  • This is my non-technical review of the RF70-200mm f/2.8 USM. Rather than show you pictures of sharpness charts and pixel peeping on corners, this is a review of my professional work using the RF70-200mm f/2.8L USM. I have provided several image examples that show you the performance of this lens for studio and environmental portraits, street photography, photojournalism and even vacation shots. This review covers both full frame (R5) and crop sensor (R7) Canon mirrorless cameras. I even touch up on the video capabilities of the lens.
    Special thank to the Camera Exchange for sponsoring this episode! Buy your RF70-200 f/2.8 here!

    What do you think? Am I crazy for not owning a 70-200? Tell me in the comments below.

    • @JohnScarrott
      @JohnScarrott 2 роки тому

      Not crazy, as you say it's horses for courses and you have lenses that do what you want, so no point having a $3k lens sat on a shelf not being used much, if at all.

      I don't own one either! I use my Rf 85 1.2 for all my stuff unless I'm doing landscape THEN i use my Rf 15-35. I do want a telephoto lens but more for some wedding shots but mostly for wild life! Im close to Yellowstone so it would be nice to have a telephoto lens!

      @@alyssiasummers8660 the 85 1.2 spoils us, doesn't it? If it didn't exist at all I'd probably already own the 70-200, but I'm almost always going to reach for my 85 during a portrait session.
      I have an event on October 14 and I am going to wing it with my 85 and 135 on two different camera bodies. I need a backup body there anyway, might as well put it to use.
      Thanks for the watch!

    As a wedding photographer I stopped using the 70-200 ef as soon as I got the 135 2.0 ef and never looked back. But, now that I have a couple r6ii , a friend was selling the rf 70-200 for 1,800, I couldn't pass it up. I have been really enjoying it shooting my kids sporting events, really keeps me involved. Although I miss the faster aperture i'm pretty sure it has replaced my need or desire for a 135. Gonna start using the 70-200 at weddings next week. Great videos, Kevin! Thank You!

      You're welcome.
      The funny thing is that the new RF135 f/1.8 dropped and I love it so much I don't need the 70-200 for my work, despite the fact that it's an amazing lens.

      @@KevinDeal Im pretty sure if I had gotten the rf 135 first i wouldn't have felt the need for the 70-200. But, it works out because I've become really interested in hybrid shooting and i'm starting to market myself as a videographer as well so the 70-200 is very handy for various events/sports. So in a way the 70-200 is pushing me to find different things to shoot and giving me a new outlook on shooting.

    I used the EF 70 200 L v2 a lot. And I borrowed the RF 70 200 for a day. Wasn't impressed jet because of the bigger zoom throw. So bought the RF 85 1.2. Now after 6 months I still bought the RF 70 200 because the weight of the EF 70 200 on a RF body didn't make shooting fun anymore. To front heavy. The new RF 70 200 is so much lighter, this 500 gram lighter makes a big diferrence. and it looks just cool. I feel proud when I use it :) And the minimum focus distance is also very handy.

    Great vid, and I did love the Tamron G2 when I owned it,but it sat on the shelf more than it should have, when I sold it and bought the RF lens I did so purely for weight and size saving, but the IQ is so similar between them that the price of the RF is stupid money. As a rule I shoot primes and have 85, 135 and use those more than the 70-200 even now, but the 70-200 is my events lens and that zoom is convenient.

      @@KevinDeal my pleasure, I think you see it way too often on FB especially people bang on about getting native glass as it's sooooo much better, but it isn't, as you can see in the images I let you have, the yellow dress and the one with the feather mask both Tamron and no one would know if you asked what lens that was taken with. The cost did make me cough but selling the Tamron helped ease that dent in my wallet, plus getting it grey market here in the UK is a nice saving.

      @@chriswoodman_photography exactly. At the end of the day, I preferred the RF straight out of camera, but I know exactly what I would need to do with those Tamron files to replicate the same look. Would only take me a few seconds.

      It is a shame that the RF 70-200mm f2.8 is NOT compatible with a 1.4 teleconverter. It is not an internal focus lens as the lens barrel extends when zooming from 70-200mm. I used the EF version of this lens for 17 years in all kinds of inclement weather & never had an issue.
