl version of this in college (when it was new) and I've never stopped listening. She's my all time favorite songwriter. During COVID she played a free set on Facebook from her apartment, to benefit first responders, and I played and sang along. I think I can do about 20 of her songs.
Suzanne Vega is one of my favourite artists. Anything from her seven first albums is worth listening to in my opinion. I admit I'm not a big fan of her later output after 2008. Some of the songs I like best are "Straight Lines" (album Suzanne Vega), "Ironbound / Fancy Poultry" (Solitude Standing), "Room Off the Street" (Days of Open Hand), "Song of Sand" (that one is really minimalistic) (99.9 F°), "Harbor Song" (Nine Objects of Desire), "Penitent" (Songs in Red and Gray), "Zephyr & I" (Beauty & Crime). That's just a sampling. I saw Suzanne and Mike Viseglia duo perform in Helsinki, Finland and it was really, really great. And also about the dancing. Suzanne has talked about dancing and refers to dancing in some songs, at least in "Priscilla" (from Songs in Red and Gray).
During COVID I worked on her songs hoping to play them at open mic when things un-quarantined, and I absolutely did. Penitent was the one I concentrated on. I love all the ones you mention and many more. She's so very good.
A wonderful blast from the past. Her other biggest hits which you mentioned (Luka and Tom's Diner) should definitely be reviewed. Then some other songs like '99.9F°' or 'Blood Makes Noise', 'I Never Wear White' will give you examples of how diverse she can be.
The whole Solitude Standing album is a gem. Do review Luka. One personal fave on the album, besides Solitude Standing which you reviewed here, is the 2-cut combo "Ironbound / Fancy Poultry". I'd loooove to see your reaction to that song, and the pictures its lyrics portray.
Luka is her most famous and best in my opinion brilliant and clever lyrics Prince wrote to her thanking her for the best written song he had heard in a long time and how it leaves him feeling everytime he listens to it Masterpiece But toms diner dna version is excellent
A reference I still listening all this LP's. So underrated. The voice is not crazy but the lirycs and the music are nasty. Always a message. And best of all she makes all by herself. Still singing yet, try her discography u will have a surprize! 😊
Luka is her most popular song especially because it reached #3 on the Hot 100 Singles while it reached #1 Alternative charts. This is its follow-up. The Tom's Diner on this album is the Accapela version (original version). The most popular version of Tom's Diner is the remixed version done by DNA. Without permission from Vega, her record label, or publisher, DNA released the remix on a limited basis for distribution to clubs as "Oh Suzanne" by "DNA featuring Suzanne Vega". Vega's record company of the time, A&M, arranged to release the remix rather than take DNA to court for copyright infringement.
The Tom's Dinner is her only bad song, and weirdly also the most popular. She has lots of masterpieces, and nobody knows them. There is also an old recording of her from 84, just she and her guitar ( there is only a picture of casette, no video, just audio) Worth listening, she is just an unknown and underrated legend.

Not something extraordinary. Not terrible. Nothing memorable just a boring and forgettable song. I even pissed off for a few seconds while listening. It was so flat. NEXT! The best are Luka (1987) for example, I never understood why it has never been proposed since time! Really a shame! And "Tom's Dinner" with D.N.A in 1990, the best one.
Her voice is so beautiful, and unusual in its bell-like clarity - no vibrato, no wavering, bang-on every note. Poised is the word I'd use for her.

Just saw her in concert in France (Rennes) !

Best description I've heard of her singing is "civil". And I love it.

"Solitude stands by the doorway" is one of the greatest lines ever!
Caramel, Tom's Diner, and Luka are all classics. Blood Makes Noise and 99.9 are great too!
Love Suzanne Vega. Legend.

Luka is so poignant. It's probably her finest track and somewhat autobiographical.
